1 When the people became aware of Moses' delay in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, "Come, make us a god who will be our leader; as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him."	1 וירא העם כי בשש משה לרדת מן ההר ויקהל העם על אהרן ויאמרו אליו קום עשה לנו אלהים אשר ילכו לפנינו כי זה משה האיש אשר העלנו מארץ מצרים לא ידענו מה היה לו
2 Aaron replied, "Have your wives and sons and daughters take off the golden earrings they are wearing, and bring them to me."	2 ויאמר אלהם אהרן פרקו נזמי הזהב אשר באזני נשיכם בניכם ובנתיכם והביאו אלי
3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron,	3 ויתפרקו כל העם את נזמי הזהב אשר באזניהם ויביאו אל אהרן
4 who accepted their offering, and fashioning this gold with a graving tool, made a molten calf. Then they cried out, "This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt."	4 ויקח מידם ויצר אתו בחרט ויעשהו עגל מסכה ויאמרו אלה אלהיך ישראל אשר העלוך מארץ מצרים
5 On seeing this, Aaron built an altar before the calf and proclaimed, "Tomorrow is a feast of the LORD."	5 וירא אהרן ויבן מזבח לפניו ויקרא אהרן ויאמר חג ליהוה מחר
6 Early the next day the people offered holocausts and brought peace offerings. Then they sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.	6 וישכימו ממחרת ויעלו עלת ויגשו שלמים וישב העם לאכל ושתו ויקמו לצחק
7 With that, the LORD said to Moses, "Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved.	7 וידבר יהוה אל משה לך רד כי שחת עמך אשר העלית מארץ מצרים
8 They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it, sacrificing to it and crying out, 'This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!'	8 סרו מהר מן הדרך אשר צויתם עשו להם עגל מסכה וישתחוו לו ויזבחו לו ויאמרו אלה אלהיך ישראל אשר העלוך מארץ מצרים
9 I see how stiff-necked this people is," continued the LORD to Moses.	9 ויאמר יהוה אל משה ראיתי את העם הזה והנה עם קשה ערף הוא
10 "Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation."	10 ועתה הניחה לי ויחר אפי בהם ואכלם ואעשה אותך לגוי גדול
11 But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying, "Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand?	11 ויחל משה את פני יהוה אלהיו ויאמר למה יהוה יחרה אפך בעמך אשר הוצאת מארץ מצרים בכח גדול וביד חזקה
12 Why should the Egyptians say, 'With evil intent he brought them out, that he might kill them in the mountains and exterminate them from the face of the earth'? Let your blazing wrath die down; relent in punishing your people.	12 למה יאמרו מצרים לאמר ברעה הוציאם להרג אתם בהרים ולכלתם מעל פני האדמה שוב מחרון אפך והנחם על הרעה לעמך
13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, and how you swore to them by your own self, saying, 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I promised, I will give your descendants as their perpetual heritage.'"	13 זכר לאברהם ליצחק ולישראל עבדיך אשר נשבעת להם בך ותדבר אלהם ארבה את זרעכם ככוכבי השמים וכל הארץ הזאת אשר אמרתי אתן לזרעכם ונחלו לעלם
14 So the LORD relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people.	14 וינחם יהוה על הרעה אשר דבר לעשות לעמו
15 Moses then turned and came down the mountain with the two tablets of the commandments in his hands, tablets that were written on both sides, front and back;	15 ויפן וירד משה מן ההר ושני לחת העדת בידו לחת כתבים משני עבריהם מזה ומזה הם כתבים
16 tablets that were made by God, having inscriptions on them that were engraved by God himself.	16 והלחת מעשה אלהים המה והמכתב מכתב אלהים הוא חרות על הלחת
17 Now, when Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, "That sounds like a battle in the camp."	17 וישמע יהושע את קול העם ברעה ויאמר אל משה קול מלחמה במחנה
18 But Moses answered, "It does not sound like cries of victory, nor does it sound like cries of defeat; the sounds that I hear are cries of revelry."	18 ויאמר אין קול ענות גבורה ואין קול ענות חלושה קול ענות אנכי שמע
19 As he drew near the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. With that, Moses' wrath flared up, so that he threw the tablets down and broke them on the base of the mountain.	19 ויהי כאשר קרב אל המחנה וירא את העגל ומחלת ויחר אף משה וישלך מידו את הלחת וישבר אתם תחת ההר
20 Taking the calf they had made, he fused it in the fire and then ground it down to powder, which he scattered on the water and made the Israelites drink.	20 ויקח את העגל אשר עשו וישרף באש ויטחן עד אשר דק ויזר על פני המים וישק את בני ישראל
21 Moses asked Aaron, "What did this people ever do to you that you should lead them into so grave a sin?" Aaron replied, "Let not my lord be angry.	21 ויאמר משה אל אהרן מה עשה לך העם הזה כי הבאת עליו חטאה גדלה
22 You know well enough how prone the people are to evil.	22 ויאמר אהרן אל יחר אף אדני אתה ידעת את העם כי ברע הוא
23 They said to me, 'Make us a god to be our leader; as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.'	23 ויאמרו לי עשה לנו אלהים אשר ילכו לפנינו כי זה משה האיש אשר העלנו מארץ מצרים לא ידענו מה היה לו
24 So I told them, 'Let anyone who has gold jewelry take it off.' They gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out."	24 ואמר להם למי זהב התפרקו ויתנו לי ואשלכהו באש ויצא העגל הזה
25 When Moses realized that, to the scornful joy of their foes, Aaron had let the people run wild,	25 וירא משה את העם כי פרע הוא כי פרעה אהרן לשמצה בקמיהם
26 he stood at the gate of the camp and cried, "Whoever is for the LORD, let him come to me!" All the Levites then rallied to him,	26 ויעמד משה בשער המחנה ויאמר מי ליהוה אלי ויאספו אליו כל בני לוי
27 and he told them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Put your sword on your hip, every one of you! Now go up and down the camp, from gate to gate, and slay your own kinsmen, your friends and neighbors!"	27 ויאמר להם כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל שימו איש חרבו על ירכו עברו ושובו משער לשער במחנה והרגו איש את אחיו ואיש את רעהו ואיש את קרבו
28 The Levites carried out the command of Moses, and that day there fell about three thousand of the people.	28 ויעשו בני לוי כדבר משה ויפל מן העם ביום ההוא כשלשת אלפי איש
29 Then Moses said, "Today you have been dedicated to the LORD, for you were against your own sons and kinsmen, to bring a blessing upon yourselves this day."	29 ויאמר משה מלאו ידכם היום ליהוה כי איש בבנו ובאחיו ולתת עליכם היום ברכה
30 On the next day Moses said to the people, "You have committed a grave sin. I will go up to the LORD, then; perhaps I may be able to make atonement for your sin."	30 ויהי ממחרת ויאמר משה אל העם אתם חטאתם חטאה גדלה ועתה אעלה אל יהוה אולי אכפרה בעד חטאתכם
31 So Moses went back to the LORD and said, "Ah, this people has indeed committed a grave sin in making a god of gold for themselves!	31 וישב משה אל יהוה ויאמר אנא חטא העם הזה חטאה גדלה ויעשו להם אלהי זהב
32 If you would only forgive their sin! If you will not, then strike me out of the book that you have written."	32 ועתה אם תשא חטאתם ואם אין מחני נא מספרך אשר כתבת
33 The LORD answered, "Him only who has sinned against me will I strike out of my book.	33 ויאמר יהוה אל משה מי אשר חטא לי אמחנו מספרי
34 Now, go and lead the people whither I have told you. My angel will go before you. When it is time for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin."	34 ועתה לך נחה את העם אל אשר דברתי לך הנה מלאכי ילך לפניך וביום פקדי ופקדתי עליהם חטאתם
35 Thus the LORD smote the people for having had Aaron make the calf for them.	35 ויגף יהוה את העם על אשר עשו את העגל אשר עשה אהרן
