1 When the noise of the crowd surrounding the council had subsided, Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, said to Achior, in the presence of the whole throng of coastland peoples, of the Moabites, and of the Ammonite mercenaries:	1 E Quand'ebber parlato quelli, Oloferne sdegnato altamente disse ad Achior;
2 "Who are you, Achior, to prophesy among us as you have done today, and to tell us not to fight against the Israelites because their God protects them? What god is there beside Nebuchadnezzar? He will send his force and destroy them from the face of the earth. Their God will not save them;	2 Giacchè tu hai profetizzato a noi, e ci hai detto, che il popolo d'Israele è difeso dal suo Dio, per farti vedere, che non v'ha altro dio, che Nabuchodonosor:
3 but we, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, will strike them down as one man, for they will be unable to withstand the force of our cavalry.	3 Quando noi avremo uccisi tutti coloro, come se fossero un sol uomo, allora anche tu perirai sotto la spada degli Assiri, e tutto Israele anderà in perdizione con te,
4 We will overwhelm them with it, and the mountains shall be drunk with their blood, and their plains filled with their corpses. Not a trace of them shall survive our attack: they shall utterly perish, says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he has spoken, and his words shall not remain unfulfilled.	4 Esperimenterai come Nabuchodonosor è il signor di tutta quanta la terra: e allora la spada delle mie genti trapasserà i tuoi fianchi, e trafitto cadrai tra feriti d'Israele, fino a tanto che tu con essi finisca, e resti senza fiato.
5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, for saying these things in a moment of perversity you shall not see my face after today, until I have taken revenge on this race of people from Egypt.	5 Ma se tu credi vera la tua profezia, non si cambi di colore il tuo volto, e il pallore, che cuopre la tua faccia stia lungi da te, se tu credi, che queste parole mie non a possano aver effetto.
6 Then at my return, the sword of my army or the spear of my servants will pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their slain.	6 Or affinchè tu sappi, che queste cose le proverai tu insieme con quelli, ecco che in questo punto tu sarai della società di quel popolo, affinchè quando eglino saran puniti dalla mia spada, tu stesso soggiaccia insieme alla stessa vendetta.
7 My servants will now conduct you to the mountain region, and leave you at one of the towns along the ascent.	7 Allora Oloferne comandò a suoi servi, che preso Achior lo conducessero a Betulia, e lo rimettessero in mano de' figliuoli d'Israele.
8 You shall not die till you are destroyed together with them.	8 E i servi di Oloferne presero Achior, e si incamminaromo per la pianura, ma quando furono vicini ai monti, uscirono fuora dei frombolieri contro di essi.
9 If you still cherish the hope that they will not be taken, then there is no need for you to be downcast. I have spoken, and my words shall not prove false in any respect."	9 E quelli piegando verso un lato del monte, legaron pei piedi, e pelle mani Achior a un albero; e così legato con funi lo lasciarono, e se ne tornarono al loro signore.
10 Then Holofernes ordered the servants who were standing by in his tent to seize Achior, conduct him to Bethulia, and hand him over to the Israelites.	10 E i figliuoli d'Israele scesi da Betulia andarono a lui,e lo sciolsero, e lo condussero a Betulia; e postolo in mezzo del popolo, lo interrogarono qual fosse il motivo, per cui gli Assiri l'avesser lasciato legato in tal guisa.
11 So the servants took him in custody and brought him out of the camp into the plain. From there they led him into the mountain region till they reached the springs below Bethulia.	11 In quel tempo eran principi in quel luogo Ozia figliuolo di Micha della tribù di Simeon, e Carmi, detto anche Gothoniel,
12 When the men of the city saw them, they seized their weapons and ran out of the city to the crest of the ridge; and all the slingers blocked the ascent of Holofernes' servants by hurling stones upon them.	12 Achior pertanto in mezzo a seniori, e in faccia a tutta la gente riferì tutto quello, che avea risposto alle interrogazioni di Oloferne, e come la gente di Oloferne avea voluto ucciderlo per aver dette quelle cose.
13 So they took cover below the mountain, where they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the mountain; then they returned to their lord.	13 E come lo stesso oloferne sdegnato dato, che egli perciò fosse messo nelle mani degl'Israeliti, perchè vinti che avesse gl'Israeliti volea far perire con vari supplizi lo stesso Achior, perchè avea detto: il Dio del cielo è loro difensore.
14 The Israelites came down to him from their city, loosed him, and brought him into Bethulia. They haled him before the rulers of the city,	14 Allorchè Achior ebbe raccontate queste cose, tutto il popolo si prostrò per terra adorando il Signore, e gemendo tutti insieme, e piangendo porfero unanimamente le loro preghiere al Signore,
15 who in those days were Uzziah, son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris, son of Gothoniel, and Charmis, son of Melchiel.	15 Dicendo: Signore Dio del cielo, e della terra, mira la superbia di costoro, e rifletti alla nostra umiliazione, e guarda in faccia i tuoi Santi, e fa vedere, come tu non disprezzi quelli, che confidono in te, e quei che presumono di se stessi, e del loro potere si vantano, tu gli umilii.
16 They then convened all the elders of the city; and all their young men, as well as the women, gathered in haste at the place of assembly. They placed Achior in the center of the throng, and Uzziah questioned him about what had happened.	16 Ma dopo i pianti, e finita che fu l'orazione del popolo, che durò tutto il giorno, consolarono Achior,
17 He replied by giving them an account of what was said in the council of Holofernes, and of all his own words among the Assyrian officers, and of all the boasting threats of Holofernes against the house of Israel.	17 Dicendo: Il Dio de' padri nostri, di cui tu hai celebrata la virtù, egli cangerà la tua sorte in guisa, che piuttosto vedrai tu la loro rovina.
18 At this the people fell prostrate and worshiped God; and they cried out:	18 Ma quando il Signore Dio nostro avrà così posti in libertà i suoi servi, sia egli Dio anche con te in mezzo a noi, onde se così ti parrà, tu viva con noi insieme con tutta la tua gente.
19 "Lord, God of heaven, behold their arrogance! Have pity on the lowliness of our people, and look with favor this day on those who are consecrated to you."	19 Allora licenziata l'adunanza, Ozia lo accolse in sua casa, e gl'imbandì una gran cena.
20 Then they reassured Achior and praised him highly.	20 E invitati tutti i seniori, finito essendo il digiuno, presero insieme ristoro.
21 Uzziah brought him from the assembly to his home, where he gave a banquet for the elders. That whole night they called upon the God of Israel for help.	21 Indi fu convocato tutto il popolo, e tutta la notte fecero orazione nella chiesa, chiedendo aiuto al Dio d'Israello.
