1 Then his son Judas, who was called Maccabeus, took his place.	1 Seu filho Judas, cognominado Macabeu, ficou em seu lugar.
2 All his brothers and all who had joined his father supported him, and they carried on Israel's war joyfully.	2 Todos os seus irmãos o auxiliaram, bem como todos os que se tinham unido a seu pai, aceitando generosamente a promessa de combater por Israel.
3 He spread abroad the glory of his people, and put on his breastplate like a giant. He armed himself with weapons of war; he planned battles and protected the camp with his sword.	3 Dilatou a glória do povo; revestiu-se com a couraça como um gigante, cingiu-se com as armas de guerra, e empenhava-se nos combates, protegendo seu exército com sua espada.
4 In his actions he was like a lion, like a young lion roaring for prey.	4 Assemelhava-se nas ações a um leão, e parecia um leãozinho que ruge na caçada.
5 He pursued the wicked, hunting them out, and those who troubled his people he destroyed by fire.	5 Perseguia e rebuscava com cuidado os traidores e lançava ao fogo os que perseguiam seu povo.
6 The lawbreakers were cowed by fear of him, and all evildoers were dismayed. By his hand redemption was happily achieved,	6 Os maus recuavam diante dele transidos de medo, tremiam os que praticavam o mal e a salvação do povo firmava-se em suas mãos.
7 and he afflicted many kings; He made Jacob glad by his deeds, and his memory is blessed forever.	7 Seus feitos exasperavam os reis, mas alegravam Jacó, e sua memória permaneceu eternamente bendita.
8 He went about the cities of Judah destroying the impious there. He turned away wrath from Israel	8 Percorreu as cidades expulsando de Judá os ímpios, desviando assim de Israel a cólera divina.
9 and was renowned to the ends of the earth; he gathered together those who were perishing.	9 Seu nome foi pronunciado até as extremidades da terra, e ele conseguiu a adesão daqueles que estavam a ponto de perecer.
10 Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles, together with a large army from Samaria, to fight against Israel.	10 Aconteceu que Apolônio convocou os gentios e, de Samaria, partiu com um grande exército para pelejar contra Israel.
11 When Judas learned of it, he went out to meet him and defeated and killed him. Many fell wounded, and the rest fled.	11 Soube-o Judas, saiu-lhe ao encontro, venceu-o e o matou; muitos caíram aos seus golpes e os restantes puseram-se em fuga.
12 Their possessions were seized and the sword of Apollonius was taken by Judas, who fought with it the rest of his life.	12 Apoderou-se dos espólios, tomou a espada de Apolônio, e desde então usava-a sempre nos combates.
13 But Seron, commander of the Syrian army, heard that Judas had gathered many about him, an assembly of faithful men ready for war.	13 Seron, general do exército sírio, veio a saber que Judas cercara-se de soldados fiéis convocados e que ele os levara ao combate.
14 So he said, "I will make a name for myself and win glory in the kingdom by defeating Judas and his followers, who have despised the king's command."	14 Tornar-me-ei célebre, disse ele, e cobrir-me-ei de glória no reino, vencerei Judas com seus correligionários, que se opõem às ordens reais.
15 And again a large company of renegades advanced with him to help him take revenge on the Israelites.	15 Armou-se ele para a guerra. Um poderoso exército de ímpios marchou com ele, para reforçar e tomar vingança dos filhos de Israel.
16 When he reached the ascent of Beth-horon, Judas went out to meet him with a few men.	16 Avançaram até a muralha de Betoron e Judas, seguido de poucos homens, foi-lhe ao encontro.
17 But when they saw the army coming against them, they said to Judas: "How can we, few as we are, fight such a mighty host as this? Besides, we are weak today from fasting."	17 Mas à vista do exército que vinha contra eles, os companheiros de Judas disseram-lhe: Como poderemos enfrentar tamanho exército, se somos tão poucos, tanto mais que nos sentimos fracos, porque hoje nada temos comido?
18 But Judas said: "It is easy for many to be overcome by a few; in the sight of Heaven there is no difference between deliverance by many or by few;	18 É fácil, respondeu Judas, a um punhado de gente fazer-se respeitar por muitos; para o Deus do céu não há diferença entre a salvação de uma multidão e de um punhado de homens,
19 for victory in war does not depend upon the size of the army, but on strength that comes from Heaven.	19 porque a vitória no combate não depende do número, mas da força que desce do céu.
20 With great presumption and lawlessness they come against us to destroy us and our wives and children and to despoil us;	20 Esta gente vem contra nós, com insolência e orgulho, para nos aniquilar, juntamente com nossas mulheres e nossos filhos, e para nos despojar;
21 but we are fighting for our lives and our laws.	21 nós, porém, lutamos por nossas vidas e nossas leis.
22 He himself will crush them before us; so do not be afraid of them."	22 O próprio Deus os esmagará aos nossos olhos. Não os temais.
23 When he finished speaking, he rushed suddenly upon Seron and his army, who were crushed before him.	23 E logo que cessara de falar, arrojou-se Judas com rapidez sobre os inimigos, e Seron diante dele foi derrotado com seu exército;
24 He pursued Seron down the descent of Beth-horon into the plain. About eight hundred of their men fell, and the rest fled to the country of the Philistines.	24 e Judas o perseguiu na descida de Betoron até a planície. Morreram cerca de oitocentos sírios e os restantes fugiram para a terra dos filisteus.
25 Then Judas and his brothers began to be feared, and dread fell upon the Gentiles about them.	25 E foi assim que se espalhou o terror de Judas e dos seus irmãos e todos os povos das vizinhanças encheram-se de consternação.
26 His fame reached the king, and all the Gentiles talked about the battles of Judas.	26 Seu nome chegou aos ouvidos do rei, e todas as nações comentaram os feitos heróicos de Judas.
27 When Antiochus heard about these events, he was angry; so he ordered a muster of all the forces of his kingdom, a very strong army.	27 Quando o rei Antíoco soube dessas novas, encolerizou-se terrivelmente, reuniu todas as forças do reino, de que formou um exército poderosíssimo.
28 He opened his treasure chests, gave his soldiers a year's pay, and commanded them to be prepared for anything.	28 Abriu seu tesouro, e deu ao exército o soldo de um ano com a ordem de estarem prontos para qualquer eventualidade.
29 He then found that this exhausted the money in his treasury; moreover the income from the province was small, because of the dissension and distress he had brought upon the land by abolishing the laws which had been in effect from of old.	29 No entanto viu que lhe faltava dinheiro no tesouro e que os tributos do território eram deficientes em vista das perturbações e da maldade que havia provocado, suprimindo em toda a parte as instituições em vigor, desde outrora.
30 He feared that, as had happened more than once, he would not have enough for his expenses and for the gifts that he had previously given with a more liberal hand than the preceding kings.	30 Receou, portanto, não poder pagar as despesas, como fizera já uma ou duas vezes, e outorgar as liberalidades, que distribuía em certo tempo com mão generosa, porque excedia em liberalidade a todos os reis, seus predecessores.
31 Greatly perplexed, he decided to go to Persia and levy tribute on those provinces, and so raise a large sum of money.	31 Profundamente consternado, resolveu ir à Pérsia cobrar os tributos dessas regiões e ajuntar muito dinheiro.
32 He left Lysias, a nobleman of royal blood, in charge of the king's affairs from the Euphrates River to the frontier of Egypt,	32 Deixou Lísias, pessoa de relevo, de linhagem real, para dirigir os negócios do reino, do Eufrates às fronteiras do Egito,
33 and commissioned him to take care of his son Antiochus until his own return.	33 e ocupar-se, até sua volta, de seu filho Antíoco.
34 He entrusted to him half of the army, and the elephants, and gave him instructions concerning everything he wanted done. As for the inhabitants of Judea and Jerusalem,	34 Deixou-lhe a metade do exército do reino, com os elefantes, e deu-lhe as instruções referentes à execução de suas vontades, especialmente o que dizia respeito aos habitantes da Judéia e de Jerusalém:
35 Lysias was to send an army against them to crush and destroy the power of Israel and the remnant of Jerusalem and efface their memory from the land.	35 ele devia enviar um exército contra eles, para destruir e aniquilar o poderio de Israel e o que restava de Jerusalém, e apagar desses lugares até a sua lembrança
36 He was to settle foreigners in all their territory and distribute their land by lot.	36 e estabelecer em todos os seus confins estrangeiros, aos quais distribuiria por meio de sorte as terras.
37 The king took the remaining half of the army and set out from Antioch, his capital, in the year one hundred and forty-seven; he crossed the Euphrates River and advanced inland.	37 O rei tomou a outra metade do exército, partiu de Antioquia, capital de seu reino, pelo ano cento e quarenta e sete, passou o Eufrates e atravessou as terras superiores.
38 Lysias chose Ptolemy, son of Dorymenes, and Nicanor and Gorgias, capable men among the King's Friends,	38 Lísias escolheu Ptolomeu, filho de Dorímino, Nicanor e Górgias, valorosos generais e familiares do rei; 39. enviou com estes quarenta mil homens e sete mil cavaleiros para invadir e devastar o país de Judá, conforme a ordem do rei.
39 and with them he sent forty thousand men and seven thousand cavalry to invade the land of Judah and ravage it according to the king's orders.
40 Setting out with all their forces, they came and pitched their camp near Emmaus in the plain.	40 Postos a caminho com todas essas tropas, chegaram à planície de Emaús e penetraram nela.
41 When the merchants of the country heard of their fame, they came to the camp, bringing fetters and a large sum of silver and gold, to buy the Israelites as slaves. A force from Idumea and from Philistia joined with them.	41 Quando os mercadores ouviram falar deles, tomaram muita prata e ouro e se dirigiram com peias ao campo para comprar os filhos de Israel como escravos. Exércitos da Síria, bem como do estrangeiro, vieram juntar-se a eles.
42 Judas and his brothers saw that the situation had become critical now that armies were encamped within their territory; they knew of the orders which the king had given to destroy and utterly wipe out the people.	42 Judas e seus irmãos viram que a situação era grave e que as forças inimigas acampavam dentro de suas fronteiras. Sabendo também como o rei havia ordenado de tratar o povo para destruí-lo e exterminá-lo,
43 So they said to one another, "Let us restore our people from their ruined estate, and fight for our people and our sanctuary!"	43 disseram uns aos outros: Levantemos nossa pátria de seu abatimento e lutemos por nosso povo e nossa religião.
44 The assembly gathered together to prepare for battle and to pray and implore mercy and compassion.	44 Convocaram então toda a gente, a fim de se prepararem para a luta, de rezarem, de implorarem piedade e misericórdia de Deus.
45 Jerusalem was uninhabited, like a desert; not one of her children entered or came out. The sanctuary was trampled on, and foreigners were in the citadel; it was a habitation of Gentiles. Joy had disappeared from Jacob, and the flute and the harp were silent.	45 Porquanto Jerusalém estava desabitada e deserta: não havia um só de seus filhos que nela entrasse ou dela saísse. Seu santuário estava profanado, soldados estrangeiros ocupavam a cidadela, gentios faziam ali sua habitação. Toda a alegria havia desaparecido de Jacó; a flauta e a harpa estavam caladas.
46 Thus they assembled and went to Mizpah near Jerusalem, because there was formerly at Mizpah a place of prayer for Israel.	46 Os israelitas se ajuntaram, pois, e se dirigiram a Masfa, defronte de Jerusalém, porque tinham tido outrora, em Masfa, um lugar de oração.
47 That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their clothes.	47 Jejuaram aquele dia, vestiram-se com sacos, cobriram a cabeça com cinza e rasgaram suas vestes.
48 They unrolled the scroll of the law, to learn about the things for which the Gentiles consulted the images of their idols.	48 Abriram um dos livros da Lei, para ler nele o que os gentios perguntavam às representações de seus falsos deuses;
49 They brought with them the priestly vestments, the first fruits, and the tithes; and they brought forward the nazirites who had completed the time of their vows.	49 trouxeram os ornamentos sacerdotais, as primícias e os dízimos e mandaram vir os nazarenos que haviam cumprido o tempo de seu voto;
50 And they cried aloud to Heaven: "What shall we do with these men, and where shall we take them?	50 em seguida sua voz se elevou com força ao céu: Que havemos nós de fazer destas ofertas e para onde vamos nós levá-las?
51 For your sanctuary has been trampled on and profaned, and your priests are in mourning and humiliation.	51 Vosso santuário está profanado e manchado, vossos sacerdotes estão em luto e na humilhação,
52 Now the Gentiles are gathered together against us to destroy us. You know what they plot against us.	52 as nações se coligaram para nos aniquilar e vós sabeis o que elas tramam contra nós.
53 How shall we be able to resist them unless you help us?"	53 Como resistir diante deles, se vós não vierdes em nosso auxílio?
54 Then they blew the trumpets and cried out loudly.	54 Então eles soaram a trombeta e fizeram um grande clamor.
55 After this Judas appointed officers among the people, over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties, and over tens.	55 Depois disso Judas nomeou chefes para grupos de mil, cem, cinqüenta e dez homens,
56 He proclaimed that those who were building houses, or were just married, or were planting vineyards, and those who were afraid, could each return to his home, according to the law.	56 e disse aos que acabavam de construir uma casa, de tomar mulher, plantar uma vinha, ou que tinham medo, que voltassem cada qual para sua casa, conforme a lei.
57 Then the army moved off, and they camped to the south of Emmaus.	57 Os israelitas se puseram então a caminho e vieram acampar ao sul de Emaús.
58 Judas said: "Arm yourselves and be brave; in the morning be ready to fight these Gentiles who have assembled against us to destroy us and our sanctuary.	58 Preparai-vos, disse-lhes Judas, sede corajosos e estai prontos desde a manhã para o combate a essas nações que estão unidas para nos arruinar, a nós e tudo o que possuímos de sagrado;
59 It is better for us to die in battle than to witness the ruin of our nation and our sanctuary. Whatever Heaven wills, he will do."	59 porquanto é preferível morrer no combate, que ver nosso povo perseguido e profanado nosso santuário.
