Jeremiah 5

1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.	1 Parcourez les rues de Jérusalem et regardez, informez-vous, cherchez sur ses places. Si vous y trouvez un homme, un seul, qui pratique la justice et cherche la vérité, je pardonnerai à la ville.
2 And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.	2 S’ils disent: “Yahvé est vivant!” c’est pour jurer faussement.
3 O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.	3 Yahvé, tes yeux ne cherchent-ils pas la vérité? Or tu les as frappés et ils n’ont pas réagi, tu les as détruits et ils ont refusé la leçon; ils se sont fait un visage de pierre et ne sont pas revenus vers toi.
4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.	4 Moi, je me disais: “Il n’y a que les pauvres pour être ainsi irresponsables; ils ne connaissent pas la voie de Yahvé, la Loi de leur Dieu.
5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.	5 J’irai donc vers les chefs et je leur parlerai, car ils connaissent la voie de Yahvé, la Loi de leur Dieu. Mais eux, c’est d’un commun accord qu’ils ont cassé le joug et rompu les liens.
6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.	6 C’est pourquoi le lion de la forêt les a frappés, le loup du désert a fait des ravages, la panthère est aux aguets à la sortie de leurs villes et déchire tous ceux qui sortent. C’est que leurs péchés sont nombreux, et ils s’entêtent dans leur révolte.
7 How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses.	7 Il faudrait te pardonner? Tes fils m’ont abandonné et jurent par des faux dieux. Quand je leur donnais leur pain, ils cherchaient l’adultère, ils s’attroupaient à la maison de la prostituée.
8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.	8 Ce sont des étalons bien nourris qui courent en liberté, et chacun renifle après la femme de son prochain.
9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?	9 Et je ne punirais pas tout cela? - parole de Yahvé. Et je ne me vengerais pas d’une nation comme celle-là?
10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD's.	10 Escaladez ces murs et détruisez tout. Arrachez ces pieds de vigne car ils ne sont pas ceux de Yahvé.
11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.	11 La maison d’Israël et la maison de Juda m’ont complètement trahi - parole de Yahvé.
12 They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:	12 Ils ont renié Yahvé, ils ont dit: “Il n’existe pas, le malheur ne viendra pas sur nous, nous ne verrons ni l’épée, ni la famine.
13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.	13 Que le vent emporte les prophètes, personne ne parle par eux; que leurs menaces retombent sur eux!”
14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.	14 C’est pourquoi, voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu Sabaot: Puisqu’ils parlent ainsi, je vais mettre dans ta bouche des paroles de feu. Ce peuple sera le bois et le feu les dévorera!
15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.	15 Yahvé l’a dit, maison d’Israël: j’amène contre vous une nation lointaine, une nation forte, une nation ancienne, une nation dont tu ne connais pas la langue, et tu ne comprends pas ce qui s’y dit.
16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.	16 Son étui à flèches est une tombe ouverte, là-bas tous sont des vaillants!
17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.	17 Elle dévorera ta moisson et ton pain, elle dévorera tes fils et tes filles, elle dévorera tes brebis et tes bœufs, elle dévorera ta vigne et ton figuier. Ses armes détruiront tes forteresses dans lesquelles tu mettais ta confiance.
18 Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.	18 Mais, même en ces jours-là, je ne te détruirai pas complètement - parole de Yahvé.
19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.	19 Lorsqu’ils demanderont: “Pourquoi Yahvé notre Dieu nous fait-il tout cela?” tu leur répondras: “Puisque vous m’avez abandonné pour servir dans votre pays des dieux étrangers, maintenant vous servirez des étrangers dans un pays qui ne sera pas le vôtre.”
20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,	20 Annoncez ceci à la maison de Jacob et proclamez ces paroles en Juda.
21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:	21 Écoutez donc ceci, peuple insensé et stupide, avec des yeux qui ne voient pas, et des oreilles qui n’entendent pas!
22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?	22 Ne me craindrez-vous pas - parole de Yahvé, ne tremblerez-vous pas devant moi? C’est moi qui mis le sable à la frontière des mers, comme une borne éternelle qu’elle ne franchira pas. Elle s’agite impuissante, ses flots mugissent mais ne vont pas au-delà.
23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.	23 Ce peuple par contre est infidèle et rebelle, ils se reprennent et s’en vont.
24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.	24 Ils ne disent pas au fond d’eux-mêmes: “Craignons Yahvé notre Dieu, qui nous donne les pluies d’automne et celles du printemps, au bon moment, et puis nous donne les semaines qu’il a fixées pour la moisson.”
25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.	25 Vos fautes ont semé là le désordre, vos péchés vous ont privés de ces biens.
26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.	26 Il y a dans mon peuple des êtres malfaisants, toujours à l’affût comme le chasseur d’oiseaux; s’ils dressent un piège, c’est pour prendre des hommes.
27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.	27 Ils ont leur cage pleine d’oiseaux, leur maison s’est remplie par la fraude ils sont devenus puissants et riches.
28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.	28 Ils sont gros, ils suent la graisse, ils n’ont plus honte du mal. Leur justice n’en est pas une: ils ne connaissent pas le droit de l’orphelin, et ne font pas droit au malheureux.
29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?	29 Et je laisserais passer ces crimes? D’un peuple comme celui-là - parole de Yahvé, je ne me vengerais pas?
30 A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;	30 On voit ici des choses honteuses, horribles:
31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?	31 les prophètes prophétisent des mensonges, les prêtres ne pensent qu’à leurs intérêts, et mon peuple aime qu’il en soit ainsi. Mais que ferez-vous à la fin?
