1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.	1 Nous avons donc fait demi-tour et nous sommes repartis pour le désert, par la route de la Mer des Joncs, comme Yahvé me l’avait ordonné. Pendant de longs jours nous avons contourné la montagne de Séïr.
2 And the LORD spake unto me, saying,	2 C’est alors que Yahvé me dit:
3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.	3 “Vous avez suffisamment tourné autour de cette montagne, repartez vers le nord.
4 And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:	4 Tu donneras cet ordre au peuple: Vous allez arriver à la frontière de vos frères, les fils d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séïr. Ils auront peur de vous, mais faites bien attention:
5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.	5 ne les attaquez pas, car je ne vous donnerai rien de leur pays, pas même la surface de la plante de vos pieds. Car j’ai donné à Ésaü le mont Séïr, il est à lui.
6 Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.	6 Vous leur achèterez donc la nourriture que vous mangerez; vous paierez même l’eau que vous boirez.
7 For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.	7 Car Yahvé ton Dieu t’a béni dans tout ce que tu as entrepris, il avait prévu ta marche dans ce grand désert; voilà quarante ans que Yahvé ton Dieu est avec toi, et tu n’as manqué de rien.”
8 And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.	8 Nous sommes donc passés à l’écart de nos frères, les fils d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séïr. Nous nous sommes détournés de la route de la Araba, d’Élat et d’Ézyon-Guéber, nous avons tourné et nous sommes passés par la route du désert de Moab.
9 And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.	9 Yahvé me dit alors: “N’attaque pas Moab, ne lui livre pas combat, car je ne te donnerai rien de son pays: j’ai donné Ar aux fils de Lot, il leur appartient.”
10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;	10 (Autrefois ce pays était celui des Émim, peuple grand et nombreux, de haute taille comme les Anakim.
11 Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims.	11 On les comptait parmi les Réphaïm, ainsi que les Anakim, mais les Moabites les appelaient les Émim.
12 The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.	12 En Séïr habitaient autrefois les Horites, mais les fils d’Ésaü les avaient dépossédés. Ils les avaient tués et s’étaient installés à leur place, comme Israël allait le faire pour le pays que Yahvé lui donnait en possession.)
13 Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.	13 “Maintenant donc, traversez le torrent de Zéred.” Nous l’avons traversé.
14 And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.	14 De Qadesh-Barné à la traversée du torrent de Zéred, nous avons marché 38 ans, le temps que disparaisse du milieu du camp toute la génération des hommes de guerre, comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné.
15 For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.	15 La main de Yahvé se chargea de les faire disparaître du milieu du camp.
16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,	16 Après leur disparition du milieu du peuple,
17 That the LORD spake unto me, saying,	17 Yahvé me dit:
18 Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:	18 “Aujourd’hui tu vas passer au-delà d’Ar sur la frontière de Moab.
19 And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.	19 Tu te trouveras face à face avec les Ammonites, mais ne les attaque pas, ne leur livre pas combat, car je ne te donnerai rien du pays des Ammonites: je l’ai donné aux fils de Lot, il est à eux.
20 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;	20 (Ce pays était considéré comme celui des Réphaïm. Les Réphaïm l’habitaient autrefois et les Ammonites les appelaient Zamzoummim.
21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:	21 C’était un peuple grand et nombreux, de haute taille comme les Anakim. Mais Yahvé les avait exterminés devant les Ammonites qui les dépouillèrent et s’installèrent à leur place.
22 As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:	22 Il les avait traités de la même façon que les Horites, qui furent exterminés en Séïr par les fils d’Ésaü. Ainsi les Ammonites ont habité à la place des Réphaïm jusqu’à ce jour.
23 And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)	23 En ce temps-là les Avvites aussi habitaient des camps en allant vers Gaza, mais les Kaftorim venus de Kaftor les exterminèrent et s’installèrent à leur place.)
24 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.	24 “Pars maintenant et traverse le torrent d’Arnon. Regarde! J’ai livré entre tes mains Sihon roi de Heshbon, l’Amorite, ainsi que son pays: commence la conquête, engage le combat.
25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.	25 À partir d’aujourd’hui je vais répandre la peur devant toi, et tous les peuples sous les cieux seront saisis de crainte devant toi. Ceux qui entendront parler de toi, trembleront et frissonneront de frayeur à cause de toi.”
26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,	26 Du désert de Kédémot, j’ai fait porter ces paroles de paix à Sihon, roi de Heshbon:
27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.	27 “Je dois traverser ton pays, j’irai par la grand-route, je ne m’écarterai ni à droite ni à gauche.
28 Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;	28 Tu me vendras à prix d’argent la nourriture que je mangerai; tu me vendras même l’eau que je boirai. Laisse-moi seulement traverser à pied.
29 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.	29 Agis envers moi comme l’ont fait les fils d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séïr et les Moabites qui habitent à Ar, jusqu’au jour où je traverserai le Jourdain en direction du pays que Yahvé notre Dieu nous donne.”
30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.	30 Mais Sihon, roi de Heshbon, refusa de nous laisser passer sur ses terres. Yahvé votre Dieu avait endurci son esprit et son cœur, pour le livrer entre vos mains ce jour-là.
31 And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.	31 Yahvé me dit alors: “Regarde! J’ai commencé à livrer Sihon et son pays entre tes mains. Ta première conquête sera celle de son pays.”
32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.	32 Sihon sortit à notre rencontre à Yahas pour combattre avec tout son peuple,
33 And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.	33 et Yahvé notre Dieu le livra entre nos mains. Nous l’avons écrasé ainsi que ses fils et tout son peuple.
34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:	34 À ce moment-là nous avons pris toutes ses villes et nous avons voué à l’anathème chacune de ces villes avec les hommes, les femmes et les petits-enfants. Nous n’avons laissé aucun survivant.
35 Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.	35 Nous avons seulement gardé comme butin le bétail et les dépouilles des villes conquises.
36 From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:	36 Depuis Aroër qui se trouve sur le versant de l’Arnon, et la ville qui est dans le torrent jusqu’à Galaad, aucune ville ne nous a échappé: Yahvé notre Dieu a tout livré entre nos mains.
37 Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.	37 Cependant, comme Yahvé notre Dieu nous avait interdit le pays des Ammonites, le versant du torrent du Yabok et les villes de la montagne, nous ne nous en sommes pas approchés.
