1 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,	1 Saül était roi et il gouvernait Israël.
2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.	2 Il se choisit 3 000 hommes parmi les Israélites; 2 000 étaient avec lui à Mikmas ainsi que dans la montagne de Béthel, et il confia les 1 000 qui restaient à Jonathan, à Guibéa de Benjamin. Quant aux autres, Saül les renvoya chacun sous sa tente.
3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.	3 Jonathan tua le chef des Philistins qui se trouvait à Guibéa et les Philistins apprirent la nouvelle. Saül fit alors sonner du cor dans tout le pays pour dire: “Que les Hébreux le sachent!”
4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.	4 Et tout Israël sut la nouvelle: “Saül a tué le chef des Philistins, Israël s’est rendu odieux aux Philistins.” Le peuple aussitôt se rassembla derrière Saül à Guilgal.
5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven.	5 Les Philistins se regroupèrent pour combattre Israël. Ils avaient 3 000 chars et 6 000 cavaliers, leur peuple était nombreux comme le sable sur le rivage de la mer. Il montèrent camper à Mikmas, à l’est de Beth-Aven.
6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.	6 Les Israélites se virent en péril à mesure qu’ils étaient refoulés; ils se cachèrent dans les cavernes, les broussailles, les rochers, les grottes et les citernes.
7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.	7 Certains Hébreux traversèrent le Jourdain vers Gad et le pays de Galaad. Saül attendait encore à Guilgal, mais tout le peuple tremblait derrière lui.
8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.	8 Saül attendit sept jours selon le temps fixé par Samuel, Samuel ne venait toujours pas à Guilgal et les gens commençaient à se disperser.
9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.	9 Alors Saül dit: “Amenez-moi l’holocauste et les sacrifices de communion.” Et il offrit l’holocauste.
10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.	10 Il achevait à peine d’offrir l’holocauste lorsque Samuel arriva. Saül vint à sa rencontre pour le saluer.
11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;	11 Samuel lui dit: “Qu’as-tu fait?” Et Saül lui répondit: “J’ai vu que les gens commençaient à se disperser car tu n’arrivais pas à la date prévue, et déjà les Philistins se rassemblaient à Mikmas.
12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.	12 Alors je me suis dit: Les Philistins vont descendre sur moi à Guilgal sans que j’aie même eu le temps d’implorer Yahvé. C’est pourquoi j’ai pris sur moi d’offrir l’holocauste.”
13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.	13 Samuel dit à Saül: “Tu t’es comporté comme un insensé: si tu avais observé le commandement que Yahvé ton Dieu t’avait donné, il aurait assuré ta royauté sur Israël pour toujours.
14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.	14 Maintenant ta royauté ne tiendra pas: Yahvé a déjà cherché un homme selon son cœur pour l’établir comme chef sur son peuple, parce que tu n’as pas observé les commandements de Yahvé.”
15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.	15 Samuel s’en alla donc, il quitta Guilgal et alla son chemin. Le reste du peuple monta derrière Saül à la rencontre des ennemis. De Guilgal il monta à Guibéa de Benjamin où Saül passa en revue les gens qui se trouvaient avec lui, ils étaient environ 600.
16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.	16 Saül, son fils Jonathan et les gens qui étaient avec eux, restèrent à Guibéa de Benjamin tandis que les Philistins campaient à Mikmas.
17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:	17 Une troupe sortit du camp des Philistins, divisée en trois corps. Un corps se dirigea sur la route d’Ofra, au pays de Choual,
18 And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.	18 un autre corps prit la direction de Beth-Horon et le troisième la direction de la colline qui domine la vallée des Hyènes, vers le désert.
19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:	19 En ce temps-là il n’y avait pas de forgeron dans tout le pays d’Israël, car les Philistins s’étaient dit: “Il ne faut pas que les Hébreux se fabriquent des épées ou des lances.”
20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.	20 C’est pour cela que tous les Israélites descendaient chez les Philistins pour affûter leur soc, leur hache, leur faux ou leur binette.
21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.	21 Pour aiguiser les socs et les lames, on payait deux tiers de sicle; pour affûter les haches ou redresser les aiguillons, on payait un tiers de sicle.
22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.	22 C’est ainsi qu’au jour du combat aucun des hommes qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathan n’avait en main lance ou épée. Seuls Saül et Jonathan avaient des armes.
23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.	23 Un poste de Philistins était parti pour la passe de Mikmas.
