1 Nevertheless thy saints had a very great light, whose voice they hearing, and not seeing their shape, because they also had not suffered the same things, they counted them happy.	1 Ma i tuoi santi godevano di vivissima luce; e [gli Egiziani] udivano la loro voce, senza vederne le fattezze e li stimavano felici, nonostante le pene già sofferte,
2 But for that they did not hurt them now, of whom they had been wronged before, they thanked them, and besought them pardon for that they had been enemies.	2 e li rigraziavano perchè non si vendicavano, pur essendo stati offesi per primi, e chiedevano venia delle ostilità passate.
3 Instead whereof thou gavest them a burning pillar of fire, both to be a guide of the unknown journey, and an harmless sun to entertain them honourably.	3 Perciò ebbero una fiammeggiante colonna di fuoco a guida dell'ignota via, e un sole tu largisti, innocuo al loro glorioso pellegrinaggio.
4 For they were worthy to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness, who had kept thy sons shut up, by whom the uncorrupt light of the law was to be given unto the world.	4 Ma quelli ben meritavano d’esser privati di luce e restar imprigionati nelle tenebre, essi che tenevan rinchiusi i tuoi figliuoli, per cui l’incorruttibile luce della legge stava per essere data al mondo.
5 And when they had determined to slay the babes of the saints, one child being cast forth, and saved, to reprove them, thou tookest away the multitude of their children, and destroyedst them altogether in a mighty water.	5 E avendo essi deliberato d’uccidere i bambini [de, santi], esposto che fu uno di questi figliuoli e salvato, in pena [di tal crudeltà] li privasti della moltitudine de, loro figli, e tutti insieme li facesti perire nelle acque violente.
6 Of that night were our fathers certified afore, that assuredly knowing unto what oaths they had given credence, they might afterwards be of good cheer.	6 Quella notte era già conosciuta per l'innanzi da nostri padri, affinché sapendo con certezza a quali giuramenti avevano prestato fede, stessero di miglior animo.
7 So of thy people was accepted both the salvation of the righteous, and destruction of the enemies.	7 E fu attesa dal tuo popolo la salvezza de'giusti e lo sterminio degl'iniqui [nemici].
8 For wherewith thou didst punish our adversaries, by the same thou didst glorify us, whom thou hadst called.	8 Come invero punisti gli avversari, cosi, chiamandoci [a te], ci glorificasti.
9 For the righteous children of good men did sacrifice secretly, and with one consent made a holy law, that the saints should be like partakers of the same good and evil, the fathers now singing out the songs of praise.	9 Di nascosto sacrificavano i pii figliuoli de’ buoni, e d’accordo stabilivano la legge divina, che agli stessi beni e pericoli avessero i giusti a partecipare del pari, e cantavan già le laudi de' padri.
10 But on the other side there sounded an ill according cry of the enemies, and a lamentable noise was carried abroad for children that were bewailed.	10 [A queste] facevan eco le discordanti grida de' nemici, e un flebile lamento s'udiva sui pianti fanciulli.
11 The master and the servant were punished after one manner; and like as the king, so suffered the common person.	11 Con la stessa pena fu punito lo schiavo e il padrone, e il popolano soffri le stesse cose che il re.
12 So they all together had innumerable dead with one kind of death; neither were the living sufficient to bury them: for in one moment the noblest offspring of them was destroyed.	12 Tutti ugualmente, per lo stesso genere di morte, avevano morti innumerevoli, e i vivi non bastavan neppure a seppellirli, perchè in un istante la progenie loro più nobile fu distrutta.
13 For whereas they would not believe any thing by reason of the enchantments; upon the destruction of the firstborn, they acknowledged this people to be the sons of God.	13 Quei che a nulla credevan per via degl’incantesimi, allo sterminio de' primogeniti confessarono che quel popolo era figlio di Dio.
14 For while all things were in quiet silence, and that night was in the midst of her swift course,	14 Mentre un tranquillo silenzio avvolgeva ogni cosa, e la notte nel suo [celere] corso era giunta a mezzo,
15 Thine Almighty word leaped down from heaven out of thy royal throne, as a fierce man of war into the midst of a land of destruction,	15 l'onnipotente tua parola dal cielo, dal trono regale, si slanciò [come] fiero guerriero nel mezzo della terra di sterminio,
16 And brought thine unfeigned commandment as a sharp sword, and standing up filled all things with death; and it touched the heaven, but it stood upon the earth.	16 portando [qual] spada affilata il tuo irrevocabile decreto, e ritta in piedi riempì ogni cosa di morte, e toccava il cielo [pur] poggiando sulla terra.
17 Then suddenly visions of horrible dreams troubled them sore, and terrors came upon them unlooked for.	17 Allora a un tratto fantasmi di terribili sogni gli spaventarono, e gl'incalzarono inaspettati terrori.
18 And one thrown here, and another there, half dead, shewed the cause of his death.	18 E gettati chi qua chi là mezzo morti, rivelavano il motivo per cui morivano.
19 For the dreams that troubled them did foreshew this, lest they should perish, and not know why they were afflicted.	19 Che que' sogni che gli avevan turbati avevan ciò presagito, affinchè non perissero senza sapere il perchè soffrivano.
20 Yea, the tasting of death touched the righteous also, and there was a destruction of the multitude in the wilderness: but the wrath endured not long.	20 Anche i giusti sfiorò un tempo la prova della morte, e ci fu nel deserto strage della moltitudine; ma non durò a lungo l'ira sua.
21 For then the blameless man made haste, and stood forth to defend them; and bringing the shield of his proper ministry, even prayer, and the propitiation of incense, set himself against the wrath, and so brought the calamity to an end, declaring that he was thy servant.	21 Perchè un uomo irreprensibile s'affrettò a combattere [per il popolo], apportando le armi del proprio ministero, la preghiera e l’incenso espiatorio; e, resistette all'ira [divina] e pose fine alla calamità, mostrando ch’egli era il tuo servo.
22 So he overcame the destroyer, not with strength of body, nor force of arms, but with a word subdued him that punished, alleging the oaths and covenants made with the fathers.	22 Vinse lo sdegno non con la forza del corpo, nè con la potenza delle armi; ma con la parola domò il punitore ricordando i giuramenti e il patto fatto con i padri.
23 For when the dead were now fallen down by heaps one upon another, standing between, he stayed the wrath, and parted the way to the living.	23 Quando già a mucchi eran caduti i morti, gli uni sugli altri, si pose in mezzo e troncò l'ira, e tagliò [ad essa] la strada verso i viventi.
24 For in the long garment was the whole world, and in the four rows of the stones was the glory of the fathers graven, and thy Majesty upon the daidem of his head.	24 Sulla sua veste talare invero era [rappresentato] tutto il mondo, e le glorie de' padri erano incise sulle quattro fila di pietre [preziose], e la tua magnificenza era scolpita sul diadema del suo capo.
25 Unto these the destroyer gave place, and was afraid of them: for it was enough that they only tasted of the wrath.	25 A queste [insegne] cedette lo sterminatore, queste temette: bastava infatti il solo saggio dell'ira.
