KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.1 At that time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.
Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.2 So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, "It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.
Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.3 Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task,
But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.4 whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:5 The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.6 They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.
And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.7 The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.
And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.8 Now Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people.
Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.9 Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen,
And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.10 but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.
Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.11 Then they instigated some men to say, "We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God."
And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,12 They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin.
And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:13 They presented false witnesses who testified, "This man never stops saying things against (this) holy place and the law.
For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.14 For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us."
And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.15 All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
