NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
When King David was settled in his palace, and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side,1 Factum est autem cum sedisset rex in domo sua, et Dominus de disset ei requiem undique ab universis inimicis suis,
he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God dwells in a tent!"2 dixit ad Nathan prophetam: “ Videsne quod ego habitem in domo cedrina, et arca Dei posita sit in medio pellium? ”.
Nathan answered the king, "Go, do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you."3 Dixitque Nathan ad regem: “ Omne, quod est in corde tuo, vade, fac, quia Dominus tecum est ”.
But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:4 Factum est autem in nocte illa, et ecce sermo Domini ad Nathan dicens:
"Go, tell my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD: Should you build me a house to dwell in?5 “ Vade et loquere ad servum meum David: Haec dicit Dominus: Numquid tu aedificabis mihi domum ad habitandum?
I have not dwelt in a house from the day on which I led the Israelites out of Egypt to the present, but I have been going about in a tent under cloth.6 Numquam enim habitavi in domo ex die, qua eduxi filios Israel de terra Aegypti, usque in diem hanc, sed ambulabam in tabernaculo et in tentorio.
In all my wanderings everywhere among the Israelites, did I ever utter a word to any one of the judges whom I charged to tend my people Israel, to ask: Why have you not built me a house of cedar?'7 Per cuncta loca, quae transivi cum omnibus filiis Israel, numquid loquens locutus sum ad unum de iudicibus Israel, cui praecepi, ut pasceret populum meum Israel, dicens: Quare non aedificastis mihi domum cedrinam?
"Now then, speak thus to my servant David, 'The LORD of hosts has this to say: It was I who took you from the pasture and from the care of the flock to be commander of my people Israel.8 Et nunc haec dices servo meo David: Haec dicit Dominus exercituum: Ego tuli te de pascuis sequentem greges, ut esses dux super populum meum Israel,
I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.9 et fui tecum in omnibus, ubicumque ambulasti, et interfeci universos inimicos tuos a facie tua; fecique tibi nomen grande iuxta nomen magnorum, qui sunt in terra.
I will fix a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance. Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old,10 Et ponam locum populo meo Israel et plantabo eum, et habitabit in eo et non turbabitur amplius; nec addent filii iniquitatis ut affligant eum sicut prius
since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you.11 et ex die, qua constitui iudices super populum meum Israel, et requiem dabo tibi ab omnibus inimicis tuis. Praedicitque tibi Dominus quod domum faciat tibi Dominus.
And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm.12 Cumque completi fuerint dies tui, et dormieris cum patribus tuis, suscitabo semen tuum post te, quod egredietur de visceribus tuis; et firmabo regnum eius.
It is he who shall build a house for my name. And I will make his royal throne firm forever.13 Ipse aedificabit domum nomini meo, et stabiliam thronum regni eius usque in sempiternum.
I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. And if he does wrong, I will correct him with the rod of men and with human chastisements;14 Ego ero ei in patrem, et ipse erit mihi in filium; qui si inique aliquid gesserit, arguam eum in virga virorum et in plagis filiorum hominum.
but I will not withdraw my favor from him as I withdrew it from your predecessor Saul, whom I removed from my presence.15 Misericordiam autem meam non auferam ab eo, sicut abstuli a Saul, quem amovi a facie tua;
Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.'"16 et stabilis erit domus tua et regnum tuum usque in aeternum ante faciem meam, et thronus tuus erit firmus iugiter ”.
Nathan reported all these words and this entire vision to David.17 Secundum omnia verba haec et iuxta universam visionem istam sic locutus est Nathan ad David.
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, "Who am I, Lord GOD, and who are the members of my house, that you have brought me to this point?18 Ingressus est autem rex David et sedit coram Domino et dixit: “ Quis ego sum, Domine Deus, et quae domus mea, quia adduxisti me hucusque?
Yet even this you see as too little, Lord GOD; you have also spoken of the house of your servant for a long time to come: this too you have shown to man, Lord GOD!19 Sed et hoc parum visum est in conspectu tuo, Domine Deus, et locutus es etiam de domo servi tui in longinquum, et ista est lex hominis, Domine Deus!
What more can David say to you? You know your servant, Lord GOD!20 Quid ergo addere poterit adhuc David, ut loquatur ad te? Tu enim scis servum tuum, Domine Deus.
For your servant's sake and as you have had at heart, you have brought about this entire magnificent disclosure to your servant.21 Propter verbum tuum et secundum cor tuum fecisti omnia magnalia haec, ita ut nota faceres servo tuo.
And so-- "Great are you, Lord GOD! There is none like you and there is no God but you, just as we have heard it told.22 Idcirco magnus es, Domine Deus, quia non est similis tui; neque est Deus extra te, iuxta omnia, quae audivimus auribus nostris.
What other nation on earth is there like your people Israel, which God has led, redeeming it as his people; so that you have made yourself renowned by doing this magnificent deed, and by doing awe-inspiring things as you cleared nations and their gods out of the way of your people, which you redeemed for yourself from Egypt?23 Quae est autem ut populus tuus Israel una gens in terra, propter quam ivit Deus, ut redimeret eam sibi in populum et poneret sibi nomen faceretque eis magnalia et horribilia, ut eiceres a facie populi tui, quem redemisti tibi ex Aegypto, gentes et deos eorum?
You have established for yourself your people Israel as yours forever, and you, LORD, have become their God.24 Et firmasti tibi populum tuum Israel in populum sempiternum; et tu, Domine, factus es eis in Deum.
And now, LORD God, confirm for all time the prophecy you have made concerning your servant and his house, and do as you have promised.25 Nunc ergo, Domine Deus, verbum, quod locutus es super servum tuum et super domum eius, confirma in sempiternum et fac, sicut locutus es!
Your name will be forever great, when men say, 'The LORD of hosts is God of Israel,' and the house of your servant David stands firm before you.26 Et magnificetur nomen tuum usque in sempiternum, atque dicatur: “Dominus exercituum est Deus super Israel”. Et domus servi tui David erit stabilita coram te,
It is you, LORD of hosts, God of Israel, who said in a revelation to your servant, 'I will build a house for you.' Therefore your servant now finds the courage to make this prayer to you.27 quia tu, Domine exercituum, Deus Israel, revelasti aurem servi tui dicens: “Domum aedificabo tibi”. Propterea invenit servus tuus cor suum, ut oraret te oratione hac.
And now, Lord GOD, you are God and your words are truth; you have made this generous promise to your servant.28 Nunc ergo, Domine Deus, tu es Deus, et verba tua erunt vera; cum ergo locutus sis ad servum tuum bona haec,
Do, then, bless the house of your servant that it may be before you forever; for you, Lord GOD, have promised, and by your blessing the house of your servant shall be blessed forever."29 dignare igitur benedicere domui servi tui, ut sit in sempiternum coram te, quia tu, Domine Deus, locutus es, et benedictione tua benedicetur domus servi tui in sempiternum ”.
