1 Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.	1 Les filles de Séloféhad vinrent alors se présenter. Séloféhad était fils de Héfer, fils de Galaad, fils de Makir, fils de Manassé. Il appartenait au clan de Manassé, fils de Joseph. Ses filles s’appelaient Mahla, Noa, Hogla, Milka et Tirsa.
2 And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,	2 Elles se présentèrent donc à Moïse et à Éléazar le prêtre, devant les chefs et toute la communauté, à l’entrée de la Tente du Rendez-Vous:
3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.	3 “Notre père, dirent-elles, est mort au désert, il n’appartenait pas à la bande de Coré qui se révolta contre Yahvé, mais il est mort pour son propre péché, sans avoir de fils.
4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.	4 Pourquoi le nom de notre père disparaîtrait-il au milieu de son clan? Puisqu’il n’a pas eu de fils, donne-nous un domaine au milieu des frères de notre père.”
5 And Moses brought their cause before the LORD.	5 Moïse porta ce cas devant Yahvé,
6 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,	6 et Yahvé dit à Moïse:
7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.	7 “Ce que disent les filles de Séloféhad est juste. Tu leur donneras donc en héritage une propriété au milieu des frères de leur père, et tu leur feras passer l’héritage de leur père.
8 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.	8 À ce sujet tu diras aux Israélites: Si un homme meurt sans avoir de fils, vous ferez passer son héritage à sa fille
9 And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.	9 et s’il n’a pas de fille, vous donnerez son héritage à ses frères.
10 And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.	10 S’il n’a pas de frère, vous donnerez son héritage au frère de son père,
11 And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.	11 et si son père n’a pas de frère, vous donnerez l’héritage au parent le plus proche dans sa famille: c’est lui qui en héritera. Ce sera pour les Israélites une règle de droit, comme Yahvé l’a ordonné à Moïse.”
12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.	12 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Monte sur cette montagne de la chaîne des Abarim, et regarde le pays que je donne aux Israélites.
13 And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered.	13 Quand tu l’auras vu, tu seras réuni à ton peuple comme Aaron ton frère,
14 For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.	14 parce que dans le désert de Sin, lorsque la communauté a murmuré, vous avez été rebelles à mes ordres et vous n’avez pas manifesté ma sainteté devant le peuple dans l’affaire des eaux.” (Ce sont les eaux de Mériba à Qadesh, dans le désert de Sin.)
15 And Moses spake unto the LORD, saying,	15 Moïse dit à Yahvé:
16 Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,	16 “Que Yahvé, le Dieu des esprits de tout être vivant, mette à la tête de la communauté un homme
17 Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.	17 qui sorte et rentre à sa tête. Il la fera sortir, il la fera rentrer, et la communauté de Yahvé ne sera pas comme un troupeau qui n’a pas de pasteur.”
18 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;	18 Yahvé répondit à Moïse: “Prends Josué, fils de Noun, car c’est un homme en qui se trouve l’esprit, et tu lui imposeras les mains.
19 And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.	19 Puis tu le feras venir devant Éléazar le prêtre et devant toute la communauté, et là, tu lui donneras tes consignes sous leurs yeux.
20 And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.	20 Tu lui transmettras une part de ton autorité pour que toute la communauté des Israélites lui obéisse.
21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.	21 “Désormais il pourra se présenter devant le prêtre Éléazar, qui consultera pour lui les jugements de Yahvé au moyen de l’Ourim. Et selon sa réponse, Josué sortira ou rentrera et, avec lui tous les Israélites et toute la communauté.”
22 And Moses did as the LORD commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:	22 Moïse fit ce que Yahvé lui avait commandé. Il fit venir Josué devant Éléazar le prêtre et devant toute la communauté.
23 And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.	23 Après lui avoir imposé les mains il lui donna ses ordres, ceux que Yahvé avait donnés par la bouche de Moïse.
