1 Now in those days Judith, daughter of Merari, son of Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son of Gideon, son of Raphain, son of Ahitob, son of Elijah, son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Simeon, son of Israel, heard of this.	1 In quei giorni venne a conoscenza di questi fatti Giuditta, figlia di Merari, figlio di Oks, figlio di Giuseppe, figlio di Oziel, figlio di Elkia, figlio di Anania, figlio di Gedeone, figlio di Rafain, figlio di Achitob, figlio di Elia, figlio di Chelkia, figlio di Eliàb, figlio di Natanaèl, figlio di Salamiel, figlio di Sarasadai, figlio d'Israele.
2 Her husband, Manasseh, of her own tribe and clan, had died at the time of the barley harvest.	2 Suo marito era stato Manasse, della stessa tribù e della stessa famiglia di lei; egli era morto al tempo della mietitura dell'orzo.
3 While he was in the field supervising those who bound the sheaves, he suffered sunstroke; and he died of this illness in Bethulia, his native city. He was buried with his forefathers in the field between Dothan and Balamon.	3 Stava infatti sorvegliando quelli che legavano i covoni nella campagna, quando fu colpito da un'insolazione al capo; dovette adagiarsi sul letto e morì in Betulia, sua città. Lo seppellirono con i suoi padri nel campo tra Dotain e Balamon.
4 The widowed Judith remained three years and four months at home,	4 Giuditta, rimasta vedova, viveva nella sua casa da tre anni e quattro mesi.
5 where she set up a tent for herself on the roof of her house. She put sackcloth about her loins and wore widow's weeds.	5 Si era fatta costruire una tenda sul terrazzo della propria casa, aveva cinto i suoi fianchi di sacco e portava gli abiti della vedovanza.
6 She fasted all the days of her widowhood, except sabbath eves and sabbaths, new moon eves and new moons, feastdays and holidays of the house of Israel.	6 Digiunava tutti i giorni, da quando era vedova, eccettuate le vigilie dei sabati e i sabati, le vigilie dei noviluni e i noviluni, le feste e i giorni di letizia per il popolo d'Israele.
7 She was beautifully formed and lovely to behold. Her husband, Manasseh, had left her gold and silver, servants and maids, livestock and fields, which she was maintaining.	7 Era bella d'aspetto e molto avvenente a vederla e suo marito Manasse le aveva lasciato oro e argento, servi e ancelle, bestiame e terreni; essa dimorava in mezzo a tutto questo.
8 No one had a bad word to say about her, for she was a very God-fearing woman.	8 Non c'era nessuno che potesse dir male sul suo conto, perché temeva grandemente Dio.
9 When Judith, therefore, heard of the harsh words which the people, discouraged by their lack of water, had spoken against their ruler, and of all that Uzziah had said to them in reply, swearing that he would hand over the city to the Assyrians at the end of five days,	9 Ella dunque venne a conoscenza delle esasperate parole che il popolo aveva rivolto ai capi, perché s'erano scoraggiati per la penuria d'acqua, e venne pure a conoscere tutte le risposte che aveva dato loro Ozia, come egli avesse giurato loro di consegnare la città agli Assiri dopo cinque giorni.
10 she sent the maid who was in charge of all her things to ask Uzziah, Chabris, and Charmis, the elders of the city, to visit her.	10 Allora mandò la sua ancella preposta all'amministrazione di tutte le sue sostanze a chiamare Cabri e Carmi, gli anziani della sua città.
11 When they came, she said to them: "Listen to me, you rulers of the people of Bethulia. What you said to the people today is not proper. When you promised to hand over the city to our enemies at the end of five days unless within that time the Lord comes to our aid, you interposed between God and yourselves this oath which you took.	11 Giunti che furono presso di lei, disse loro: "Ascoltatemi, o capi degli abitanti di Betulia! Non è stato opportuno il discorso che avete fatto oggi davanti al popolo, interponendo questo giuramento pronunciato tra Dio e voi di consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, se nel frattempo il Signore non vi viene in aiuto.
12 Who are you, then, that you should have put God to the test this day, setting yourselves in the place of God in human affairs?	12 Ora, chi siete voi, che avete tentato Dio in mezzo ai figli degli uomini?
13 It is the Lord Almighty for whom you are laying down conditions; will you never understand anything?	13 Ora voi volete mettere alla prova il Signore onnipotente, ma non comprenderete nulla mai.
14 You cannot plumb the depths of the human heart or grasp the workings of the human mind; how then can you fathom God, who has made all these things, discern his mind, and understand his plan? "No, my brothers, do not anger the Lord our God.	14 Se non siete capaci di scrutare la profondità del cuore dell'uomo né di afferrare i pensieri della sua mente, come potreste scandagliare Dio, che ha fatto tutto ciò, conoscere la sua mente e comprendere i suoi disegni? No, fratelli, non provocate a ira il Signore nostro Dio.
15 For if he does not wish to come to our aid within the five days, he has it equally within his power to protect us at such time as he pleases, or to destroy us in the face of our enemies.	15 Se egli non vuole soccorrerci nel periodo di cinque giorni, egli ha il potere di difenderci nei giorni che vuole, come anche di distruggerci in faccia ai nostri nemici.
16 It is not for you to make the Lord our God give surety for his plans. "God is not man that he should be moved by threats, nor human, that he may be given an ultimatum.	16 Voi però non vogliate ipotecare i disegni del Signore, nostro Dio, perché Dio non è come un uomo cui si possano fare delle minacce, o un figlio d'uomo sul quale si possano esercitare delle pressioni.
17 "So while we wait for the salvation that comes from him, let us call upon him to help us, and he will hear our cry if it is his good pleasure.	17 Perciò, attendendo con costanza la salvezza che viene da lui, invochiamolo in nostro aiuto ed esaudirà il nostro grido, se a lui piacerà.
18 For there has not risen among us in recent generations, nor does there exist today, any tribe, or clan, or town, or city of ours that worships gods made by hands, as happened in former days.	18 Invero, nella nostra generazione non c'è stata né esiste oggi tribù o famiglia o popolo o città tra noi che adori gli dèi fatti da mano d'uomo, come avvenne nei tempi passati.
19 It was for such conduct that our forefathers were handed over to the sword and to pillage, and fell with great destruction before our enemies.	19 Per questo i nostri padri furono abbandonati alla spada e alla devastazione e caddero miseramente al cospetto dei loro nemici.
20 But since we acknowledge no other god but the Lord, we hope that he will not disdain us or any of our people.	20 Noi invece non riconosciamo altro Dio all'infuori di lui, onde speriamo che non vorrà disdegnare noi né la nostra nazione.
21 If we are taken, all Judea will fall, our sanctuary will be plundered, and God will make us pay for its profanation with our life's blood.	21 Se noi saremo presi, sarà presa anche l'intera Giudea, sarà saccheggiato il nostro santuario e Dio chiederà conto al nostro sangue di quella profanazione.
22 For the slaughter of our kinsmen, for the taking of exiles from the land, and for the devastation of our inheritance, he will lay the guilt on our heads. Wherever we shall be enslaved among the nations, we shall be a mockery and a reproach in the eyes of our masters.	22 L'uccisione dei nostri fratelli, la deportazione del paese, la devastazione della nostra eredità, Dio la farà ricadere sul nostro capo in mezzo alle nazioni pagane, tra le quali diventeremo schiavi; saremo allora motivo di scandalo e di derisione di fronte ai nostri padroni.
23 Our enslavement will not be turned to our benefit, but the Lord our God, will maintain it to our disgrace.	23 La nostra schiavitù non si volgerà in benevolenza, ma il Signore Dio nostro la volgerà a nostro disonore.
24 "Therefore, my brothers, let us set an example for our kinsmen. Their lives depend on us, and the defense of the sanctuary, the temple, and the altar rests with us.	24 Ora pertanto, fratelli, dimostriamo ai nostri fratelli che da noi dipende la loro vita e che le cose sante, il tempio e l'altare riposano su di noi.
25 Besides all this, we should be grateful to the Lord our God, for putting us to the test, as he did our forefathers.	25 Oltre tutto ringraziamo il Signore, nostro Dio, che ci mette alla prova, come già i nostri padri.
26 Recall how he dealt with Abraham, and how he tried Isaac, and all that happened to Jacob in Syrian Mesopotamia while he was tending the flocks of Laban, his mother's brother.	26 Ricordate quanto fece con Abramo, a quante prove sottopose Isacco e quanto avvenne a Giacobbe in Mesopotamia di Siria, quando pascolava le greggi di Labano, suo zio materno.
27 Not for vengeance did the Lord put them in the crucible to try their hearts, nor has he done so with us. It is by way of admonition that he chastises those who are close to him."	27 Come li fece passare al crogiolo per scrutare i loro cuori, così non è che vuole vendicarsi di noi, ma è a scopo di correzione che il Signore castiga quelli che gli sono vicino".
28 Then Uzziah said to her: "All that you have said was spoken with good sense, and no one can gainsay your words.	28 Ozia le rispose: "Tutto ciò che hai detto, l'hai proferito con cuore retto e nessuno può contraddire le tue parole.
29 Not today only is your wisdom made evident, but from your earliest years all the people have recognized your prudence, which corresponds to the worthy dispositions of your heart.	29 Perché non da oggi è palese la tua sapienza, ma dall'inizio dei tuoi giorni tutto il popolo riconosce la tua prudenza, così come è nobile l'indole del tuo cuore.
30 The people, however, were so tortured with thirst that they forced us to speak to them as we did, and to bind ourselves by an oath that we cannot break.	30 Ma il popolo soffre tremendamente la sete e ci ha costretto ad agire come noi abbiamo loro promesso e a prendere sopra di noi la responsabilità di un giuramento che non potremo violare.
31 But now, God-fearing woman that you are, pray for us that the Lord may send rain to fill up our cisterns, lest we be weakened still further."	31 Ma ora, prega per noi, perché sei una donna pia, e il Signore invierà la pioggia a riempire le nostre cisterne e noi non verremo meno".
32 Then Judith said to them: "Listen to me! I will do something that will go down from generation to generation among the descendants of our race.	32 Giuditta rispose loro: "Ascoltatemi! Compirò un'azione che passerà di generazione in generazione ai figli del nostro popolo.
33 Stand at the gate tonight to let me pass through with my maid; and within the days you have specified before you will surrender the city to our enemies, the Lord will rescue Israel by my hand.	33 Questa notte voi vi troverete alla porta della città e io uscirò con la mia ancella ed entro i giorni, dopo i quali voi avete promesso di consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, il Signore per mano mia visiterà Israele.
34 You must not inquire into what I am doing, for I will not tell you until my plan has been accomplished."	34 Voi però non andate indagando sulla mia impresa, non vi dirò nulla, fino a quando non sarà compiuto ciò che ho in mente di fare".
35 Uzziah and the rulers said to her, "Go in peace, and may the Lord God go before you to take vengeance upon our enemies!"	35 Ozia e i capi le risposero: "Va' in pace e il Signore Dio sia con te per far vendetta dei nostri nemici".
36 Then they withdrew from the tent and returned to their posts.	36 E ritiratisi dalla tenda di lei, se ne andarono ai loro posti.
