Exodus 4

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 "But," objected Moses, "suppose they will not believe me, nor listen to my plea? For they may say, 'The LORD did not appear to you.'"	1 Moïse reprit la parole et dit: "Et s'ils ne me croient pas et n'écoutent pas ma voix, mais me disent:Yahvé ne t'est pas apparu?"
2 The LORD therefore asked him, "What is that in your hand?" "A staff," he answered.	2 Yahvé lui dit: "Qu'as-tu en main? -- Un bâton, dit-il. --
3 The LORD then said, "Throw it on the ground." When he threw it on the ground it was changed into a serpent, and Moses shied away from it.	3 Jette-le à terre", lui dit Yahvé. Moïse le jeta à terre, le bâton se changea en serpent et Moïse fuitdevant lui.
4 "Now, put out your hand," the LORD said to him, "and take hold of its tail." So he put out his hand and laid hold of it, and it became a staff in his hand.	4 Yahvé dit à Moïse: "Avance la main et prends-le par la queue." Il avança la main, le prit, et dans samain il redevint un bâton.
5 "This will take place so that they may believe," he continued, "that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, did appear to you."	5 "Afin qu'ils croient que Yahvé t'est apparu, le Dieu de leurs pères, le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu d'Isaacet le Dieu de Jacob."
6 Again the LORD said to him, "Put your hand in your bosom." He put it in his bosom, and when he withdrew it, to his surprise his hand was leprous, like snow.	6 Yahvé lui dit encore: "Mets ta main dans ton sein." Il mit la main dans son sein, puis la retira, et voicique sa main était lépreuse, blanche comme neige.
7 The LORD then said, "Now, put your hand back in your bosom." Moses put his hand back in his bosom, and when he withdrew it, to his surprise it was again like the rest of his body.	7 Yahvé lui dit: "Remets ta main dans ton sein." Il remit la main dans son sein et la retira de son sein, etvoici qu'elle était redevenue comme le reste de son corps.
8 "If they will not believe you, nor heed the message of the first sign, they should believe the message of the second.	8 "Ainsi, s'ils ne te croient pas et ne sont pas convaincus par le premier signe, ils croiront à cause dusecond signe.
9 And if they will not believe even these two signs, nor heed your plea, take some water from the river and pour it on the dry land. The water you take from the river will become blood on the dry land."	9 Et s'ils ne croient pas, même avec ces deux signes, et qu'ils n'écoutent pas ta voix, tu prendras de l'eaudu Fleuve et tu la répandras par terre, et l'eau que tu auras puisée au Fleuve se changera en sang sur la terresèche."
10 Moses, however, said to the LORD, "If you please, LORD, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past, nor recently, nor now that you have spoken to your servant; but I am slow of speech and tongue."	10 Moïse dit à Yahvé: "Excuse-moi, mon Seigneur, je ne suis pas doué pour la parole, ni d'hier nid'avant-hier, ni même depuis que tu adresses la parole à ton serviteur, car ma bouche et ma langue sontpesantes."
11 The LORD said to him, "Who gives one man speech and makes another deaf and dumb? Or who gives sight to one and makes another blind? Is it not I, the LORD?	11 Yahvé lui dit: "Qui a doté l'homme d'une bouche? Qui rend muet ou sourd, clairvoyant ou aveugle?N'est-ce pas moi, Yahvé?
12 Go, then! It is I who will assist you in speaking and will teach you what you are to say."	12 Va maintenant, je serai avec ta bouche et je t'indiquerai ce que tu devras dire."
13 Yet he insisted, "If you please, Lord, send someone else!"	13 Moïse dit encore: "Excuse-moi, mon Seigneur, envoie, je t'en prie, qui tu voudras."
14 Then the LORD became angry with Moses and said, "Have you not your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know that he is an eloquent speaker. Besides, he is now on his way to meet you.	14 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma contre Moïse et il dit: "N'y a-t-il pas Aaron, ton frère, le lévite? Jesais qu'il parle bien, lui; le voici qui vient à ta rencontre et à ta vue il se réjouira en son coeur.
15 When he sees you, his heart will be glad. You are to speak to him, then, and put the words in his mouth. I will assist both you and him in speaking and will teach the two of you what you are to do.	15 Tu lui parleras et tu mettras les paroles dans sa bouche. Moi, je serai avec ta bouche et avec sabouche, et je vous indiquerai ce que vous devrez faire.
16 He shall speak to the people for you: he shall be your spokesman, and you shall be as God to him.	16 C'est lui qui parlera pour toi au peuple; il te tiendra lieu de bouche et tu seras pour lui un dieu.
17 Take this staff in your hand; with it you are to perform the signs."	17 Quant à ce bâton, prends-le dans ta main, c'est par lui que tu accompliras les signes."
18 After this Moses returned to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, "Let me go back, please, to my kinsmen in Egypt, to see whether they are still living." Jethro replied, "Go in peace."	18 Moïse s'en alla et retourna vers Jéthro, son beau-père. Il lui dit: "Permets que je m'en aille et que jeretourne vers mes frères qui sont en Egypte pour voir s'ils sont encore en vie." Jéthro lui répondit: "Va en paix."
19 In Midian the LORD said to Moses, "Go back to Egypt, for all the men who sought your life are dead."	19 Yahvé dit à Moïse en Madiân: "Va, retourne en Egypte, car ils sont morts, tous ceux qui cherchaientà te faire périr."
20 So Moses took his wife and his sons, and started back to the land of Egypt, with them riding the ass. The staff of God he carried with him.	20 Moïse prit sa femme et son fils, les fit monter sur un âne et s'en retourna au pays d'Egypte. Moïseprit en main le bâton de Dieu.
21 The LORD said to him, "On your return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have put in your power. I will make him obstinate, however, so that he will not let the people go.	21 Yahvé dit à Moïse: "Tandis que tu retourneras en Egypte, vois les prodiges que j'ai mis en tonpouvoir: tu les accompliras devant Pharaon, mais moi, j'endurcirai son coeur et il ne laissera pas partir le peuple.
22 So you shall say to Pharaoh: Thus says the LORD: Israel is my son, my first-born.	22 Alors tu diras à Pharaon: Ainsi parle Yahvé: mon fils premier-né, c'est Israël.
23 Hence I tell you: Let my son go, that he may serve me. If you refuse to let him go, I warn you, I will kill your son, your first-born."	23 Je t'avais dit: Laisse aller mon fils, qu'il me serve. Puisque tu refuses de le laisser aller, eh bien, moi,je vais faire périr ton fils premier-né."
24 On the journey, at a place where they spent the night, the Lord came upon Moses and would have killed him.	24 Et ce fut en route, à la halte de la nuit, que Yahvé vint à sa rencontre et chercha à le faire mourir.
25 But Zipporah took a piece of flint and cut off her son's foreskin and, touching his person, she said, "You are a spouse of blood to me."	25 Cippora prit un silex, coupa le prépuce de son fils et elle en toucha ses pieds. Et elle dit: "Tu es pourmoi un époux de sang."
26 Then God let Moses go. At that time she said, "A spouse of blood," in regard to the circumcision.	26 Et il se retira de lui. Elle avait dit alors "Epoux de sang", ce qui s'applique aux circoncisions.
27 The LORD said to Aaron, "Go into the desert to meet Moses." So he went, and when they met at the mountain of God, Aaron kissed him.	27 Yahvé dit à Aaron: "Va à la rencontre de Moïse en direction du désert." Il partit, le rencontra à lamontagne de Dieu et l'embrassa.
28 Moses informed him of all the LORD had said in sending him, and of the various signs he had enjoined upon him.	28 Moïse informa Aaron de toutes les paroles de Yahvé, qui l'avait envoyé, et de tous les signes qu'illui avait ordonné d'accomplir.
29 Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders of the Israelites.	29 Moïse partit avec Aaron et ils réunirent tous les anciens des Israélites.
30 Aaron told them everything the LORD had said to Moses, and he performed the signs before the people.	30 Aaron répéta toutes les paroles que Yahvé avait dites à Moïse; il accomplit les signes aux yeux dupeuple.
31 The people believed, and when they heard that the LORD was concerned about them and had seen their affliction, they bowed down in worship.	31 Le peuple crut et se réjouit de ce que Yahvé avait visité les Israélites et avait vu leur misère. Ilss'agenouillèrent et se prosternèrent.5, 1 Après cela, Moïse et Aaron vinrent trouver Pharaon et lui dirent: "Ainsiparle Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël: Laisse partir mon peuple, qu'il célèbre une fête pour moi dans le désert."
