LXXNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
ων επτα ετων ιωας εν τω βασιλευσαι αυτον και τεσσαρακοντα ετη εβασιλευσεν εν ιερουσαλημ και ονομα τη μητρι αυτου σαβια εκ βηρσαβεε1 Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Zibiah, was from Beer-sheba.
και εποιησεν ιωας το ευθες ενωπιον κυριου πασας τας ημερας ιωδαε του ιερεως2 Joash did what was pleasing to the LORD as long as Jehoiada the priest lived.
και ελαβεν αυτω ιωδαε γυναικας δυο και εγεννησεν υιους και θυγατερας3 Jehoiada provided him with two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters.
και εγενετο μετα ταυτα και εγενετο επι καρδιαν ιωας επισκευασαι τον οικον κυριου4 After some time, Joash decided to restore the LORD'S temple.
και συνηγαγεν τους ιερεις και τους λευιτας και ειπεν αυτοις εξελθατε εις τας πολεις ιουδα και συναγαγετε απο παντος ισραηλ αργυριον κατισχυσαι τον οικον κυριου ενιαυτον κατ' ενιαυτον και σπευσατε λαλησαι και ουκ εσπευσαν οι λευιται5 He called together the priests and Levites and said to them: "Go out to all the cities of Judah and collect money from all Israel that you may repair the house of your God over the years. You must hasten this affair." But the Levites did not hasten.
και εκαλεσεν ο βασιλευς ιωας τον ιωδαε τον αρχοντα και ειπεν αυτω δια τι ουκ επεσκεψω περι των λευιτων του εισενεγκαι απο ιουδα και ιερουσαλημ το κεκριμενον υπο μωυση ανθρωπου του θεου οτε εξεκκλησιασεν τον ισραηλ εις την σκηνην του μαρτυριου6 Then the king summoned Jehoiada, who was in charge, and said to him: "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax levied by Moses, the servant of the LORD, and by the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?"
οτι γοθολια ην η ανομος και οι υιοι αυτης κατεσπασαν τον οικον του θεου και γαρ τα αγια οικου κυριου εποιησαν ταις βααλιμ7 For the wicked Athaliah and her sons had damaged the house of God and had even turned over to the Baals the dedicated resources of the LORD'S temple.
και ειπεν ο βασιλευς γενηθητω γλωσσοκομον και τεθητω εν πυλη οικου κυριου εξω8 At the king's command, therefore, they made a chest, which they put outside the gate of the LORD'S temple.
και κηρυξατωσαν εν ιουδα και εν ιερουσαλημ εισενεγκαι κυριω καθως ειπεν μωυσης παις του θεου επι τον ισραηλ εν τη ερημω9 They had it proclaimed throughout Judah and Jerusalem that the tax which Moses, the servant of God, had imposed on Israel in the desert should be brought to the LORD.
και εδωκαν παντες αρχοντες και πας ο λαος και εισεφερον και ενεβαλλον εις το γλωσσοκομον εως ου επληρωθη10 All the princes and the people rejoiced; they brought what was asked and cast it into the chest until it was filled.
και εγενετο ως εισεφερον το γλωσσοκομον προς τους προστατας του βασιλεως δια χειρος των λευιτων και ως ειδον οτι επλεονασεν το αργυριον και ηλθεν ο γραμματευς του βασιλεως και ο προστατης του ιερεως του μεγαλου και εξεκενωσαν το γλωσσοκομον και κατεστησαν εις τον τοπον αυτου ουτως εποιουν ημεραν εξ ημερας και συνηγαγον αργυριον πολυ11 Whenever the chest was brought to the royal officials by the Levites and they saw that it contained much money, the royal scribe and an overseer for the high priest came, emptied the chest, then took it back and returned it to its place. This they did day after day until they had collected a large sum of money.
και εδωκεν αυτο ο βασιλευς και ιωδαε ο ιερευς τοις ποιουσιν τα εργα εις την εργασιαν οικου κυριου και εμισθουντο λατομους και τεκτονας επισκευασαι τον οικον κυριου και χαλκεις σιδηρου και χαλκου επισκευασαι τον οικον κυριου12 Then the king and Jehoiada gave it to the workmen in charge of the labor on the LORD'S temple, who hired masons and carpenters to restore the temple, and also iron-and bronze-smiths to repair it.
και εποιουν οι ποιουντες τα εργα και ανεβη μηκος των εργων εν χερσιν αυτων και ανεστησαν τον οικον κυριου επι την στασιν αυτου και ενισχυσαν13 The workmen labored, and the task of restoration progressed under their hands. They restored the house of God according to its original form, and reinforced it.
και ως συνετελεσαν ηνεγκαν προς τον βασιλεα και προς ιωδαε το καταλοιπον του αργυριου και εποιησαν σκευη εις οικον κυριου σκευη λειτουργικα ολοκαυτωματων και θυισκας χρυσας και αργυρας και ανηνεγκαν ολοκαυτωσεις εν οικω κυριου δια παντος πασας τας ημερας ιωδαε14 After they had finished, they brought the rest of the money to the king and to Jehoiada, who had it made into utensils for the LORD'S temple, utensils for the service and the holocausts, and basins and other gold and silver utensils. They offered holocausts in the LORD'S temple continually throughout the lifetime of Jehoiada.
και εγηρασεν ιωδαε πληρης ημερων και ετελευτησεν ων εκατον και τριακοντα ετων εν τω τελευταν αυτον15 Jehoiada lived to a ripe old age; he was a hundred and thirty years old when he died.
και εθαψαν αυτον εν πολει δαυιδ μετα των βασιλεων οτι εποιησεν αγαθωσυνην μετα ισραηλ και μετα του θεου και του οικου αυτου16 He was buried in the City of David with the kings, because he had done good in Israel, in particular with respect to God and his temple.
και εγενετο μετα την τελευτην ιωδαε εισηλθον οι αρχοντες ιουδα και προσεκυνησαν τον βασιλεα τοτε επηκουσεν αυτοις ο βασιλευς17 After the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and the king then listened to them.
και εγκατελιπον τον κυριον θεον των πατερων αυτων και εδουλευον ταις ασταρταις και τοις ειδωλοις και εγενετο οργη επι ιουδαν και επι ιερουσαλημ εν τη ημερα ταυτη18 They forsook the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and began to serve the sacred poles and the idols; and because of this crime of theirs, wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem.
και απεστειλεν προς αυτους προφητας επιστρεψαι προς κυριον και ουκ ηκουσαν και διεμαρτυραντο αυτοις και ουκ ηκουσαν19 Although prophets were sent to them to convert them to the LORD, the people would not listen to their warnings.
και πνευμα θεου ενεδυσεν τον αζαριαν τον του ιωδαε τον ιερεα και ανεστη επανω του λαου και ειπεν ταδε λεγει κυριος τι παραπορευεσθε τας εντολας κυριου και ουκ ευοδωθησεσθε οτι εγκατελιπετε τον κυριον και εγκαταλειψει υμας20 Then the spirit of God possessed Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He took his stand above the people and said to them: "God says, 'Why are you transgressing the LORD'S commands, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have abandoned the LORD, he has abandoned you.'"
και επεθεντο αυτω και ελιθοβολησαν αυτον δι' εντολης ιωας του βασιλεως εν αυλη οικου κυριου21 But they conspired against him, and at the king's order they stoned him to death in the court of the LORD'S temple.
και ουκ εμνησθη ιωας του ελεους ου εποιησεν μετ' αυτου ιωδαε ο πατηρ αυτου και εθανατωσεν τον υιον αυτου και ως απεθνησκεν ειπεν ιδοι κυριος και κρινατω22 Thus King Joash was unmindful of the devotion shown him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, and slew his son. And as he was dying, he said, "May the LORD see and avenge."
και εγενετο μετα την συντελειαν του ενιαυτου ανεβη επ' αυτον δυναμις συριας και ηλθεν επι ιουδαν και επι ιερουσαλημ και κατεφθειραν παντας τους αρχοντας του λαου εν τω λαω και παντα τα σκυλα αυτων απεστειλαν τω βασιλει δαμασκου23 At the turn of the year a force of Arameans came up against Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem, did away with all the princes of the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus.
οτι εν ολιγοις ανδρασιν παρεγενετο δυναμις συριας και ο θεος παρεδωκεν εις τας χειρας αυτων δυναμιν πολλην σφοδρα οτι εγκατελιπον κυριον θεον των πατερων αυτων και μετα ιωας εποιησεν κριματα24 Though the Aramean force came with few men, the LORD surrendered a very large force into their power, because Judah had abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers. So punishment was meted out to Joash.
και μετα το απελθειν αυτους απ' αυτου εν τω εγκαταλιπειν αυτον εν μαλακιαις μεγαλαις και επεθεντο αυτω οι παιδες αυτου εν αιμασιν υιου ιωδαε του ιερεως και εθανατωσαν αυτον επι της κλινης αυτου και απεθανεν και εθαψαν αυτον εν πολει δαυιδ και ουκ εθαψαν αυτον εν τω ταφω των βασιλεων25 After the Arameans had departed from him, leaving him in grievous suffering, his servants conspired against him because of the murder of the son of Jehoiada the priest. They killed him on his sickbed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
και οι επιθεμενοι επ' αυτον ζαβεδ ο του σαμαθ ο αμμανιτης και ιωζαβεδ ο του σομαρωθ ο μωαβιτης26 These conspired against him: Zabad, son of Shimeath from Ammon, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith from Moab.
και οι υιοι αυτου παντες και προσηλθον αυτω οι πεντε και τα λοιπα ιδου γεγραμμενα επι την γραφην των βασιλεων και εβασιλευσεν αμασιας υιος αυτου αντ' αυτου27 Of his sons, and the great tribute imposed on him, and of his rebuilding of the house of God, there is a written account in the midrash of the book of the kings. His son Amaziah succeeded him as king.
