Isaiah 49

1 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.	1 Écoutez-moi, îles lointaines, et que vos peuples soient attentifs! Yahvé m’a appelé dès le sein de ma mère, il a connu mon nom avant que je sois né.
2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;	2 Il a fait de ma bouche une épée tranchante, et m’a gardé dans l’ombre de sa main. Il a fait de moi une flèche aiguisée qu’il tenait cachée dans son carquois.
3 And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.	3 Il m’a dit: “Tu es mon serviteur, c’est par toi que je me ferai connaître.”
4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God.	4 Moi, je disais: “Je me suis fatigué pour rien, ma force s’est épuisée en vain, pour du vent.” Mais Yahvé préservait mes droits, mon Dieu gardait ma récompense. Car j’ai de la valeur aux yeux de Yahvé, et mon Dieu s’est fait ma force.
5 And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.	5 Or voici que Yahvé a parlé, lui qui m’a mis, pas encore né, à son service, pour que je lui ramène Jacob, pour qu’Israël se refasse auprès de lui.
6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.	6 Il m’a dit: “Relever les tribus de Jacob, rassembler les survivants d’Israël, ce ne sera pas là tout ton service: je veux encore faire de toi la lumière des nations, pour que mon salut s’étende à la mesure de la terre.”
7 Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.	7 Voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Rédempteur et le Saint d’Israël, à cet esclave des tyrans que tous méprisent et que les nations détestent: “Les rois en seront témoins et se lèveront, les princes se prosterneront! Car Yahvé, le Saint d’Israël, ne peut faillir, et il t’a choisi.”
8 Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;	8 Ainsi parle Yahvé: Au temps favorable je t’ai écouté, au jour du salut je t’ai porté secours; je t’ai formé et préparé en vue d’une alliance avec le peuple: tu relèveras le pays, tu répartiras les héritages dévastés,
9 That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.	9 tu diras aux captifs: Sortez! et à ceux qui sont dans le noir: Montrez-vous! Sur tous les chemins ils pourront paître, ils verront des pâturages sur les montagnes déboisées.
10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.	10 Ils ne connaîtront plus ni la faim ni la soif. Le vent brûlant ni le soleil ne les frapperont plus, car celui qui a pitié d’eux se fera leur guide et les conduira vers les eaux jaillissantes.
11 And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.	11 Il n’y aura plus de montagne que les chemins ne franchissent, et plus de routes en contrebas.
12 Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.	12 Voyez-les qui reviennent des terres lointaines, du nord et de l’ouest, et du pays de Syène!
13 Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.	13 Cieux, criez de joie, et toi, terre, sois en fête! Montagnes, éclatez en cris de joie, car Yahvé console son peuple, il a pitié de ses malheureux.
14 But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.	14 Sion disait: “Yahvé m’a abandonnée, le Seigneur m’a oubliée.”
15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.	15 - Une femme oubliera-t-elle l’enfant qu’elle nourrit? N’aura-t-elle plus d’entrailles pour un fils? Même si l’une d’elles oubliait, moi je ne t’oublierais pas.
16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.	16 Regarde, je t’ai gravée sur la paume de mes mains, je ne cesse de penser à tes remparts.
17 Thy children shall make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee.	17 Vois comme accourent tes bâtisseurs, alors que se retirent le destructeur et le pillard.
18 Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a bride doeth.	18 Lève les yeux, regarde autour de toi: tous se rassemblent, ils viennent à toi. Par ma vie, dit Yahvé, ils seront ton vêtement de fête, tu feras d’eux ta ceinture de fiancée.
19 For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.	19 Tes ruines, tes déserts et ton pays dévasté, deviendront trop étroits pour tes habitants car ceux qui te dévoraient seront enfin dehors.
20 The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.	20 De nouveau tes fils - tu en étais privée - te diront à l’oreille: “L’endroit est trop petit pour moi, fais-moi de la place, que je puisse m’installer.”
21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?	21 Alors tu diras en ton cœur: “Qui m’a enfanté ceux-là? J’étais privée d’enfants et stérile, j’étais rejetée, exilée - et ceux-ci, qui les a élevés? Voici que j’étais restée seule, ceux-ci, où étaient-ils?”
22 Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.	22 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Yahvé: De la main je fais un signe aux nations, je dresse mon signal à la vue des peuples, et les voici qui ramènent tes fils dans leurs bras, ils t’amènent tes filles sur leurs épaules.
23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.	23 Des rois seront tes pères adoptifs et leurs princesses seront tes nourrices. Le nez à terre ils se prosterneront devant toi, ils lécheront la poussière de tes pieds. Alors tu sauras que je suis Yahvé, et que ceux qui espèrent en moi ne sont pas déçus.
24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?	24 Arrache-t-on à un guerrier sa prise? Le captif d’un tyran s’échappera-t-il?
25 But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.	25 Eh bien, voici ce que dit Yahvé: La prise du guerrier lui sera enlevée, le captif du tyran lui échappera. Si quelqu’un te prend à partie, je le prendrai à partie, et je sauverai tes fils.
26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.	26 Je ferai que tes ennemis dévorent leur propre chair, qu’ils s’enivrent de leur propre sang, et tout mortel saura que moi, Yahvé, je t’ai sauvé, que le Fort de Jacob s’est fait ton rédempteur.
