1 The guild prophets once said to Elisha: "There is not enough room for us to continue to live here with you.	1 Les frères prophètes dirent à Élisée: “L’endroit où nous habitons avec toi est devenu trop petit pour nous.
2 Let us go to the Jordan, where by getting one beam apiece we can build ourselves a place to live." "Go," Elisha said.	2 Descendons jusqu’au Jourdain; là, chacun prendra un tronc et nous construirons un abri pour nous loger.” Il leur dit: “Allez-y!”
3 "Please agree to accompany your servants," one of them requested. "Yes, I will come," he replied.	3 Mais l’un d’entre eux lui dit: “Accepte de venir avec tes serviteurs.” Il répondit: “J’irai.”
4 So he went with them, and when they arrived at the Jordan they began to fell trees.	4 Il partit donc avec eux, ils arrivèrent au Jourdain et coupèrent du bois.
5 While one of them was felling a tree trunk, the iron axhead slipped into the water. "O master," he cried out, "it was borrowed!"	5 Tandis que l’un d’entre eux abattait un tronc, le fer de hache tomba dans l’eau. Il se mit à crier: “Ah! Ah! Mon seigneur! Et c’était une hache qu’on m’avait prêtée!”
6 "Where did it fall?" asked the man of God. When he pointed out the spot, Elisha cut off a stick, threw it into the water, and brought the iron to the surface.	6 L’homme de Dieu lui dit: “Où est-il tombé?” L’autre lui montra l’endroit. Élisée coupa un morceau de bois, le jeta dans l’eau et fit surnager le fer.
7 "Pick it up," he said. And the man reached down and grasped it.	7 Il ajouta: “Remonte-le maintenant.” L’autre étendit sa main et reprit le fer.
8 When the king of Aram was waging war on Israel, he would make plans with his servants to attack a particular place.	8 Le roi d’Aram était en guerre avec Israël. Il tint conseil avec ses serviteurs et leur dit: “J’irai me mettre en embuscade à tel et tel endroit.”
9 But the man of God would send word to the king of Israel, "Be careful! Do not pass by this place, for Aram will attack there."	9 Mais l’homme de Dieu envoya dire au roi d’Israël: “Ne passe pas par cet endroit, car les Araméens vont y descendre.”
10 So the king of Israel would send word to the place which the man of God had indicated, and alert it; then they would be on guard. This happened several times.	10 Alors le roi d’Israël fit porter des ordres à l’endroit que l’homme de Dieu lui avait dit. Élisée l’avertissait ainsi, et pas seulement une fois ou deux, et le roi se tenait sur ses gardes.
11 Greatly disturbed over this, the king of Aram called together his officers. "Will you not tell me," he asked them, "who among us is for the king of Israel?"	11 Le roi d’Aram en fut très préoccupé; il appela ses serviteurs et leur dit: “Dites-moi donc lequel des nôtres est pour le roi d’Israël.”
12 "No one, my lord king," answered one of the officers. "The Israelite prophet Elisha can tell the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom."	12 Un de ses serviteurs répondit: “Personne, mon seigneur le roi, c’est Élisée, le prophète d’Israël, qui révèle au roi d’Israël même les paroles que tu prononces dans ta chambre à coucher.”
13 "Go, find out where he is," he said, "so that I may take him captive." Informed that Elisha was in Dothan,	13 Le roi leur dit: “Allez et voyez où il est, et je le ferai enlever.” On lui donna une information: “Il est à Dotan.”
14 he sent there a strong force with horses and chariots. They arrived by night and surrounded the city.	14 Le roi envoya donc là-bas des chevaux, des chars et une troupe nombreuse; ils arrivèrent de nuit pour encercler la ville.
15 Early the next morning, when the attendant of the man of God arose and went out, he saw the force with its horses and chariots surrounding the city. "Alas!" he said to Elisha. "What shall we do, my lord?"	15 Le serviteur de l’homme de Dieu se leva de bon matin; lorsqu’il sortit, une troupe entourait la ville avec des chevaux et des chars. Le garçon dit à Élisée: “Ah, mon seigneur! Qu’allons-nous faire?”
16 "Do not be afraid," Elisha answered. "Our side outnumbers theirs."	16 Il lui répondit: “Ne crains pas, car ceux qui sont avec nous sont plus nombreux que ceux qui sont avec eux.”
17 Then he prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes, that he may see." And the LORD opened the eyes of the servant, so that he saw the mountainside filled with horses and fiery chariots around Elisha.	17 Élisée se mit en prière: “Yahvé, ouvre ses yeux pour qu’il voie.” Et Yahvé ouvrit les yeux du jeune homme, il vit la montagne couverte de chevaux et de chars de feu tout autour d’Élisée.
18 When the Arameans came down to get him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, "Strike this people blind, I pray you." And in answer to the prophet's prayer the LORD struck them blind.	18 Les Araméens descendirent vers Élisée. Il fit cette prière à Yahvé: “Daigne frapper d’aveuglement cette troupe!” Et Yahvé les frappa d’aveuglement selon la parole d’Élisée.
19 Then Elisha said to them: "This is the wrong road, and this is the wrong city. Follow me! I will take you to the man you want." And he led them to Samaria.	19 Élisée leur dit: “Ce n’est pas ici le chemin et ce n’est pas ici la ville, suivez-moi et je vous conduirai vers l’homme que vous cherchez.” Et il les conduisit à Samarie.
20 When they entered Samaria, Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open their eyes that they may see." The LORD opened their eyes, and they saw that they were inside Samaria.	20 Lorsqu’ils furent entrés dans Samarie, Élisée dit: “Yahvé! Ouvre les yeux de ces hommes et qu’ils voient.” Yahvé ouvrit leurs yeux et ils virent qu’ils étaient au milieu de Samarie.
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he asked, "Shall I kill them, my father?"	21 Le roi d’Israël, en les voyant, dit à Élisée: “Dois-je les frapper, mon père?”
22 "You must not kill them," replied Elisha. "Do you slay those whom you have taken captive with your sword or bow? Serve them bread and water. Let them eat and drink, and then go back to their master."	22 Il répondit: “Ne les frappe pas. Frappe-t-on ceux qu’on a fait prisonniers par l’épée ou l’arc? Donne-leur plutôt du pain et de l’eau pour qu’ils mangent et qu’ils boivent; ils retourneront ensuite chez leur maître.”
23 The king spread a great feast for them. When they had eaten and drunk he sent them away, and they went back to their master. No more Aramean raiders came into the land of Israel.	23 Alors le roi leur fit servir un bon repas, ils mangèrent et ils burent. Puis il les renvoya et ils s’en retournèrent chez leur maître; à partir de ce moment-là, les bandes araméennes cessèrent leurs raids sur le territoire d’Israël.
24 After this, Ben-hadad, king of Aram, mustered his whole army and laid siege to Samaria.	24 Beaucoup plus tard, Ben-Hadad roi d’Aram rassembla toute son armée et monta pour assiéger Samarie.
25 Because of the siege the famine in Samaria was so severe that an ass's head sold for eighty pieces of silver, and a fourth of a kab of wild onion for five pieces of silver.	25 La famine fut grande à Samarie, la situation était telle qu’une tête d’âne valait 80 pièces d’argent et qu’une petite mesure de pois chiches en valait cinq.
26 One day, as the king of Israel was walking on the city wall, a woman cried out to him, "Help, my lord king!"	26 Au moment où le roi passait sur le rempart, une femme cria vers lui: “Sauve-moi, mon seigneur le roi!”
27 "No," he replied, "the LORD help you! Where could I find help for you: from the threshing floor or the winepress?"	27 Il répondit: “Si Yahvé ne te sauve pas, que puis-je faire? N’attends rien de moi pour manger ou pour boire?”
28 Then the king asked her, "What is your trouble?" She replied: "This woman said to me, 'Give up your son that we may eat him today; then tomorrow we will eat my son.'	28 Puis le roi lui dit: “Qu’y a-t-il?” Elle répondit: “La femme que voici m’avait dit: Donne ton fils pour que nous le mangions aujourd’hui; demain nous mangerons mon fils.
29 So we boiled my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, 'Now give up your son that we may eat him.' But she hid her son."	29 Nous avons donc fait cuire mon fils et nous l’avons mangé, mais lorsque le jour suivant je lui ai dit: ‘Donne ton fils pour que nous le mangions’, elle l’a caché.”
30 When the king heard the woman's words, he tore his garments. And as he was walking on the wall, the people saw that he was wearing sackcloth underneath, next to his skin.	30 En entendant les paroles de cette femme, le roi déchira ses vêtements, et comme il était sur le rempart, le peuple vit qu’en dessous de ses vêtements il portait un sac à même le corps.
31 "May God do thus and so to me," the king exclaimed, "if the head of Elisha, son of Shaphat, stays on him today!"	31 Le roi dit: “Que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore, si la tête d’Élisée fils de Chafat reste aujourd’hui sur ses épaules!”
32 Meanwhile, Elisha was sitting in his house in conference with the elders. The king had sent a man ahead before he himself should come to him. Elisha had said to the elders: "Do you know that this son of a murderer is sending someone to cut off my head? When the messenger comes, see that you close the door and hold it fast against him. His master's footsteps are echoing behind him."	32 Or Élisée était assis dans sa maison, et les anciens étaient assis autour de lui. Le roi envoya un de ses hommes, mais avant que le messager n’arrive, Élisée avait dit aux anciens: “Savez-vous que ce fils d’assassin envoie quelqu’un pour me couper la tête? Faites attention! Lorsque le messager viendra, fermez la porte et repoussez-le avec la porte. On entendra sûrement les pas de son maître juste derrière les siens.”
33 While Elisha was still speaking, the king came down to him and said, "This evil is from the LORD. Why should I trust in the LORD any longer?"	33 Élisée parlait encore avec eux lorsque le roi arriva chez lui: “Ce malheur vient de Yahvé, dit-il, que puis-je encore espérer de Yahvé?”
