1 About the same time Antiochus prepared his second voyage into Egypt:	1 Antiocus préparait alors sa seconde attaque contre l’Égypte.
2 And then it happened, that through all the city, for the space almost of forty days, there were seen horsemen running in the air, in cloth of gold, and armed with lances, like a band of soldiers,	2 Or voici qu’à la même époque, dans toute la ville, on eut pendant près de 40 jours des apparitions: des cavaliers dont les vêtements étaient brodés d’or galopaient dans le ciel, des troupes armées défilaient en bon ordre,
3 And troops of horsemen in array, encountering and running one against another, with shaking of shields, and multitude of pikes, and drawing of swords, and casting of darts, and glittering of golden ornaments, and harness of all sorts.	3 des escadrons montés se rangeaient pour la bataille, avec des attaques et des charges de part et d’autre, des mouvements de boucliers, des forêts de lances, des épées tirées du fourreau, des flèches qui volaient, des armures d’or brillant de tout leur éclat et des cuirasses de toute espèce.
4 Wherefore every man prayed that that apparition might turn to good.	4 C’est pourquoi tous souhaitaient que ces apparitions annoncent quelque événement heureux.
5 Now when there was gone forth a false rumour, as though Antiochus had been dead, Jason took at the least a thousand men, and suddenly made an assault upon the city; and they that were upon the walls being put back, and the city at length taken, Menelans fled into the castle:	5 À la suite d’une fausse rumeur sur la mort d’Antiocus, Jason prit avec lui au moins un millier d’hommes et vint attaquer la ville à l’improviste; ceux qui défendaient les remparts furent débordés et la ville fut prise, obligeant Ménélas à se réfugier dans la forteresse.
6 But Jason slew his own citizens without mercy, not considering that to get the day of them of his own nation would be a most unhappy day for him; but thinking they had been his enemies, and not his countrymen, whom he conquered.	6 Jason se livra au massacre de ses propres concitoyens sans la moindre pitié, sans penser qu’une victoire remportée sur ses compatriotes est la plus grande défaite; il les écrasait voyant en eux des ennemis, et non des gens de sa nation.
7 Howbeit for all this he obtained not the principality, but at the last received shame for the reward of his treason, and fled again into the country of the Ammonites.	7 Cependant il n’arriva pas à prendre le pouvoir: toute son entreprise aboutit à un échec et il fut obligé de se réfugier de nouveau en Ammanitide.
8 In the end therefore he had an unhappy return, being accused before Aretas the king of the Arabians, fleeing from city to city, pursued of all men, hated as a forsaker of the laws, and being had in abomination as an open enemy of his country and countrymen, he was cast out into Egypt.	8 Sa conduite criminelle arriva à son terme: accusé d’abord auprès d’Arétas, roi des Arabes, il chercha refuge de ville en ville. Poursuivi par tous, détesté pour avoir renié les lois, rejeté comme le bourreau de sa patrie et de ses compatriotes, il partit pour l’Égypte.
9 Thus he that had driven many out of their country perished in a strange land, retiring to the Lacedemonians, and thinking there to find succour by reason of his kindred:	9 Lui qui avait exilé beaucoup de gens loin de leur patrie, il mourut finalement sur une terre étrangère, car il partit pour Lacédémone où il pensait qu’on l’accueillerait en raison de notre parenté de race avec ce peuple.
10 And he that had cast out many unburied had none to mourn for him, nor any solemn funerals at all, nor sepulchre with his fathers.	10 Lui qui avait laissé sur le sol tant de cadavres sans sépulture, il ne fut pas enterré dans le tombeau de ses pères: personne ne le pleura, personne ne lui rendit les derniers devoirs.
11 Now when this that was done came to the king's car, he thought that Judea had revolted: whereupon removing out of Egypt in a furious mind, he took the city by force of arms,	11 lorsque le roi apprit tout cela, il pensa que la Judée voulait prendre son indépendance; il quitta donc l’Égypte, furieux comme une bête sauvage, et s’empara de la ville à main armée.
12 And commanded his men of war not to spare such as they met, and to slay such as went up upon the houses.	12 Il commanda aux soldats de massacrer sans pitié ceux qu’ils rencontreraient et d’égorger ceux qui se réfugieraient dans leurs maisons.
13 Thus there was killing of young and old, making away of men, women, and children, slaying of virgins and infants.	13 On tua ainsi les jeunes et les vieux, on fit périr les femmes et les enfants, on égorgea des jeunes filles et des nourrissons.
14 And there were destroyed within the space of three whole days fourscore thousand, whereof forty thousand were slain in the conflict; and no fewer sold than slain.	14 En trois jours il y eut 80 000 victimes; 40 000 tombèrent sous les coups et les autres furent vendus comme esclaves.
15 Yet was he not content with this, but presumed to go intothe most holy temple of all the world; Menelans, that traitor to the laws, and to his own country, being his guide:	15 Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, le roi pénétra dans le Sanctuaire le plus saint de toute la terre, guidé par Ménélas qui en était arrivé à trahir les lois et la patrie.
16 And taking the holy vessels with polluted hands, and with profane hands pulling down the things that were dedicated by other kings to the augmentation and glory and honour of the place, he gave them away.	16 De ses mains impures il prit les vases sacrés, de ses mains profanes il ramassa les offrandes que d’autres rois avait déposées là pour augmenter encore la gloire de ce lieu.
17 And so haughty was Antiochus in mind, that he considered not that the Lord was angry for a while for the sins of them that dwelt in the city, and therefore his eye was not upon the place.	17 Gonflé d’orgueil, Antiocus ne voyait pas que le Seigneur s’était mis en colère pour peu de temps à cause des péchés des habitants de la ville et que pour cette raison il semblait oublier ce lieu.
18 For had they not been formerly wrapped in many sins, this man, as soon as he had come, had forthwith been scourged, and put back from his presumption, as Heliodorus was, whom Seleucus the king sent to view the treasury.	18 Sinon, s’ils n’avaient pas été coupables d’un grand nombre de péchés, il aurait été fouetté lui aussi dès son arrivée et corrigé de son audace, tout comme cet Héliodore que le roi Séleucus avait envoyé pour inspecter le trésor;
19 Nevertheless God did not choose the people for the place's sake, but the place far the people's sake.	19 mais Dieu n’a pas choisi le peuple à cause de ce lieu, il a choisi ce lieu à cause du peuple.
20 And therefore the place itself, that was partaker with them of the adversity that happened to the nation, did afterward communicate in the benefits sent from the Lord: and as it was forsaken in the wrath of the Almighty, so again, the great Lord being reconciled, it was set up with all glory.	20 C’est pour cela que ce lieu a participé aux malheurs du peuple comme par la suite il a été associé aux bienfaits du Seigneur; il a été abandonné par le Tout-Puissant dans sa colère, comme par la suite il a été rétabli dans toute sa gloire quand le Seigneur Tout-Puissant s’est réconcilié avec son peuple.
21 So when Antiochus had carried out of the temple a thousand and eight hundred talents, he departed in all haste unto Antiochia, weening in his pride to make the land navigable, and the sea passable by foot: such was the haughtiness of his mind.	21 Antiocus donc, avait enlevé 1 800 talents dans le Temple et s’en était retourné rapidement à Antioche; dans son orgueil il se croyait capable de rendre navigable la terre ferme et de tracer des routes sur la mer.
22 And he left governors to vex the nation: at Jerusalem, Philip, for his country a Phrygian, and for manners more barbarous than he that set him there;	22 Il laissa des fonctionnaires pour réprimer notre race: à Jérusalem, Philippe originaire de Phrygie, qui était plus cruel encore que celui qui l’avait établi;
23 And at Garizim, Andronicus; and besides, Menelans, who worse than all the rest bare an heavy hand over the citizens, having a malicious mind against his countrymen the Jews.	23 au Garizim, Andronique; et en plus de ces derniers, Ménélas dont la méchanceté envers ses compatriotes était pire encore: il n’avait que de la haine pour ses compatriotes juifs.
24 He sent also that detestable ringleader Apollonius with an army of two and twenty thousand, commanding him to slay all those that were in their best age, and to sell the women and the younger sort:	24 Le roi envoya le gouverneur Apollonius à la tête d’une armée de 22 000 hommes, avec l’ordre d’égorger tous ceux qui étaient dans la force de l’âge et de vendre comme esclaves les femmes et les enfants.
25 Who coming to Jerusalem, and pretending peace, did forbear till the holy day of the sabbath, when taking the Jews keeping holy day, he commanded his men to arm themselves.	25 Il arriva ainsi à Jérusalem en jouant les hommes pacifiques et il attendit jusqu’au saint jour du sabbat. Profitant du repos des Juifs, il commanda à ses hommes de faire une prise d’armes;
26 And so he slew all them that were gone to the celebrating of the sabbath, and running through the city with weapons slew great multitudes.	26 il fit massacrer tous ceux qui étaient sortis pour assister au spectacle et, parcourant la ville avec ses soldats, il mit à mort une grande quantité de personnes.
27 But Judas Maccabeus with nine others, or thereabout, withdrew himself into the wilderness, and lived in the mountains after the manner of beasts, with his company, who fed on herbs continually, lest they should be partakers of the pollution.	27 C’est alors que Judas appelé Maccabée se retira dans le désert avec une dizaine de personnes; avec ses compagnons, il vivait comme les bêtes sauvages sur les montagnes, s’obligeant à un régime végétarien plutôt que de se rendre impur.
