KING JAMES BIBLESAGRADA BIBLIA
Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.1 Irmãos e pais, ouvi o que vos tenho a dizer em minha defesa.
(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)2 Quando ouviram que lhes falava em língua hebraica, escutaram-no com a maior atenção.
I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.3 Continuou ele: Eu sou judeu, nasci em Tarso da Cilícia, mas criei-me nesta cidade, instruí-me aos pés de Gamaliel, em toda a observância da lei de nossos pais, partidário entusiasta da causa de Deus como todos vós também o sois no dia de hoje.
And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.4 Eu persegui de morte essa doutrina, prendendo e metendo em cárceres homens e mulheres.
As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.5 O sumo sacerdote e todo o conselho dos anciãos me são testemunhas. E foi deles que também recebi cartas para os irmãos de Damasco, para onde me dirigi, com o fim de prender os que lá se achassem e trazê-los a Jerusalém, para que fossem castigados.
And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.6 Ora, estando eu a caminho, e aproximando-me de Damasco, pelo meio-dia, de repente me cercou uma forte luz do céu.
And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?7 Caí por terra e ouvi uma voz que me dizia: Saulo, Saulo, por que me persegues?
And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.8 Eu repliquei: Quem és tu, Senhor? A voz me disse: Eu sou Jesus de Nazaré, a quem tu persegues.
And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.9 Os meus companheiros viram a luz, mas não ouviram a voz de quem falava.
And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.10 Então eu disse: Senhor, que devo fazer? E o Senhor me respondeu: Levanta-te, vai a Damasco e lá te será dito tudo o que deves fazer.
And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.11 Como eu não pudesse ver por causa da intensidade daquela luz, guiado pela mão dos meus companheiros, cheguei a Damasco.
And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,12 Um certo Ananias, homem piedoso e observador da lei, muito bem conceituado entre todos os judeus daquela cidade,
Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.13 veio ter comigo e disse-me: Irmão Saulo, recobra a tua vista. Naquela mesma hora pude enxergá-lo.
And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.14 Continuou ele: O Deus de nossos pais te predestinou para que conhecesses a sua vontade, visses o Justo e ouvisses a palavra da sua boca,
For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.15 pois lhe serás, diante de todos os homens, testemunha das coisas que tens visto e ouvido.
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.16 E agora, por que tardas? Levanta-te. Recebe o batismo e purifica-te dos teus pecados, invocando o seu nome.
And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;17 Voltei para Jerusalém e, orando no templo, fui arrebatado em êxtase.
And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.18 E vi Jesus que me dizia: Apressa-te e sai logo de Jerusalém, porque não receberão o teu testemunho a meu respeito.
And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:19 Eu repliquei: Senhor, eles sabem que eu encarcerava e açoitava com varas nas sinagogas os que crêem em ti.
And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.20 E quando se derramou o sangue de Estêvão, tua testemunha, eu estava presente, consentia nisso e guardava os mantos dos que o matavam.
And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.21 Mas ele me respondeu: Vai, porque eu te enviarei para longe, às nações...
And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.22 Haviam-no escutado até essa palavra. Então levantaram a voz: Tira do mundo esse homem! Não é digno de viver!
And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,23 Como vociferassem, arrojassem de si as vestes e lançassem pó ao ar,
The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.24 o tribuno mandou recolhê-lo à cidadela, açoitá-lo e submetê-lo a torturas, para saber por que causa clamavam assim contra ele.
And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?25 Quando o iam amarrando com a correia, Paulo perguntou a um centurião que estava presente: É permitido açoitar um cidadão romano que nem sequer foi julgado?
When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.26 Ao ouvir isso, o centurião foi ter com o tribuno e avisou-o: Que vais fazer? Este homem é cidadão romano.
Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.27 Veio o tribuno e perguntou-lhe: Dize-me, és romano? Sim, respondeu-lhe.
And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.28 O tribuno replicou: Eu adquiri este direito de cidadão por grande soma de dinheiro. Paulo respondeu: Pois eu o sou de nascimento.
Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.29 Apartaram-se então dele os que iam torturá-lo. O tribuno alarmou-se porque o mandara acorrentar, sendo ele um cidadão romano.
On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.30 No dia seguinte, querendo saber com mais exatidão de que os judeus o acusavam, soltou-o e ordenou que se reunissem os sumos sacerdotes e todo o Grande Conselho. Trouxe Paulo e o mandou comparecer diante deles.
