1 ויסעו בני ישראל ויחנו בערבות מואב מעבר לירדן ירחו	1 The Israelites then set out and pitched their camp in the Plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan oppositeJericho.
2 וירא בלק בן צפור את כל אשר עשה ישראל לאמרי	2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,
3 ויגר מואב מפני העם מאד כי רב הוא ויקץ מואב מפני בני ישראל	3 and Moab was terrified of the people, because there were so many of them. Moab was afraid of theIsraelites;
4 ויאמר מואב אל זקני מדין עתה ילחכו הקהל את כל סביבתינו כלחך השור את ירק השדה ובלק בן צפור מלך למואב בעת ההוא	4 he said to the elders of Midian, 'This horde wil soon have cropped everything round us as closely asan ox crops grass in the countryside.' Now Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at the time.
5 וישלח מלאכים אל בלעם בן בעור פתורה אשר על הנהר ארץ בני עמו לקרא לו לאמר הנה עם יצא ממצרים הנה כסה את עין הארץ והוא ישב ממלי	5 He sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, at Pethor on the River, in the territory of theAmawites, saying, 'Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside; they have halted at myvery door.
6 ועתה לכה נא ארה לי את העם הזה כי עצום הוא ממני אולי אוכל נכה בו ואגרשנו מן הארץ כי ידעתי את אשר תברך מברך ואשר תאר יואר	6 I beg you come and curse this people for me, for they are stronger than I am. We may then be able todefeat them and drive them out of the country. For this I know: anyone you bless is blessed, anyone you curse isaccursed.'
7 וילכו זקני מואב וזקני מדין וקסמים בידם ויבאו אל בלעם וידברו אליו דברי בלק	7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian set out, taking the fee for the divination with them. Theyfound Balaam and gave him Balak's message.
8 ויאמר אליהם לינו פה הלילה והשבתי אתכם דבר כאשר ידבר יהוה אלי וישבו שרי מואב עם בלעם	8 He said to them, 'Stay the night here, and I wil answer as Yahweh directs me.' So the chiefs of Moabstayed with Balaam.
9 ויבא אלהים אל בלעם ויאמר מי האנשים האלה עמך	9 God came to Balaam and said, 'Who are these men staying with you?'
10 ויאמר בלעם אל האלהים בלק בן צפר מלך מואב שלח אלי	10 Balaam said to God, 'Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message,
11 הנה העם היצא ממצרים ויכס את עין הארץ עתה לכה קבה לי אתו אולי אוכל להלחם בו וגרשתיו	11 "Look, a people coming from Egypt has overrun the whole countryside. Come now and curse themfor me; I may then be able to defeat them and drive them out." '
12 ויאמר אלהים אל בלעם לא תלך עמהם לא תאר את העם כי ברוך הוא	12 God said to Balaam, 'You are not to go with them. You are not to curse the people, for they areblessed.'
13 ויקם בלעם בבקר ויאמר אל שרי בלק לכו אל ארצכם כי מאן יהוה לתתי להלך עמכם	13 In the morning Balaam got up and said to the chiefs sent by Balak, 'Go back to your country, forYahweh wil not let me go with you.'
14 ויקומו שרי מואב ויבאו אל בלק ויאמרו מאן בלעם הלך עמנו	14 So the chiefs of Moab got up, went back to Balak and said, 'Balaam refuses to come with us.'
15 ויסף עוד בלק שלח שרים רבים ונכבדים מאלה	15 And again Balak sent chiefs, more numerous and more renowned than the first.
16 ויבאו אל בלעם ויאמרו לו כה אמר בלק בן צפור אל נא תמנע מהלך אלי	16 They came to Balaam and said, 'A message from Balak son of Zippor, "Now do not refuse to cometo me.
17 כי כבד אכבדך מאד וכל אשר תאמר אלי אעשה ולכה נא קבה לי את העם הזה	17 I wil load you with honours and do whatever you say. I beg you come and curse this people for me."'
18 ויען בלעם ויאמר אל עבדי בלק אם יתן לי בלק מלא ביתו כסף וזהב לא אוכל לעבר את פי יהוה אלהי לעשות קטנה או גדולה	18 In reply, Balaam said to Balak's envoys, 'Even if Balak gave me his house ful of silver and gold, Icould not go against the order of Yahweh my God in anything, great or smal .
19 ועתה שבו נא בזה גם אתם הלילה ואדעה מה יסף יהוה דבר עמי	19 Now please stay the night here yourselves, and I wil learn what else Yahweh has to tel me.'
20 ויבא אלהים אל בלעם לילה ויאמר לו אם לקרא לך באו האנשים קום לך אתם ואך את הדבר אשר אדבר אליך אתו תעשה	20 God came to Balaam during the night and said to him, 'Have not these men come to summon you?Get up, go with them, but do only what I tel you to do.'
21 ויקם בלעם בבקר ויחבש את אתנו וילך עם שרי מואב	21 Balaam got up and saddled his donkey and set out with the chiefs of Moab.
22 ויחר אף אלהים כי הולך הוא ויתיצב מלאך יהוה בדרך לשטן לו והוא רכב על אתנו ושני נעריו עמו	22 His going kindled Yahweh's anger, and the angel of Yahweh took his stand on the road to bar hisway. Balaam was riding his donkey and his two servants were with him.
23 ותרא האתון את מלאך יהוה נצב בדרך וחרבו שלופה בידו ותט האתון מן הדרך ותלך בשדה ויך בלעם את האתון להטתה הדרך	23 Now the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, andshe turned off the road into the open country. Balaam then struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road.
24 ויעמד מלאך יהוה במשעול הכרמים גדר מזה וגדר מזה	24 The angel of Yahweh then went and stood on a narrow path among the vineyards, with a wall to theright and a wal to the left.
25 ותרא האתון את מלאך יהוה ותלחץ אל הקיר ותלחץ את רגל בלעם אל הקיר ויסף להכתה	25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and scraped against the wal , scraping Balaam's foot againstit, so he struck her again.
26 ויוסף מלאך יהוה עבור ויעמד במקום צר אשר אין דרך לנטות ימין ושמאול	26 The angel of Yahweh then moved and stood in a place so narrow that there was no room to passeither to right or left.
27 ותרא האתון את מלאך יהוה ותרבץ תחת בלעם ויחר אף בלעם ויך את האתון במקל	27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam. Balaam flew into a rageand struck the donkey with his stick.
28 ויפתח יהוה את פי האתון ותאמר לבלעם מה עשיתי לך כי הכיתני זה שלש רגלים	28 Yahweh then gave the donkey the power to talk, and she said to Balaam, 'What harm have I doneyou, for you to strike me three times like this?'
29 ויאמר בלעם לאתון כי התעללת בי לו יש חרב בידי כי עתה הרגתיך	29 Balaam answered the donkey, 'Because you have been making a fool of me! If I had been carryinga sword, I should have killed you by now.'
30 ותאמר האתון אל בלעם הלוא אנכי אתנך אשר רכבת עלי מעודך עד היום הזה ההסכן הסכנתי לעשות לך כה ויאמר לא	30 The donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey, and have I not been your mount all your life?Have I ever behaved like this with you before?' 'No,' he replied.
31 ויגל יהוה את עיני בלעם וירא את מלאך יהוה נצב בדרך וחרבו שלפה בידו ויקד וישתחו לאפיו	31 Yahweh then opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with adrawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head and threw himself on his face.
32 ויאמר אליו מלאך יהוה על מה הכית את אתנך זה שלוש רגלים הנה אנכי יצאתי לשטן כי ירט הדרך לנגדי	32 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, 'Why did you strike your donkey three times like that? I myselfhad come to bar your way; while I am here your road is blocked.
33 ותראני האתון ותט לפני זה שלש רגלים אולי נטתה מפני כי עתה גם אתכה הרגתי ואותה החייתי	33 The donkey saw me and turned aside because of me three times. You are lucky she did turn aside,or I should have kil ed you by now, though I would have spared her.'
34 ויאמר בלעם אל מלאך יהוה חטאתי כי לא ידעתי כי אתה נצב לקראתי בדרך ועתה אם רע בעיניך אשובה לי	34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, 'I have sinned. I did not know you were standing in the road tostop me. But if what I am doing displeases you, I wil go home again.'
35 ויאמר מלאך יהוה אל בלעם לך עם האנשים ואפס את הדבר אשר אדבר אליך אתו תדבר וילך בלעם עם שרי בלק	35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, 'Go with these men, but say only what I tel you to say.' SoBalaam went on with the chiefs sent by Balak.
36 וישמע בלק כי בא בלעם ויצא לקראתו אל עיר מואב אשר על גבול ארנן אשר בקצה הגבול	36 Balak learned that Balaam was coming and went out to meet him, in the direction of Ar in Moab, atthe Arnon frontier on the country's furthest boundary.
37 ויאמר בלק אל בלעם הלא שלח שלחתי אליך לקרא לך למה לא הלכת אלי האמנם לא אוכל כבדך	37 Balak said to Balaam, 'Did I not send messengers to summon you? Why did you not come to me?Did you think, perhaps, I could confer no honours on you?'
38 ויאמר בלעם אל בלק הנה באתי אליך עתה היכול אוכל דבר מאומה הדבר אשר ישים אלהים בפי אתו אדבר	38 Balaam said to Balak, 'I have come to you after al . I suppose you know I cannot say anything on myown? The words God puts into my mouth are what I shall say.'
39 וילך בלעם עם בלק ויבאו קרית חצות	39 Balaam set out with Balak. They came to Kiriath-Huzoth.
40 ויזבח בלק בקר וצאן וישלח לבלעם ולשרים אשר אתו	40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and offered portions to Balaam and the chiefs who were with him.
41 ויהי בבקר ויקח בלק את בלעם ויעלהו במות בעל וירא משם קצה העם	41 Next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-Baal, from where he could see theedge of the camp.
