1 This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he ha terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.	1 Or il sopradetto Simone, delatore del tesoro e della patria, parlava male di Onia, come se egli avesse istigato Eliodoro a tali cose, e fosse lui l'autore dei mali:
2 Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws.	2 Il provveditore della città, il difensore della sua nazione, lo zelatore della legge di Dio, ardiva dirlo insidioso nemico dello stato.
3 But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon's faction murders were committed,	3 Siccome le inimicizie erano giunte a tal segno che da alcuni degli amici di Simone eran commessi degli omicidi,

6 For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto.	6 e perchè vedeva bene che senza l'intervento del re era impossibile pacificare le cose e far cessare Simone dalle sue follie.
7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest,	7 Morto Seleuco e succeduto a lui Antioco, soprannominato Ispirane, Giasone, fratello d'Onia, tramando d'usurpare il pontificato,
8 Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents:	8 andò a trovare il re e gli promise trecentosessanta talenti, e, dei redditi, altri ottanta talenti,
9 Beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians.	9 e di più altri centocinquanta talenti per il permesso di fondar un ginnasio e un'efebia e dare a quelli di Gerusalemme la cittadinanza d'Antiochia.
10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to Greekish fashion.	10 Avutone dal re il permesso, ed ottenuto il principato, cominciò subito a far passare i suoi connazionali ai costumi dei pagani.
11 And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law:	11 Tolte le franchigie che l'umanità dei re (grazie ai buoni uffici di Giovanni, padre di quell'Eupolemo che fu mandato a Roma come ambasciatore per fare alleanza e amicizia) aveva concesse, egli distrusse i diritti dei cittadini, e stabilì leggi perverse.
12 For he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat.	12 Egli ardì fondare, sotto la stessa fortezza, un ginnasio, e di mettere nei lupanari il fior della gioventù.
13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;	13 Così cominciato, tanto s'avanzò e progredì il modo di vivere alla pagana e alla straniera, in seguito all'infame e inaudita malvagità dell'empio e non sacerdote Giasone,
14 That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth;	14 che i sacerdoti non eran più intenti al ministero dell'altare, e, disprezzato il tempio, e negletti i sacrifizi, correvano a prender parte alla palestra, ai premi indegni e agli esercizi del disco.
15 Not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all.	15 Non facendo alcun caso degli onori della patria, stimavano le migliori glorie quelle greche.
16 By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things.	16 A causa di esse s'abbandonavano a pericolose contese, e zelavano le usanze di quelli e desideravano essere in tutto simili a quelli che erano stati loro nemici e distruttori.
17 For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God: but the time following shall declare these things.	17 Non si violano mai impunemente le leggi divine. Ma ciò lo dimostrerà il tempo che segue.
18 Now when the game that was used every faith year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present,	18 Mentre si celebravano a Tiro i giuochi quinquennali, ai quali era presente il re,
19 This ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges.	19 il criminale Giasone mandò a Gerusalemme degli uomini perversi, a portare trecento di dramme d'argento pel sacrifizio di Ercole; ma quelli che le portarono chiesero che non fossero spese nei sacrifizi, che non era conveniente, ma fossero impiegate in altri usi.
20 This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules' sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof, it was employed to the making of gallies.	20 Così erano state offerte pel sacrifizio di Ercole da chi l'aveva mandate, ma per opera di quelli che le portarono furono impiegate nella costruzione di triremi.
21 Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppa, and from thence to Jerusalem:	21 Quando Antioco, dopo aver mandato in Egitto Apollonio, figlio di Mnesteo, a trattare con i grandi del re Tolomeo Filometore, s'accorse d'essere escluso dagli affari del regno, e pensando al suo interesse, partì per Ioppe e venne a Gerusalemme,
22 Where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch alight, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice.	22 fu accolto con magnificenza da Giasone e dalla città, ove entrò in mezzo a fiaccole accese e canti di lode: indi tornò coll'esercito nella Fenicia.
23 Three years afterward Jason sent Menelans, the aforesaid Simon's brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters.	23 Tre anni dopo, Giasone mandò Menelao, fratello del sopra detto Simone, a portar dei danari al re, e a riceverne gli ordini su affari d'importanza.
24 But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.	24 Ma Menelao, acquistatosi il favore del re coi magnificare lo splendore della sua potenza, fece venire nelle sue mani il sommo sacerdozio, dando trecento talenti d'argento più di Giasone,
25 So he came with the king's mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.	25 e ricevuti gli ordini del re, se ne tornò. Egli, nulla avendo degno del sacerdozio, aveva il cuore d'un crudele tiranno e la rabbia d'una fiera selvaggia.
26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites.	26 Così Giasone, che aveva ingannato il suo fratello, fu pure ingannato e cacciato in esilio nel paese degli Ammoniti.
27 So Menelans got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratis the ruler of the castle required it:	27 Or Menelao ottenne il principato, ma nulla faceva riguardo al danaro promesso al re, non ostante che Sostrato, governatore della cittadella, l'esigesse,
28 For unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king.	28 avendo l'incarico d'esigere i tributi. Per la qual cosa tutt'e due furono chiamati davanti ai re:
29 Now Menelans left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood; and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians.	29 Menelao fu doposto dal pontificato, nel quale ebbe per successore Lisimaco suo fratello, e Sostrato fu mandato al governo di Cipro.
30 While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king's concubine, called Antiochus.	30 Mentre succedevano queste cose, accadde che quei di Tarso e quelli di Mallo si rivoltarono, perchè erano stati dati come dono ad Antiochide, concubina del re.
31 Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy.	31 Il re, partito in fretta per sedarli, lasciò a far le sue veci Andronico, uno dei grandi della sua corte.
32 Now Menelans, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about.	32 Allora Menelao, pensando d'avere scelto il tempo opportuno, rubò alcuni vasi d'oro al tempio, e ne fece un dono ad Andronico, dopo averne venduti degli altri in Tiro e nelle città vicine.
33 Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia.	33 Saputa con certezza la cosa, Onia lo rimproverò, mettendosi però in luogo sicuro ad Antiochia presso Dafne.
34 Wherefore Menelans, taking Andronicus apart, prayed, him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard of justice.	34 Per questo, Menelao, andato a trovare Andronico, lo pregò ad uccidere Onia. E (Andronico) andato a trovare Onia, dandogli la destra con giuramento, sebbene gli lasciasse dei sospetti, lo persuase a uscir dall'asilo, e subito, senza alcun riguardo alla giustizia, lo uccise.
35 For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man.	35 Per questo fatto, non soltanto i Giudei, ma anche le altre nazioni restarono indignate, e mal sopportarono l'ingiusta morte di sì grand'uomo.
36 And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause.	36 Così quando il re tornò dalla Cilicia, i Giudei d'Antiochia insieme ai Greci andarono a lamentarsi dell'iniqua morte d'Onia.
37 Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead.	37 Antioco ne ebbe l'animo contristato, e mosso a pietà dal caso d'Onia, versò delle lacrime, ricordando la sobrietà e la modestia del defunto;
38 And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved.	38 e, acceso di sdegno, ordinò die Andronico, spogliato della porpora, fosso menato attorno per tutta la città e che al sacrilego fosse tolta la vita nel medesimo luogo nel quale aveva commessa l'empietà contro Onia. Così il Signore gli diede il meritato castigo.
39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelans, and the fruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away.	39 Avendo poi Lisimaco fatti molti sacrilegi nel tempio ad istigazione di Menelao, divulgatasi la fama del molto oro portato via, si radunò il popolo contro Lisimaco,
40 Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly.	40 e siccome le turbo tumultuavano e gli animi eran pieni d'ira, Lisimaco, armati circa tre mila uomini, capitanati da un certo tiranno, avanzato nell'età come nella demenza, cominciò a far violenze.
41 They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them.	41 Ma, conosciuti i disegni di Lisimaco, chi si armò di sassi, chi di groassi bastoni, e alcuni gettarono ad dosso a Lisimaco la cenere,
42 Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury.	42 molti ne ferirono, alcuni ne uccisero, tutto il resto fu messo in fuga, e lo stesso sacrilego rimase ucciso presso l'erario.
43 Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelans.	43 Di tutte queste cose si cominciò ad agitar la causa contro Menelao, ù
44 Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him:	44 e quando il re andò a Tiro, tre uomini mandati dagli anziani riferirono a lui l'affare.
45 But Menelans, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him.	45 Menelao, ridotto a mal partito, promise grossa somma di danaro a Tolomeo, se gli rendeva favorevole il re.
46 Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind:	46 Tolomeo andò a trovare il re mentre se ne stava sotto i portici a prendere il fresco, e gli fece cambiar sentenza.
47 Insomuch that he discharged Menelans from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death.	47 Così egli assolse Menelao dai delitti, sebbene fosse reo di tutto il male, e gl'infelici che, anche se avessero esposta la loro causa agli Sciti, sarebbero stati dichiarati innocenti, li condannò a morte.
48 Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.	48 Furono dunque in fretta puniti ingiustamente quelli che avevan sostenuta la causa della città, del popolo e dei vasi sacri.
49 Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried.	49 Gli stessi Tiri ne furono indignati, e furono generosissimi per la loro sepoltura.
50 And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelans remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens.	50 Ma intanto Menelao, per l'avarizia dei potenti, conservò l'autorità, e crebbe nella malizia a danno dei cittadini.
