1 When Simon heard that Trypho was gathering a large army to invade and ravage the land of Judah,	1 Supo Simón que había juntado Trifón un ejército numeroso para ir a devastar el país de Judá.
2 and saw that the people were in dread and terror, he went up to Jerusalem. There he assembled the people	2 Viendo al pueblo espantado y medroso, subió a Jerusalén, reunió al pueblo
3 and exhorted them in these words: "You know what I, my brothers, and my father's house have done for the laws and the sanctuary; what battles and disasters we have been through.	3 y le exhortó diciendo: «Vosotros sabéis todo lo que hemos hecho mis hermanos, la casa de mi padre y yo por la Ley y el Lugar Santo, y las guerras y tribulaciones que hemos sufrido.
4 It was for the sake of these, for the sake of Israel, that all my brothers have perished, and I alone am left.	4 Por esta causa, por Israel, han muerto mis hermanos todos y he quedado yo solo.
5 Far be it from me, then, to save my own life in any time of distress, for I am not better than my brothers.	5 Lejos de mí ahora mirar por salvar mi vida en cualquier tiempo de angustia, que no soy yo mejor que mis hermanos;
6 Rather will I avenge my nation and the sanctuary, as well as your wives and children, for all the nations out of hatred have united to destroy us."	6 sino que vengaré a mi nación, al Lugar Santo y a vuestras mujeres e hijos, puesto que, impulsados por el odio, se han unido todos los gentiles para aniquilarnos».
7 As the people heard these words, their spirit was rekindled.	7 Al oír estas palabras, se enardecieron los ánimos del pueblo
8 They shouted in reply: "You are our leader in place of your brothers Judas and Jonathan.	8 y respondieron en alta voz diciendo: «Tú eres nuestro guía en lugar de Judas y de tu hermano Jonatán;
9 Fight our battles, and we will do everything that you tell us."	9 toma la dirección de nuestra guerra y haremos cuanto nos mandes».
10 So Simon mustered all the men able to fight, and quickly completing the walls of Jerusalem, fortified it on every side.	10 Reunió entonces Simón a todos los hombres aptos para la guerra y se dio prisa en acabar las murallas de Jerusalén hasta que la fortificó en todo su contorno.
11 He sent Jonathan, son of Absalom, to Joppa with a large force; Jonathan drove out the occupants and remained there.	11 Envió a Jonatán, hijo de Absalón, a Joppe con un importante destacamento, el cual expulsó a los que en la ciudad estaban y se estableció en ella.
12 Then Trypho moved from Ptolemais with a large army to invade the land of Judah, bringing Jonathan with him as a prisoner.	12 Partió Trifón de Tolemaida con un ejercito numeroso para entrar en el país de Judá llevando consigo prisionero a Jonatán.
13 But Simon pitched his camp at Adida, facing the plain.	13 Simón puso su campamento en Jadidá, frente a la llanura.
14 When Trypho learned that Simon had succeeded his brother Jonathan, and that he intended to fight him, he sent envoys to him with this message:	14 Al enterarse Trifón de que Simón había sucedido en el mando a su hermano Jonatán y que estaba preparado para entrar con él en batalla, le envió mensajeros diciéndole:
15 "We have detained your brother Jonathan on account of the money that he owed the royal treasury in connection with the offices that he held.	15 «Tenemos detenido a tu hermano Jonatán por las deudas contraídas con el tesoro real en el desempeño de su cargo.
16 Therefore, if you send us a hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons as hostages to guarantee that when he is set free he will not revolt against us, we will release him."	16 Envíanos, pues, cien talentos de plata y a dos de sus hijos como rehenes, no sea que una vez libre se rebele contra nosotros. Entonces le soltaremos».
17 Although Simon knew that they were speaking deceitfully to him, he gave orders to get the money and the boys, for fear of provoking much hostility among the people, who might say	17 Simón, aunque se dio cuenta de que le hablaban con falsedad, envió a buscar el dinero y los niños para no provocar contra sí una gran enemistad del pueblo que diría:
18 that Jonathan perished because Simon would not send Trypho the money and the boys.	18 «Porque no envié yo el dinero y los niños, ha muerto Jonatán».
19 So he sent the boys and the hundred talents; but Trypho broke his promise and would not let Jonathan go.	19 Envió, pues, los niños y los cien talentos, pero Trifón faltó a su palabra y no soltó a Jonatán.
20 Next he began to invade and ravage the country. His troops went around by the road that leads to Adora, but Simon and his army moved along opposite him everywhere he went.	20 Después de esto, se puso Trifón en marcha para invadir la región y devastarla. Dio un rodeo por el camino de Adorá, mientras Simón y su ejército obstaculizaban su marcha dondequiera que iba.
21 The men in the citadel sent messengers to Trypho, urging him to come to them by way of the desert, and to send them provisions.	21 Los de la Ciudadela enviaron a Trifón legados dándole prisa a que viniese donde ellos a través del desierto y les enviase víveres.
22 Although Trypho got all his cavalry ready to go, there was a heavy fall of snow that night, and he could not go. So he left for Gilead.	22 Preparó Trifón toda su caballería para ir, pero aquella noche cayó tal cantidad de nieve que le impidió acudir allá. Partió de allí y se fue a la región de Galaad.
23 When he was approaching Baskama, he had Jonathan killed and buried there.	23 Cuando se encontraba cerca de Bascamá, hizo matar a Jonatán, que fue enterrado allí.
24 Then Trypho returned to his own country.	24 Luego dio Trifón la vuelta y se marchó a su país.
25 Simon sent for the remains of his brother Jonathan, and buried him in Modein, the city of his fathers.	25 Envió Simón a recoger los huesos de su hermano Jonatán y le dio sepultura en Modín, ciudad de sus padres.
26 All Israel bewailed him with solemn lamentation, mourning over him for many days.	26 Todo Israel hizo gran duelo por él y le lloró muchos días.
27 Then Simon erected over the tomb of his father and his brothers a monument of stones, polished front and back, and raised high enough to be seen at a distance.	27 Simón construyó sobre el sepulcro de su padre y sus hermanos un mausoleo alto, que pudiera verse, de piedras pulidas por delante y por detrás.
28 He set up seven pyramids facing one another for his father and his mother and his four brothers.	28 Levantó siete pirámides, una frente a otra, dedicadas a su padre, a su madre y a sus cuatro hermanos.
29 For the pyramids he devised a setting of big columns, on which he carved suits of armor as a perpetual memorial, and next to the armor he placed carved ships, which could be seen by all who sailed the sea.	29 Levantó alrededor de ellas grandes columnas y sobre las columnas hizo panoplias para recuerdo eterno. Al lado de las panoplias esculpió unas naves que pudieran ser contempladas por todos los que navegaran por el mar.
30 This tomb which he built at Modein is there to the present day.	30 Tal fue el mausoleo que construyó en Modín y que subsiste en nuestros días.
31 Trypho dealt treacherously with the young King Antiochus. He killed him	31 Trifón, procediendo insidiosamente con el joven rey Antíoco, le dio muerte.
32 and assumed the kingship in his place, putting on the crown of Asia. Thus he brought much evil on the land.	32 Ocupó el reino en su lugar, se ciñó la diadema de Asia y causó grandes estragos en el país.
33 Simon, on his part, built up the strongholds of Judea, strengthening their fortifications with high towers, thick walls, and gates with bars, and he stored up provisions in the fortresses.	33 Simón, por su parte, reconstruyó las fortalezas de Judea, las rodeó de altas torres y grandes murallas con puertas y cerrojos, y almacenó víveres en ellas.
34 Simon also sent chosen men to King Demetrius with the request that he grant the land a release from taxation, for all that Trypho did was to plunder the land.	34 Además escogió Simón hombres que envió al rey Demetrio intentando conseguir una remisión para la región, dado que toda la actividad de Trifón había sido un continuo robo.
35 In reply, King Demetrius sent him the following letter:	35 El rey Demetrio contestó a su petición y le escribió la siguiente carta:
36 "King Demetrius sends greetings to Simon the high priest, the friend of kings, and to the elders and the Jewish people.	36 «El rey Demetrio saluda a Simón, sumo sacerdote y amigo de reyes, a los ancianos y a la nación de los judíos.
37 We have received the gold crown and the palm branch that you sent. We are willing to be on most peaceful terms with you and to write to our official to grant you release from tribute.	37 Hemos recibido la corona de oro y la palma que nos habéis enviado y estamos dispuestos a concertar con vosotros una paz completa y a escribir a los funcionarios que os concedan la remisión de las deudas.
38 Whatever we have guaranteed to you remains in force, and the strongholds that you have built shall remain yours.	38 Cuanto hemos decidido sobre vosotros, quede firme y sean vuestras las fortalezas que habéis construido.
39 We remit any oversights and defaults incurred up to now, as well as the crown tax that you owe. Any other tax that may have been collected in Jerusalem shall no longer be collected there.	39 Os perdonamos los errores y delitos cometidos hasta el día de hoy y la corona que nos debéis. Si algún otro tributo se percibía en Jerusalén, ya no se exija.
40 If any of you are qualified for enrollment in our service, let them be enrolled. Let there be peace between us."	40 Y si algunos de vosotros son aptos para alistarse en nuestra guardia, alístense y haya paz entre nosotros».
41 Thus in the year one hundred and seventy, the yoke of the Gentiles was removed from Israel,	41 El año 170 quedó Israel libre del yugo de los gentiles
42 and the people began to write in their records and contracts, "In the first year of Simon, high priest, governor, and leader of the Jews."	42 y el pueblo comenzó a escribir en las actas y contratos: «En el año primero de Simón, gran sumo sacerdote, estratega y hegumeno de los judíos.
43 In those days Simon besieged Gazara and surrounded it with troops. He made a siege machine, pushed it up against the city, and attacked and captured one of the towers.	43 Por aquellos días puso cerco Simón a Gázara y la rodeó con sus tropas. Construyó una torre móvil que acercó a la ciudad y abriendo brecha en un baluarte, lo tomó.
44 The men who had been on the siege machine jumped down into the city and caused a great tumult there.	44 Saltaron los de la torre a la ciudad y se produjo en ella gran agitación.
45 The men of the city, joined by their wives and children, went up on the wall, with their garments rent, and cried out in loud voices, begging Simon to grant them peace.	45 Los habitantes, rasgados los vestidos, subieron a la muralla con sus mujeres e hijos y pidieron a grandes gritos a Simón que les diese la mano.
46 "Do not treat us according to our evil deeds," they said, "but according to your mercy."	46 «No nos trates, le decían, según nuestras maldades, sino según tu misericordia».
47 So Simon came to terms with them and did not destroy them. He made them leave the city, however, and he purified the houses in which there were idols. Then he entered the city with hymns and songs of praise.	47 Simón se reconcilió con ellos y no les atacó, pero les echó de la ciudad y mandó purificar las casas en que había ídolos. Entonces entró en ella con himnos y bendiciones.
48 After removing from it everything that was impure, he settled there men who observed the law. He improved its fortifications and built himself a residence.	48 Echó de ella toda impureza, estableció en ella hombres observantes de la Ley, la fortificó y se construyó en ella para sí una residencia.
49 The men in the citadel in Jerusalem were prevented from going out into the country and back for the purchase of food; they suffered greatly from hunger, and many of them died of starvation.	49 Los de la Ciudadela de Jerusalén se veían imposibilitados de entrar y salir por la región, de comprar y de vender. Sufrían grave escasez y bastantes de ellos habían perecido de hambre.
50 They finally cried out to Simon for peace, and he gave them peace. He expelled them from the citadel and cleansed it of impurities.	50 Clamaron a Simón que hiciera con ellos la paz y Simón se lo concedió. Les echó de allí y purificó de inmundicias la Ciudadela.
51 On the twenty-third day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, the Jews entered the citadel with shouts of jubilation, waving of palm branches, the music of harps and cymbals and lyres, and the singing of hymns and canticles, because a great enemy of Israel had been destroyed.	51 Entraron en ella el día veintitrés del segundo mes del año 171 con aclamaciones y ramos de palma, con liras, címbalos y arpas, con himnos y cantos, porque un gran enemigo había sido vencido y expulsado de Israel.
52 Simon decreed that this day should be celebrated every year with rejoicing. He also strengthened the fortifications of the temple hill alongside the citadel, and he and his companions dwelt there.	52 Simón dispuso que este día se celebrara con júbilo cada año. Fortificó el monte del Templo que está al lado de la Ciudadela y habitó allí con los suyos.
53 Seeing that his son John was now a grown man, Simon made him commander of all his soldiers, with his residence in Gazara.	53 Y viendo Simón que su hijo Juan era todo un hombre, le nombró jefe de todas las fuerzas con residencia en Gázara.
