1 But Nicanor, hearing that Judas and his company were in the strong places about Samaria, resolved without any danger to set upon them on the sabbath day.	1 Nicànore, avendo saputo che gli uomini di Giuda si trovavano nella regione della Samaria, decise di assalirli a colpo sicuro nel giorno del riposo.
2 Nevertheless the Jews that were compelled to go with him said, O destroy not so cruelly and barbarously, but give honour to that day, which he, that seeth all things, hath honoured with holiness above all other days.	2 Poiché i Giudei che l’avevano seguito per necessità gli dicevano: «Assolutamente non devi ucciderli in modo così crudele e barbaro; piuttosto rispetta il giorno che è stato onorato e santificato da colui che tutto vede»,
3 Then the most ungracious wretch demanded, if there were a Mighty one in heaven, that had commanded the sabbath day to be kept.	3 quell’uomo tre volte scellerato chiese se c’era in cielo un Signore che aveva comandato di celebrare il giorno del sabato.
4 And when they said, There is in heaven a living Lord, and mighty, who commanded the seventh day to be kept:	4 Essi risposero: «C’è il Signore vivente; egli è il sovrano del cielo, che ha comandato di celebrare il settimo giorno».
5 Then said the other, And I also am mighty upon earth, and I command to take arms, and to do the king's business. Yet he obtained not to have his wicked will done.	5 L’altro ribatté: «E io sono sovrano sulla terra, che comando di prendere le armi e di eseguire le disposizioni del re». Tuttavia non riuscì a mandare a effetto il suo crudele intento.
6 So Nicanor in exceeding pride and haughtiness determined to set up a publick monument of his victory over Judas and them that were with him.	6 Nicànore, dunque, che si era montato la testa con tutta la sua arroganza, aveva deciso di erigere un pubblico trofeo per la vittoria sugli uomini di Giuda.
7 But Maccabeus had ever sure confidence that the Lord would help him:	7 Il Maccabeo invece era fermamente convinto e sperava pienamente di ottenere protezione dal Signore.
8 Wherefore he exhorted his people not to fear the coming of the heathen against them, but to remember the help which in former times they had received from heaven, and now to expect the victory and aid, which should come unto them from the Almighty.	8 Esortava perciò i suoi uomini a non temere l’attacco delle nazioni, ma a tenere impressi nella mente gli aiuti che in passato erano venuti loro dal Cielo e ad aspettare ora la vittoria che sarebbe stata loro concessa dall’Onnipotente.
9 And so comforting them out of the law and the prophets, and withal putting them in mind of the battles that they won afore, he made them more cheerful.	9 Confortandoli così con le parole della legge e dei profeti e ricordando loro le lotte che avevano già condotto a termine, li rese più coraggiosi.
10 And when he had stirred up their minds, he gave them their charge, shewing them therewithall the falsehood of the heathen, and the breach of oaths.	10 Avendo così rinfrancato i loro sentimenti, espose e denunciò la malafede delle nazioni e la loro violazione dei giuramenti.
11 Thus he armed every one of them, not so much with defence of shields and spears, as with comfortable and good words: and beside that, he told them a dream worthy to be believed, as if it had been so indeed, which did not a little rejoice them.	11 Dopo aver armato ciascuno di loro non tanto con la sicurezza degli scudi e delle lance quanto con il conforto di quelle efficaci parole, li riempì di gioia, narrando loro un sogno degno di fede, anzi una vera visione.
12 And this was his vision: That Onias, who had been high priest, a virtuous and a good man, reverend in conversation, gentle in condition, well spoken also, and exercised from a child in all points of virtue, holding up his hands prayed for the whole body of the Jews.	12 La sua visione era questa: Onia, che era stato sommo sacerdote, uomo onesto e buono, modesto nel portamento, mite nel contegno, spedito ed elegante nel parlare, occupato fin dalla fanciullezza in tutto ciò che è proprio della virtù, con le mani protese pregava per tutta la comunità dei Giudei.
13 This done, in like manner there appeared a man with gray hairs, and exceeding glorious, who was of a wonderful and excellent majesty.	13 Poi, allo stesso modo, era apparso un uomo distinto per età senile e maestà, circonfuso di dignità meravigliosa e piena di magnificenza.
14 Then Onias answered, saying, This is a lover of the brethren, who prayeth much for the people, and for the holy city, to wit, Jeremias the prophet of God.	14 Presa la parola, Onia disse: «Questi è l’amico dei suoi fratelli, che prega molto per il popolo e per la città santa, Geremia, il profeta di Dio».
15 Whereupon Jeremias holding forth his right hand gave to Judas a sword of gold, and in giving it spake thus,	15 E Geremia stendendo la destra consegnò a Giuda una spada d’oro, pronunciando queste parole nel porgerla:
16 Take this holy sword, a gift from God, with the which thou shalt wound the adversaries.	16 «Prendi la spada sacra come dono di Dio; con questa abbatterai i nemici».
17 Thus being well comforted by the words of Judas, which were very good, and able to stir them up to valour, and to encourage the hearts of the young men, they determined not to pitch camp, but courageously to set upon them, and manfully to try the matter by conflict, because the city and the sanctuary and the temple were in danger.	17 Incoraggiati dalle parole di Giuda, molto belle e tali da spingere all’eroismo e da rendere virile anche l’animo dei giovani, stabilirono di non restare nel campo, ma di intervenire coraggiosamente e decidere la sorte attaccando battaglia con tutto il coraggio, perché la città e le cose sante e il tempio erano in pericolo.
18 For the care that they took for their wives, and their children, their brethren, and folks, was in least account with them: but the greatest and principal fear was for the holy temple.	18 Minore era il loro timore per le donne e i figli come pure per i fratelli e i parenti, poiché la prima e principale preoccupazione era per il tempio consacrato.
19 Also they that were in the city took not the least care, being troubled for the conflict abroad.	19 Anche per quelli rimasti in città non era piccola l’angoscia, essendo tutti turbati per l’ansia del combattimento in campo aperto.
20 And now, when as all looked what should be the trial, and the enemies were already come near, and the army was set in array, and the beasts conveniently placed, and the horsemen set in wings,	20 Tutti ormai attendevano la prova imminente, poiché i nemici già avevano cominciato ad attaccare e l’esercito era in ordine di battaglia, gli elefanti erano piazzati in posizione opportuna e la cavalleria schierata ai lati.
21 Maccabeus seeing the coming of the multitude, and the divers preparations of armour, and the fierceness of the beasts, stretched out his hands toward heaven, and called upon the Lord that worketh wonders, knowing that victory cometh not by arms, but even as it seemeth good to him, he giveth it to such as are worthy:	21 Il Maccabeo, dopo aver osservato la moltitudine dei presenti, la varietà delle armi pronte e la ferocia delle bestie, alzò le mani al cielo e invocò il Signore che compie prodigi, convinto che non è possibile vincere con le armi, ma che egli concede la vittoria a coloro che ne sono degni, secondo il suo giudizio.
22 Therefore in his prayer he said after this manner; O Lord, thou didst send thine angel in the time of Ezekias king of Judea, and didst slay in the host of Sennacherib an hundred fourscore and five thousand:	22 Nel pregare il Signore, si esprimeva in questo modo: «Tu, Signore, inviasti il tuo angelo al tempo di Ezechia, re della Giudea, ed egli fece perire nel campo di Sennàcherib centoottantacinquemila uomini.
23 Wherefore now also, O Lord of heaven, send a good angel before us for a fear and dread unto them;	23 Anche ora, sovrano del cielo, manda un angelo buono davanti a noi per incutere paura e tremore.
24 And through the might of thine arm let those be stricken with terror, that come against thy holy people to blaspheme. And he ended thus.	24 Siano atterriti dalla potenza del tuo braccio coloro che bestemmiando sono venuti qui contro il tuo popolo santo». Con queste parole egli terminò.
25 Then Nicanor and they that were with him came forward with trumpets and songs.	25 Gli uomini di Nicànore avanzavano al suono delle trombe e degli inni di guerra.
26 But Judas and his company encountered the enemies with invocation and prayer.	26 Gli uomini di Giuda invece si gettarono nella mischia contro i nemici tra invocazioni e preghiere.
27 So that fighting with their hands, and praying unto God with their hearts, they slew no less than thirty and five thousand men: for through the appearance of God they were greatly cheered.	27 In tal modo, combattendo con le mani, ma pregando Dio con il cuore, travolsero non meno di trentacinquemila uomini, rallegrandosi grandemente per la manifesta presenza di Dio.
28 Now when the battle was done, returning again with joy, they knew that Nicanor lay dead in his harness.	28 Terminata la battaglia, mentre facevano ritorno pieni di gioia, riconobbero Nicànore caduto con tutte le sue armi.
29 Then they made a great shout and a noise, praising the Almighty in their own language.	29 Levarono alte grida dandosi all’entusiasmo, mentre benedicevano l’Onnipotente nella lingua dei padri.
30 And Judas, who was ever the chief defender of the citizens both in body and mind, and who continued his love toward his countrymen all his life, commanded to strike off Nicanor's head, and his hand with his shoulder, and bring them to Jerusalem.	30 Quindi colui che era stato sempre il primo a combattere per i suoi concittadini con anima e corpo, colui che aveva conservato l’affetto dell’età giovanile verso i suoi connazionali, comandò che tagliassero la testa di Nicànore e la sua mano con il braccio e li portassero a Gerusalemme.
31 So when he was there, and called them of his nation together, and set the priests before the altar, he sent for them that were of the tower,	31 Quando vi giunse, convocati tutti i connazionali e collocati i sacerdoti davanti all’altare, mandò a chiamare quelli della Cittadella
32 And shewed them vile Nicanor's head, and the hand of that blasphemer, which with proud brags he had stretched out against the holy temple of the Almighty.	32 e mostrò loro la testa dello scellerato Nicànore e la mano che quel bestemmiatore aveva steso contro la sacra dimora dell’Onnipotente, pronunciando parole arroganti.
33 And when he had cut out the tongue of that ungodly Nicanor, he commanded that they should give it by pieces unto the fowls, and hang up the reward of his madness before the temple.	33 Tagliata poi la lingua del sacrilego Nicànore, la fece gettare a pezzi agli uccelli e ordinò di appendere davanti al tempio la ricompensa della sua follia.
34 So every man praised toward the heaven the glorious Lord, saying, Blessed be he that hath kept his own place undefiled.	34 Tutti allora, rivolti verso il cielo, benedissero il Signore glorioso dicendo: «Benedetto colui che ha conservato la sua dimora inviolata».
35 He hanged also Nicanor's head upon the tower, an evident and manifest sign unto all of the help of the Lord.	35 Fece poi appendere la testa di Nicànore alla Cittadella alla vista di tutti, perché fosse segno manifesto dell’aiuto di Dio.
36 And they ordained all with a common decree in no case to let that day pass without solemnity, but to celebrate the thirtieth day of the twelfth month, which in the Syrian tongue is called Adar, the day before Mardocheus' day.	36 Quindi deliberarono tutti insieme, con voto pubblico, di non lasciar passare inosservato quel giorno, ma di commemorarlo il tredici del dodicesimo mese – che in lingua aramaica si chiama Adar – il giorno precedente la festa di Mardocheo.
37 Thus went it with Nicanor: and from that time forth the Hebrews had the city in their power. And here will I make an end.	37 Così andarono le cose riguardo a Nicànore e, poiché da quel tempo la città è rimasta in mano agli Ebrei, anch’io chiudo qui la mia narrazione.
38 And if I have done well, and as is fitting the story, it is that which I desired: but if slenderly and meanly, it is that which I could attain unto.	38 Se essa è riuscita ben ordinata, era quello che volevo; se invece è di poco conto e mediocre, questo solo ho potuto fare.
39 For as it is hurtful to drink wine or water alone; and as wine mingled with water is pleasant, and delighteth the taste: even so speech finely framed delighteth the ears of them that read the story. And here shall be an end.	39 Come il bere solo vino o bere solo acqua è nocivo, mentre vino mescolato con acqua è amabile e procura un delizioso piacere, così un discorso ben elaborato delizia gli orecchi di coloro che leggono la narrazione. E qui sia la fine.
