Sirach 20

1 There is a reproof that is not comely: again, some man holdeth his tongue, and he is wise.	1 Quanto meglio è il riprendere che il covar ira, e il non impedir di parlare a chi confessa [il suo torto].
2 It is much better to reprove, than to be angry secretly: and he that confesseth his fault shall be preserved from hurt.	2 [Quale] la libidine d'un eunuco [che] vuol sverginare una giovinetta,
3 How good is it, when thou art reproved, to shew repentance! for so shalt thou escape wilful sin.	3 tale è chi con la violenza fa iniquo giudizio.
4 As is the lust of an eunuch to deflower a virgin; so is he that executeth judgment with violence.	4 Quant'è bello, quando s'è ripresi, mostrar pentimento! perchè sfuggirai cosi il peccato volontario.
5 There is one that keepeth silence, and is found wise: and another by much babbling becometh hateful.	5 C'è chi tace e appare sapiente, e c'è chi è odioso per il suo troppo ciarlare.
6 Some man holdeth his tongue, because he hath not to answer: and some keepeth silence, knowing his time.	6 C'è chi tace perchè non sa che dire, e c'è chi tace perchè conosce il momento opportuno.
7 A wise man will hold his tongue till he see opportunity: but a babbler and a fool will regard no time.	7 L'uomo saggio tacerà fino al momento buono, ma il fanfarone e lo sciocco non bada al tempo.
8 He that useth many words shall be abhorred; and he that taketh to himself authority therein shall be hated.	8 Chi fa gran spreco di parole, danneggia se stesso; e chi s'arroga ingiusta licenza, sarà odiato.
9 There is a sinner that hath good success in evil things; and there is a gain that turneth to loss.	9 C'è fortuna ne' mali per taluno, e c'è guadagni che si volgono in danno.
10 There is a gift that shall not profit thee; and there is a gift whose recompence is double.	10 C'è doni che non [ti] portan vantaggio, e c'è doni che saran compensati al doppio.
11 There is an abasement because of glory; and there is that lifteth up his head from a low estate.	11 C'è il decader provocato dal fasto, e c'è chi dall'umiliazione solleva la testa.
12 There is that buyeth much for a little, and repayeth it sevenfold.	12 C'è chi compra molto a poco prezzo, e lo sconta [poi] pagando il settuplo.
13 A wise man by his words maketh him beloved: but the graces of fools shall be poured out.	13 Il saggio nel parlare si rende amabile; ma le moine degli stolti saran sprecate.
14 The gift of a fool shall do thee no good when thou hast it; neither yet of the envious for his necessity: for he looketh to receive many things for one.	14 Il dono dell'insensato [avaro] non ti gioverà, perchè egli ha sette occhi invece di uno!
15 He giveth little, and upbraideth much; he openeth his mouth like a crier; to day he lendeth, and to morrow will he ask it again: such an one is to be hated of God and man.	15 Poco dà e molto rinfaccia, e quando apre la bocca, gitta fiamme.
16 The fool saith, I have no friends, I have no thank for all my good deeds, and they that eat my bread speak evil of me.	16 Oggi dà in prestito e domani ridomanda: odioso è un tal uomo!
17 How oft, and of how many shall he be laughed to scorn! for he knoweth not aright what it is to have; and it is all one unto him as if he had it not.	17 Lo stolto non avrà amici, nè ci sarà riconoscenza per i suoi benefizi.
18 To slip upon a pavement is better than to slip with the tongue: so the fall of the wicked shall come speedily.	18 Quei che mangian del suo pane son lingue false: quante volte e in quanti si faran beffe di lui!
19 An unseasonable tale will always be in the mouth of the unwise.	19 Perchè non ha saputo discernere con retto giudizio quel che era da serbare, nè parimenti quel che non era da serbare.
20 A wise sentence shall be rejected when it cometh out of a fool's mouth; for he will not speak it in due season.	20 Le cadute della lingua fallace son come chi cada sul pavimento: cosi repentinamente sopravviene la ruina degli empi!
21 There is that is hindered from sinning through want: and when he taketh rest, he shall not be troubled.	21 L'uomo spiacente è come una favola inopportuna: sarà del continuo in bocca degl'ignoranti.
22 There is that destroyeth his own soul through bashfulness, and by accepting of persons overthroweth himself.	22 Una massima [proferita] dalla bocca dello stolto sarà rigettata, perchè non la dice a tempo debito.
23 There is that for bashfulness promiseth to his friend, and maketh him his enemy for nothing.	23 C'è chi è impedito di peccare per l'indigenza, e nel suo riposo si cruccia.
24 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is continually in the mouth of the untaught.	24 C'è chi rovina se stesso per vergogna, e per lo sguardo d'uno sciocco si rovina: per accezione di persone si perde.
25 A thief is better than a man that is accustomed to lie: but they both shall have destruction to heritage.	25 C'è chi per vergogna promette [troppo] all'amico e se ne fa gratuitamente un nemico.
26 The disposition of a liar is dishonourable, and his shame is ever with him.	26 Triste onta nell'uomo è la menzogna, e in bocca degl'Ignoranti sta del continuo.
27 A wise man shall promote himself to honour with his words: and he that hath understanding will please great men.	27 È preferibile il ladro all'uomo assiduamente bugiardo; ma l'uno e l'altro andranno in malora.
28 He that tilleth his land shall increase his heap: and he that pleaseth great men shall get pardon for iniquity.	28 La condotta de' mentitori è un disonore, e l'ignominia loro li accompagna sempre.
29 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise, and stop up his mouth that he cannot reprove.	29 Chi è saggio nel parlare, si porta avanti, e l'uomo prudente sarà accetto a' grandi.
30 Wisdom that is hid, and treasure that is hoarded up, what profit is in them both?	30 Chi lavora la sua terra, farà alto il suo mucchio di biade e chi coltiva la giustizia sarà esaltato egli stesso: chi piace ai grandi sfuggirà l'ingiustizia.
31 Better is he that hideth his folly than a man that hideth his wisdom.	31 I regali e i doni accecano gli occhi de' giudici, e, come una museruola in bocca, rattengono i loro biasimi,
32 Necessary patience in seeking ing the Lord is better than he that leadeth his life without a guide.	32 La sapienza nascosta e il tesoro invisibile, che utilità hanno l'una e l'altro?
	33 Meglio chi nasconde la sua stoltezza, che chi occulta la sua sapienza.
