1 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:	1 Agrippa dit alors à Paul: "Tu es invité à présenter ta défense.” Paul étendit la main et commença ainsi sa défense:
2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:	2 "Roi Agrippa, je crois que j’ai bien de la chance de pouvoir m’expliquer aujourd’hui devant toi sur toutes ces accusations des Juifs.
3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.	3 Car tu es très au fait de toutes les pratiques, comme des discussions propres aux Juifs. Je te prie donc de bien vouloir m’écouter.
4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;	4 “Tous les Juifs savent ce qu’a été ma vie dès ma jeunesse, aussi bien dans la communauté juive qu’à Jérusalem.
5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.	5 Ils m’ont toujours vu de près et ils pourraient dire, s’ils le voulaient, que j’ai vécu en Pharisien, dans la secte la plus stricte de notre religion.
6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:	6 Et si aujourd’hui je suis ici en accusé, c’est bien parce que j’espère en la promesse faite par Dieu à nos pères;
7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.	7 d’ailleurs, le culte perpétuel que nos douze tribus rendent à Dieu, de jour et de nuit, ne vise à rien d’autre qu’à obtenir cette promesse. C’est pour cette espérance que je suis accusé par les Juifs, roi Agrippa.
8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?	8 Pourquoi refusez-vous de croire que Dieu ressuscite les morts?
9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.	9 “Pour ma part, j’avais pris le parti de m’opposer par tous les moyens au Nom de Jésus de Nazareth.
10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.	10 Je l’ai fait à Jérusalem même. J’ai fait mettre en prison un bon nombre des croyants après que les grands prêtres m’en avaient donné le pouvoir. Et quand on les mettait à mort, je donnais mon approbation.
11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.	11 Je faisais le tour des synagogues et je multipliais les mesures de répression pour les obliger à renier leur foi. J’étais tellement enragé contre eux que je les poursuivais jusque dans les villes hors des frontières.
12 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,	12 “C’est ainsi que je suis allé à Damas avec l’autorisation et même le mandat des grands prêtres.
13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.	13 Sur le chemin, ô roi, vers l’heure de midi, j’ai vu une lumière qui venait du ciel, plus brillante que le soleil. Elle m’a ébloui, de même que mes compagnons de route;
14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.	14 nous sommes tous tombés à terre et j’ai entendu une voix qui me disait en dialecte hébreu: ‘Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? Tu te fais mal en résistant.’
15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.	15 “J’ai dit: ‘Qui es-tu, Seigneur?’ Et le Seigneur m’a répondu: ‘Je suis Jésus que tu persécutes.
16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;	16 Relève-toi donc, tiens-toi sur tes pieds. Si je me suis montré à toi, c’est pour faire de toi le serviteur et le témoin de ce que tu as déjà vu de moi, et de ce que je te ferai voir encore.
17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,	17 Je te délivrerai de ton peuple aussi bien que des nations vers lesquelles je t’enverrai.
18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.	18 Tu leur ouvriras les yeux pour qu’ils se retournent des ténèbres vers la lumière, et passent du pouvoir de Satan à Dieu. Qu’ils croient en moi: ils recevront le pardon des péchés ainsi que l’héritage parmi les saints.’
19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:	19 “Cette vision céleste, roi Agrippa, je n’ai pas voulu m’y soustraire.
20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.	20 J’ai prêché à Damas pour commencer, à Jérusalem ensuite et dans tout le pays de Judée, puis dans les nations païennes. Je parlais de se convertir et de se retourner vers Dieu, faisant désormais des œuvres dignes d’une vraie conversion.
21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.	21 “Voilà pourquoi les Juifs m’ont arrêté dans le Temple et ont essayé de me tuer.
22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:	22 Mais, avec la protection de Dieu, jusqu’à ce jour j’ai continué de donner mon témoignage aux petits comme aux grands. À aucun moment je ne sors de ce que les prophètes et Moïse lui-même ont annoncé:
23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.	23 le Messie devait souffrir, il serait le premier à ressusciter d’entre les morts, et il proclamerait la lumière, aussi bien pour son peuple que pour les nations étrangères.”
24 And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.	24 Paul en était là de sa défense lorsque Festus l’interpella d’une voix forte: "Mais tu es fou, Paul, tu as trop étudié et tu perds la raison!”
25 But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.	25 "Je ne suis pas fou, excellent Festus, répondit Paul, je dis des choses vraies et qui ont beaucoup de sens.
26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.	26 Si je parle devant le roi avec une telle assurance, c’est parce qu’il est bien au courant de ces choses; je suis persuadé que rien ne lui en échappe, d’ailleurs tout cela ne s’est pas passé dans un recoin.
27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.	27 Crois-tu aux prophètes, roi Agrippa? Je sais que tu crois.”
28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.	28 Agrippa dit à Paul: "Un petit peu encore et tu penses m’avoir fait chrétien!”
29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.	29 Paul répondit: "Plaise à Dieu qu’avec un petit peu ou avec beaucoup, non seulement toi, mais vous tous qui m’entendez aujourd’hui, vous en arriviez où j’en suis, sauf pour ces chaînes.”
30 And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:	30 Après cela le roi se leva ainsi que le gouverneur et Bérénice et toute l’assistance.
31 And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.	31 En s’éloignant ils en reparlaient: "Ce prisonnier, disaient-ils, n’est pas un homme à faire des crimes qui méritent la mort.”
32 Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.	32 Agrippa dit à Festus: "S’il n’en avait pas appelé à César, on pouvait le mettre en liberté.”
