1 Now when Jonathan saw that time served him, he chose certain men, and sent them to Rome, for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them.	1 Giònata, vedendo che le circostanze gli erano propizie, scelse alcuni uomini e li inviò a Roma per ristabilire e rinnovare l’amicizia con i Romani.
2 He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians, and to other places, for the same purpose.	2 Anche presso gli Spartani e in altre località inviò lettere sullo stesso argomento.
3 So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said, Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in former time.	3 Partirono dunque per Roma, entrarono nel Senato e dissero: «Giònata, sommo sacerdote, e la nazione dei Giudei ci hanno inviati a rinnovare l’amicizia e l’alleanza con loro come prima».
4 Upon this the Romans gave them letters unto the governors of every place that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably.	4 E i Romani diedero loro delle lettere per le autorità dei vari luoghi, perché favorissero il loro ritorno pacifico in Giudea.
5 And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians:	5 Questa è invece la copia della lettera che Giònata scrisse agli Spartani:
6 Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other of the Jews, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting:	6 «Giònata, sommo sacerdote, e il consiglio degli anziani della nazione, i sacerdoti e il resto del popolo dei Giudei, agli Spartani, loro fratelli, salute!
7 There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from Darius, who reigned then among you, to signify that ye are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.	7 Già in passato era stata spedita una lettera a Onia, sommo sacerdote, da parte di Areo, che regnava fra di voi, con l’attestazione che siete nostri fratelli, come risulta dalla copia annessa.
8 At which time Onias entreated the ambassador that was sent honourably, and received the letters, wherein declaration was made of the league and friendship.	8 Onia aveva accolto con onore l’inviato e aveva accettato la lettera, nella quale erano dichiarazioni di alleanza e di amicizia.
9 Therefore we also, albeit we need none of these things, that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us,	9 Noi dunque, pur non avendone bisogno, avendo a conforto le scritture sacre che sono nelle nostre mani,
10 Have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers unto you altogether: for there is a long time passed since ye sent unto us.	10 ci siamo indotti a questa missione per rinnovare la fratellanza e l’amicizia con voi, in modo da non diventare per voi degli estranei; molti anni infatti sono passati da quando mandaste messaggeri a noi.
11 We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our feasts, and other convenient days, do remember you in the sacrifices which we offer, and in our prayers, as reason is, and as it becometh us to think upon our brethren:	11 Noi dunque fedelmente, in tutte le feste e negli altri giorni prescritti, ci ricordiamo di voi nei sacrifici che offriamo e nelle nostre invocazioni, com’è doveroso e conveniente ricordarsi dei fratelli.
12 And we are right glad of your honour.	12 Ci rallegriamo della vostra gloria.
13 As for ourselves, we have had great troubles and wars on every side, forsomuch as the kings that are round about us have fought against us.	13 Noi invece siamo stati stretti da tante oppressioni e molte guerre: ci hanno combattuto i re dei paesi vicini,
14 Howbeit we would not be troublesome unto you, nor to others of our confederates and friends, in these wars:	14 ma non abbiamo voluto disturbare né voi né gli altri nostri alleati e amici in queste lotte;
15 For we have help from heaven that succoureth us, so as we are delivered from our enemies, and our enemies are brought under foot.	15 abbiamo infatti dal Cielo un valido aiuto, per il quale siamo stati liberati dai nostri nemici, mentre essi sono stati umiliati.
16 For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater he son of Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the amity that we had with them, and the former league.	16 Ora abbiamo designato Numenio, figlio di Antioco, e Antìpatro, figlio di Giasone, e li abbiamo inviati presso i Romani a rinnovare la precedente amicizia e alleanza con loro.
17 We commanded them also to go unto you, and to salute and to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.	17 Abbiamo quindi dato loro disposizioni di passare anche da voi, per salutarvi e consegnarvi la nostra lettera, riguardante la ripresa dei nostri rapporti e la nostra fratellanza.
18 Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto.	18 Voi dunque farete cosa ottima, comunicandoci una risposta al riguardo».
19 And this is the copy of the letters which Oniares sent.	19 E questa è la copia della lettera che essi avevano inviato a Onia:
20 Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest, greeting:	20 «Areo, re degli Spartani, a Onia, grande sacerdote, salute!
21 It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham:	21 Si è trovato in una scrittura, riguardante gli Spartani e i Giudei, che essi sono fratelli e che discendono dalla stirpe di Abramo.
22 Now therefore, since this is come to our knowledge, ye shall do well to write unto us of your prosperity.	22 Ora, dal momento che siamo venuti a conoscenza di questo fatto, ci farete cosa gradita, scrivendoci sui vostri sentimenti di amicizia.
23 We do write back again to you, that your cattle and goods are our's, and our's are your's We do command therefore our ambassadors to make report unto you on this wise.	23 Noi intanto vi rispondiamo: “Il vostro bestiame e i vostri averi ci appartengono e i nostri appartengono a voi”. Abbiamo quindi ordinato che vi sia riferito in questo senso».
24 Now when Jonathan heard that Demebius' princes were come to fight against him with a greater host than afore,	24 Giònata ebbe notizia che i generali di Demetrio erano ritornati con forze più numerose di prima, per ritentare la guerra contro di lui.
25 He removed from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amathis: for he gave them no respite to enter his country.	25 Egli si mosse da Gerusalemme e andò loro incontro nella regione di Amat, perché non volle dare loro il tempo di penetrare nella sua regione.
26 He sent spies also unto their tents, who came again, and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night season.	26 Mandò nel loro campo delle spie, le quali tornarono annunciando che essi stavano disponendosi per dare loro l’assalto di notte.
27 Wherefore so soon as the sun was down, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms, that all the night long they might be ready to fight: also he sent forth centinels round about the host.	27 Quando fu il tramonto, Giònata comandò ai suoi di vegliare tutta la notte e di stare con le armi pronte per la battaglia, e dispose sentinelle intorno al campo.
28 But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they feared, and trembled in their hearts, and they kindled fires in their camp.	28 Ma anche gli avversari seppero che Giònata e i suoi uomini stavano pronti per la battaglia; furon presi da timore, si persero d’animo, accesero fuochi nel loro campo e fuggirono.
29 Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.	29 Giònata e i suoi uomini non si accorsero di nulla fino al mattino, perché continuavano a vedere il bagliore dei fuochi.
30 Then Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they were gone over the river Eleutherus.	30 Giònata allora si diede a inseguirli, ma non poté raggiungerli, perché avevano passato il fiume Elèutero.
31 Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians, who were called Zabadeans, and smote them, and took their spoils.	31 Giònata allora piegò sugli Arabi chiamati Zabadei, li assalì e si impadronì delle loro spoglie.
32 And removing thence, he came to Damascus, and so passed through all the country,	32 Poi ripartì e andò a Damasco, e si diede a percorrere tutto il paese.
33 Simon also went forth, and passed through the country unto Ascalon, and the holds there adjoining, from whence he turned aside to Joppa, and won it.	33 Anche Simone fece una spedizione, marciando fino ad Àscalon e ai vicini posti di guarnigione, poi piegò su Giaffa e la conquistò:
34 For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius' part; wherefore he set a garrison there to keep it.	34 aveva sentito infatti che avevano intenzione di consegnare la fortezza ai partigiani di Demetrio; perciò vi pose una guarnigione per presidiarla.
35 After this came Jonathan home again, and calling the elders of the people together, he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea,	35 Quando Giònata fu di ritorno, radunò in assemblea gli anziani del popolo e deliberò con loro di costruire fortezze in Giudea,
36 And making the walls of Jerusalem higher, and raising a great mount between the tower and the city, for to separate it from the city, that so it might be alone, that men might neither sell nor buy in it.	36 di sopraelevare le mura di Gerusalemme e di alzare una grande barriera tra la città e la Cittadella per separare questa dalla città, affinché fosse isolata, così che non potessero più né comperare né vendere.
37 Upon this they came together to build up the city, forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was fallen down, and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha.	37 Si organizzarono dunque per ricostruire la città e, poiché era rovinata parte del muro sul torrente dal lato orientale, Giònata allestì il cosiddetto Cafenatà.
38 Simon also set up Adida in Sephela, and made it strong with gates and bars.	38 Simone a sua volta ricostruì Adidà nella Sefela, fortificandola e applicandovi porte e sbarre.
39 Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia, and to kill Antiochus the king, that he might set the crown upon his own head.	39 Intanto Trifone cercava di diventare re dell’Asia, cingere la corona e stendere la mano contro il re Antioco,
40 Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him, and that he would fight against him; wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan, that he might kill him. So he removed, and came to Bethsan.	40 ma sospettava che Giònata glielo impedisse e, nel caso, gli muovesse guerra. Perciò cercava di averlo nelle mani e di eliminarlo; si mosse dunque e venne a Bet-Sean.
41 Then Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for the battle, and came to Bethsan.	41 Giònata gli uscì incontro con quarantamila uomini scelti e inquadrati e venne a Bet-Sean.
42 Now when Tryphon saw Jonathan came with so great a force, he durst not stretch his hand against him;	42 Trifone, vedendo che era venuto con un numeroso esercito, si guardò bene dal mettergli le mani addosso.
43 But received him honourably, and commended him unto all his friends, and gave him gifts, and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him, as to himself.	43 Anzi lo ricevette con molti onori, lo presentò a tutti i suoi amici, gli offrì doni e ordinò ai suoi amici e alle sue truppe di obbedirgli come a lui stesso.
44 Unto Jonathan also he said, Why hast thou brought all this people to so great trouble, seeing there is no war betwixt us?	44 Disse a Giònata: «Perché mai hai disturbato tutta questa gente, non essendoci guerra tra noi?
45 Therefore send them now home again, and choose a few men to wait on thee, and come thou with me to Ptolemais, for I will give it thee, and the rest of the strong holds and forces, and all that have any charge: as for me, I will return and depart: for this is the cause of my coming.	45 Su, rimandali alle loro case; scegliti pochi uomini che ti accompagnino e vieni con me a Tolemàide. Io te la consegnerò insieme con le altre fortezze e il resto dell’esercito e tutti i funzionari, poi tornerò indietro e partirò: sono venuto appunto per questo».
46 So Jonathan believing him did as he bade him, and sent away his host, who went into the land of Judea.	46 Giònata si fidò di lui, fece quanto aveva detto e rimandò le truppe che tornarono nella Giudea.
47 And with himself he retained but three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.	47 Trattenne con sé tremila uomini, di cui duemila li lasciò in Galilea e mille andarono con lui.
48 Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates and took him, and all them that came with him they slew with the sword.	48 Ma appena Giònata fu entrato in Tolemàide, i cittadini chiusero le porte, lo catturarono e passarono a fil di spada quanti erano entrati con lui.
49 Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain, to destroy all Jonathan's company.	49 Trifone mandò poi truppe e cavalleria in Galilea e nella grande pianura per sterminare tutti gli uomini di Giònata.
50 But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain, they encouraged one another; and went close together, prepared to fight.	50 Ma costoro, avendo saputo che era stato catturato e che era ormai perduto insieme a quelli che erano con lui, incoraggiatisi l’un l’altro, si presentarono inquadrati, pronti alla battaglia.
51 They therefore that followed upon them, perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives, turned back again.	51 Gli inseguitori li videro decisi a difendere la loro vita e tornarono indietro.
52 Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably, and there they bewailed Jonathan, and them that were with him, and they were sore afraid; wherefore all Israel made great lamentation.	52 Così tutti giunsero senza molestie in Giudea; piansero per Giònata e per quelli della sua scorta e furono presi da grande timore. Tutto Israele si immerse in un lutto profondo.
53 Then all the heathen that were round about then sought to destroy them: for said they, They have no captain, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away their memorial from among men.	53 Tutte le nazioni intorno a loro cercarono subito di sterminarli, dicendo appunto: «Non hanno più né capo né sostegno: scendiamo ora in guerra contro di loro e così cancelleremo dagli uomini il loro ricordo».
