1 In the hundred and sixtieth year Alexander, the son of Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, went up and took Ptolemais: for the people had received him, by means whereof he reigned there,	1 El año ciento sesenta, Alejandro, hijo de Antíoco, por sobrenombre Epífanes, desembarcó y ocupó Tolemaida, donde fue bien recibido y comenzó a reinar.
2 Now when king Demetrius heard thereof, he gathered together an exceeding great host, and went forth against him to fight.	2 Enterado de esto, el rey Demetrio reclutó un ejército muy numeroso y salió a su encuentro para combatirlo.
3 Moreover Demetrius sent letters unto Jonathan with loving words, so as he magnified him.	3 Además, Demetrio envió a Jonatán una carta amistosa, dándole mayores poderes,
4 For said he, Let us first make peace with him, before he join with Alexander against us:	4 haciéndose esta reflexión: «Anticipémonos a negociar la paz con él antes que él la haga con Alejandro en detrimento nuestro,
5 Else he will remember all the evils that we have done against him, and against his brethren and his people.	5 acordándose de los males que le causamos a él, a sus hermanos y a su nación».
6 Wherefore he gave him authority to gather together an host, and to provide weapons, that he might aid him in battle: he commanded also that the hostages that were in the tower should be delivered him.	6 Demetrio le dio autorización para reclutar tropas, fabricar armamentos y ser su aliado. También ordenó que le entregaran los rehenes detenidos en la Ciudadela.
7 Then came Jonathan to Jerusalem, and read the letters in the audience of all the people, and of them that were in the tower:	7 Jonatán fue a Jerusalén y leyó la carta en presencia de todo el pueblo y de los que ocupaban la Ciudadela.
8 Who were sore afraid, when they heard that the king had given him authority to gather together an host.	8 Estos últimos quedaron muy atemorizados cuando supieron que el rey lo había autorizado para reclutar tropas, y
9 Whereupon they of the tower delivered their hostages unto Jonathan, and he delivered them unto their parents.	9 los de la Ciudadela entregaron los rehenes a Jonatán, el cual los devolvió a sus familias.
10 This done, Jonathan settled himself in Jerusalem, and began to build and repair the city.	10 Jonatán fijó su residencia en Jerusalén y comenzó a reconstruir y restaurar la ciudad.
11 And he commanded the workmen to build the walls and the mount Sion and about with square stones for fortification; and they did so.	11 Ordenó a los constructores que reconstruyeran las murallas y que rodearan el monte Sión con un muro de piedras talladas, y así lo hicieron.
12 Then the strangers, that were in the fortresses which Bacchides had built, fled away;	12 Los extranjeros que ocupaban las fortalezas levantadas por Báquides, huyeron,
13 Insomuch as every man left his place, and went into his own country.	13 abandonando cada uno su puesto para regresar a su país.
14 Only at Bethsura certain of those that had forsaken the law and the commandments remained still: for it was their place of refuge.	14 Sólo en Betsur quedaron algunos de los que habían renegado de la Ley y de los mandamientos, porque esa era una ciudad de refugio.
15 Now when king Alexander had heard what promises Demetrius had sent unto Jonathan: when also it was told him of the battles and noble acts which he and his brethren had done, and of the pains that they had endured,	15 El rey Alejandro se enteró de los ofrecimientos que Demetrio había hecho a Jonatán. También le contaron las guerras y las proezas que él y sus hermanos habían realizado y las contrariedades que habían soportado.
16 He said, Shall we find such another man? now therefore we will make him our friend and confederate.	16 Entonces exclamó: «¿Podremos hallar otro hombre como este? ¡Hagámoslo ahora mismo nuestro amigo y nuestro aliado!».
17 Upon this he wrote a letter, and sent it unto him, according to these words, saying,	17 Y en seguida le envió una carta redactada en los siguientes términos:
18 King Alexander to his brother Jonathan sendeth greeting:	18 «El rey Alejandro saluda a su hermano Jonatán.
19 We have heard of thee, that thou art a man of great power, and meet to be our friend.	19 Hemos oído que eres un guerrero valiente y digno de nuestra amistad.
20 Wherefore now this day we ordain thee to be the high priest of thy nation, and to be called the king's friend; (and therewithal he sent him a purple robe and a crown of gold:) and require thee to take our part, and keep friendship with us.	20 Por eso te nombramos hoy Sumo Sacerdote de tu nación y te concedemos el título de Amigo del rey para que apoyes nuestra causa y nos asegures tu amistad». Al mismo tiempo, le enviaba una capa de púrpura y una corona de oro.
21 So in the seventh month of the hundred and sixtieth year, at the feast of the tabernacles, Jonathan put on the holy robe, and gathered together forces, and provided much armour.	21 Jonatán se revistió de los ornamentos sagrados el séptimo mes del año ciento sesenta, en la fiesta de las Chozas; reclutó tropas y fabricó una gran cantidad de armas.
22 Whereof when Demetrius heard, he was very sorry, and said,	22 Apenas supo esto, Demetrio se disgustó mucho y dijo:
23 What have we done, that Alexander hath prevented us in making amity with the Jews to strengthen himself?	23 «¿Qué hemos hecho? Alejandro se nos ha adelantado, ganándose la amistad y el apoyo de los judíos.
24 I also will write unto them words of encouragement, and promise them dignities and gifts, that I may have their aid.	24 También yo voy a escribirles en términos persuasivos, ofreciéndoles dignidades y regalos, para que se comprometan a ayudarme».
25 He sent unto them therefore to this effect: King Demetrius unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:	25 Y les escribió en estos términos:
26 Whereas ye have kept covenants with us, and continued in our friendship, not joining yourselves with our enemies, we have heard hereof, and are glad.	26 «El rey Demetrio saluda a la nación de los judíos. Nos hemos enterado con satisfacción de que ustedes han observado los pactos hechos con nosotros y han perseverado en nuestra amistad, sin pasarse al enemigo.
27 Wherefore now continue ye still to be faithful unto us, and we will well recompense you for the things ye do in our behalf,	27 Continúen guardándonos la misma fidelidad y nosotros los recompensaremos a cambio de la colaboración que nos prestan.
28 And will grant you many immunities, and give you rewards.	28 Los eximiremos de muchas obligaciones y les haremos regalos.
29 And now do I free you, and for your sake I release all the Jews, from tributes, and from the customs of salt, and from crown taxes,	29 Y desde ahora, los libero a ustedes, y eximo a todos los judíos, de las contribuciones, del impuesto a la sal y de la entrega de las coronas de oro.
30 And from that which appertaineth unto me to receive for the third part or the seed, and the half of the fruit of the trees, I release it from this day forth, so that they shall not be taken of the land of Judea, nor of the three governments which are added thereunto out of the country of Samaria and Galilee, from this day forth for evermore.	30 Renuncio también, a partir de hoy y para siempre, a percibir el tercio de los granos y la mitad de los frutos de los árboles que me corresponden, tanto de Judá como de los tres distritos anexos de Samaría y Galilea.
31 Let Jerusalem also be holy and free, with the borders thereof, both from tenths and tributes.	31 Jerusalén, con su territorio, sus diezmos y derechos, será sagrada y estará exenta de impuestos.
32 And as for the tower which is at Jerusalem, I yield up authority over it, and give the high priest, that he may set in it such men as he shall choose to keep it.	32 Renuncio asimismo a toda autoridad sobre la Ciudadela de Jerusalén y se la cedo al Sumo Sacerdote, a fin de que establezca en ella a todos los hombres que él mismo elija para su defensa.
33 Moreover I freely set at liberty every one of the Jews, that were carried captives out of the land of Judea into any part of my kingdom, and I will that all my officers remit the tributes even of their cattle.	33 A todo judío llevado cautivo de Judá a cualquier parte de mi reino, le concedo la libertad gratuitamente, y ninguno estará obligado a pagar impuestos, ni siquiera los del ganado.
34 Furthermore I will that all the feasts, and sabbaths, and new moons, and solemn days, and the three days before the feast, and the three days after the feast shall be all of immunity and freedom for all the Jews in my realm.	34 Todas las fiestas, los sábados, los novilunios y los días fijados para las solemnidades –con los tres días que preceden y siguen a cada fiesta –serán días de inmunidad y exención para todos los judíos residentes en mi reino:
35 Also no man shall have authority to meddle with or to molest any of them in any matter.	35 nadie tendrá derecho a demandar o inquietar a ninguno de ellos por ningún motivo.
36 I will further, that there be enrolled among the king's forces about thirty thousand men of the Jews, unto whom pay shall be given, as belongeth to all king's forces.	36 En los ejércitos del rey se alistarán hasta treinta mil judíos que percibirán el mismo sueldo que las demás tropas del rey.
37 And of them some shall be placed in the king's strong holds, of whom also some shall be set over the affairs of the kingdom, which are of trust: and I will that their overseers and governors be of themselves, and that they live after their own laws, even as the king hath commanded in the land of Judea.	37 Algunos de ellos serán apostados en las principales fortalezas del rey y otros ocuparán cargos de confianza en el reino. Sus jefes y oficiales serán elegidos entre ellos y todos podrán vivir conforme a sus leyes, tal como lo ha dispuesto el rey para el país de Judá.
38 And concerning the three governments that are added to Judea from the country of Samaria, let them be joined with Judea, that they may be reckoned to be under one, nor bound to obey other authority than the high priest's.	38 Los tres distritos de la provincia de Samaría, incorporados a Judea, quedarán anexados definitivamente a ella y considerados como parte suya, de manera que dependan de un solo jefe y no estén sometidos a otra autoridad que la del Sumo Sacerdote.
39 As for Ptolemais, and the land pertaining thereto, I give it as a free gift to the sanctuary at Jerusalem for the necessary expences of the sanctuary.	39 Doy como presente al Templo de Jerusalén la ciudad de Tolemaida y sus alrededores, para cubrir las expensas del Santuario.
40 Moreover I give every year fifteen thousand shekels of silver out of the king's accounts from the places appertaining.	40 Por mi parte, daré cada año quince mil siclos de plata, que se tomarán de los ingresos del rey en los lugares apropiados.
41 And all the overplus, which the officers payed not in as in former time, from henceforth shall be given toward the works of the temple.	41 Toda la cantidad que los agentes del fisco han dejado de pagar, como se hacía en los años precedentes, será entregada desde ahora para las obras del Templo.
42 And beside this, the five thousand shekels of silver, which they took from the uses of the temple out of the accounts year by year, even those things shall be released, because they appertain to the priests that minister.	42 Además, los cinco mil siclos de plata que se solían recaudar cada año de los ingresos del Santuario quedarán condonados en beneficio de los sacerdotes que ejercen el culto.
43 And whosoever they be that flee unto the temple at Jerusalem, or be within the liberties hereof, being indebted unto the king, or for any other matter, let them be at liberty, and all that they have in my realm.	43 Todos aquellos que por una deuda al Tesoro real y por cualquier otra causa se refugien en el Templo de Jerusalén o en alguna de sus dependencias, quedarán absueltos, ellos con las posesiones que tengan en mi reino.
44 For the building also and repairing of the works of the sanctuary expences shall be given of the king's accounts.	44 Los gastos para las obras de construcción y reparación del Santuario, correrán por cuenta del rey.
45 Yea, and for the building of the walls of Jerusalem, and the fortifying thereof round about, expences shall be given out of the king's accounts, as also for the building of the walls in Judea.	45 También estarán a cargo del rey la construcción de las murallas de Jerusalén y la fortificación de su recinto, lo mismo que la reconstrucción de las murallas en las ciudades de Judea».
46 Now when Jonathan and the people heard these words, they gave no credit unto them, nor received them, because they remembered the great evil that he had done in Israel; for he had afflicted them very sore.	46 Cuando Jonatán y el pueblo oyeron estas palabras, no les dieron crédito ni las aceptaron, porque se acordaban del enorme daño que Demetrio había causado a Israel y de la opresión a que los había sometido.
47 But with Alexander they were well pleased, because he was the first that entreated of true peace with them, and they were confederate with him always.	47 Entonces se decidieron por Alejandro porque, a su parecer, les hacía mejores propuestas de paz, y fueron siempre sus aliados.
48 Then gathered king Alexander great forces, and camped over against Demetrius.	48 El rey Alejandro reunió un gran ejército y tomó posiciones contra Demetrio.
49 And after the two kings had joined battle, Demetrius' host fled: but Alexander followed after him, and prevailed against them.	49 Ambos reyes entablaron batalla, y el ejército de Alejandro emprendió la retirada. Demetrio los persiguió y se impuso sobre ellos.
50 And he continued the battle very sore until the sun went down: and that day was Demetrius slain.	50 Y aunque combatió encarnizadamente hasta la puesta del sol, Demetrio sucumbió aquel día.
51 Afterward Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemee king of Egypt with a message to this effect:	51 Alejandro mandó una embajada a Tolomeo, rey de Egipto, con este mensaje.
52 Forasmuch as I am come again to my realm, and am set in the throne of my progenitors, and have gotten the dominion, and overthrown Demetrius, and recovered our country;	52 «Yo he vuelto a mi reino, y me he sentado en el trono de mis padres, adueñándome del poder. Después de derrotar a Demetrio, he tomado posesión de mi país,
53 For after I had joined battle with him, both he and his host was discomfited by us, so that we sit in the throne of his kingdom:	53 porque combatí con él, lo derroté, a él y a su ejército, y ocupé su trono real.
54 Now therefore let us make a league of amity together, and give me now thy daughter to wife: and I will be thy son in law, and will give both thee and her as according to thy dignity.	54 Establezcamos ahora vínculos de amistad entre nosotros: dame a tu hija por esposa, y yo seré tu yerno, y a ti y a ella les haré regalos dignos de ti».
55 Then Ptolemee the king gave answer, saying, Happy be the day wherein thou didst return into the land of thy fathers, and satest in the throne of their kingdom.	55 El rey Tolomeo respondió en estos términos: «¡Feliz el día en que regresaste al país de tus padres, para sentarte en su trono real!
56 And now will I do to thee, as thou hast written: meet me therefore at Ptolemais, that we may see one another; for I will marry my daughter to thee according to thy desire.	56 Voy a cumplir ahora mismo lo que tú has escrito. Ven hasta Tolemaida para que nos entrevistemos, y yo seré tu suegro como tú lo has dicho».
57 So Ptolemee went out of Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra, and they came unto Ptolemais in the hundred threescore and second year:	57 Tolomeo partió de Egipto con su hija Cleopatra y llegó a Tolemaida, el año ciento sesenta y dos.
58 Where king Alexander meeting him, he gave unto him his daughter Cleopatra, and celebrated her marriage at Ptolemais with great glory, as the manner of kings is.	58 El rey Alejandro fue a su encuentro, y Tolomeo le entregó a su hija Cleopatra, celebrándose la boda en Tolemaida con la magnificencia propia de los reyes.
59 Now king Alexander had written unto Jonathan, that he should come and meet him.	59 Luego Alejandro escribió a Jonatán para que fuera a entrevistarse con él.
60 Who thereupon went honourably to Ptolemais, where he met the two kings, and gave them and their friends silver and gold, and many presents, and found favour in their sight.	60 Este fue a Tolemaida con gran pompa; allí se entrevistó con los dos reyes y los obsequió con plata y oro, ofreciendo además numerosos presentes a sus Amigos. De esa manera se ganó el favor de ellos.
61 At that time certain pestilent fellows of Israel, men of a wicked life, assembled themselves against him, to accuse him: but the king would not hear them.	61 Entonces un grupo de prevaricadores, la gente más indeseable de Israel, se confabularon contra él y lo acusaron ante el rey. Pero este, en lugar de hacerles caso,
62 Yea more than that, the king commanded to take off his garments, and clothe him in purple: and they did so.	62 ordenó que quitaran a Jonatán la ropa que tenía puesta y lo vistieran de púrpura. Así lo hicieron.
63 And he made him sit by himself, and said into his princes, Go with him into the midst of the city, and make proclamation, that no man complain against him of any matter, and that no man trouble him for any manner of cause.	63 El rey lo hizo sentar a su lado y dijo a sus dignatarios: «Recorran con él la ciudad y proclamen que nadie se atreva a levantar ninguna acusación contra él ni a molestarlo por ningún motivo».
64 Now when his accusers saw that he was honored according to the proclamation, and clothed in purple, they fled all away.	64 Apenas sus detractores vieron los honores que le tributaban, los términos de la proclama y la púrpura con que estaba revestido, se dieron a la fuga.
65 So the king honoured him, and wrote him among his chief friends, and made him a duke, and partaker of his dominion.	65 El rey lo honró inscribiéndolo entre sus principales Amigos, y lo constituyó general y gobernador.
66 Afterward Jonathan returned to Jerusalem with peace and gladness.	66 Así Jonatán regresó a Jerusalén en paz y lleno de alegría.
67 Furthermore in the; hundred threescore and fifth year came Demetrius son of Demetrius out of Crete into the land of his fathers:	67 El año ciento sesenta y cinco, Demetrio, hijo de Demetrio, llegó al país de sus padres, procedente de Creta,
68 Whereof when king Alexander heard tell, he was right sorry, and returned into Antioch.	68 y Alejandro, muy contrariado por esta noticia regresó a Antioquía.
69 Then Demetrius made Apollonius the governor of Celosyria his general, who gathered together a great host, and camped in Jamnia, and sent unto Jonathan the high priest, saying,	69 Demetrio designó general a Apolonio, el gobernador de la Celesiria, y este reclutó un numeroso ejército y acampó en Iamnia, enviando a decir al Sumo Sacerdote Jonatán:
70 Thou alone liftest up thyself against us, and I am laughed to scorn for thy sake, and reproached: and why dost thou vaunt thy power against us in the mountains?	70 «Tú eres el único que te rebelas contra nosotros, y a causa de ti, yo soy objeto de burla y de desprecio. ¿Por qué usas de tu autoridad contra nosotros en las montañas?
71 Now therefore, if thou trustest in thine own strength, come down to us into the plain field, and there let us try the matter together: for with me is the power of the cities.	71 Si realmente confías en tus tropas, baja ahora a medirte con nosotros en la llanura, porque yo cuento con las tropas de las ciudades.
72 Ask and learn who I am, and the rest that take our part, and they shall tell thee that thy foot is not able to to flight in their own land.	72 Averigua, y sabrás quién soy yo y quiénes son los que nos ayudan: ellos dicen que ustedes no pueden resistirnos, ya que dos veces fueron derrotados tus padres en su propio país.
73 Wherefore now thou shalt not be able to abide the horsemen and so great a power in the plain, where is neither stone nor flint, nor place to flee unto.	73 Ahora no podrás enfrentar a la caballería y a un ejército tan grande en esta llanura, donde no hay una piedra, ni una roca, ni un sitio donde refugiarse».
74 So when Jonathan heard these words of Apollonius, he was moved in his mind, and choosing ten thousand men he went out of Jerusalem, where Simon his brother met him for to help him.	74 Cuando Jonatán escuchó el mensaje de Apolonio, se turbó profundamente. Entonces eligió a diez mil hombres y salió de Jerusalén. Su hermano Simón se unió a él para ayudarlo.
75 And he pitched his tents against Joppa: but; they of Joppa shut him out of the city, because Apollonius had a garrison there.	75 Luego acampó frente a Jope, pero los habitantes de la ciudad le cerraron las puertas porque allí había una guarnición de Apolonio. Apenas comenzó el ataque,
76 Then Jonathan laid siege unto it: whereupon they of the city let him in for fear: and so Jonathan won Joppa.	76 los habitantes de la ciudad, aterrorizados, le abrieron las puertas, y así Jonatán se adueñó de Jope.
77 Whereof when Apollonius heard, he took three thousand horsemen, with a great host of footmen, and went to Azotus as one that journeyed, and therewithal drew him forth into the plain. because he had a great number of horsemen, in whom he put his trust.	77 Al enterarse de esto, Apolonio puso en pie de guerra tres mil jinetes y una numerosa infantería, y partió en dirección a Azoto, como si fuera de paso; pero al mismo tiempo se iba adentrando en la llanura, confiado en su numerosa caballería.
78 Then Jonathan followed after him to Azotus, where the armies joined battle.	78 Jonatán lo persiguió en dirección a Azoto, y los dos ejércitos entablaron batalla.
79 Now Apollonius had left a thousand horsemen in ambush.	79 Apolonio había dejado mil jinetes ocultos a espaldas de ellos.
80 And Jonathan knew that there was an ambushment behind him; for they had compassed in his host, and cast darts at the people, from morning till evening.	80 Pero Jonatán se dio cuenta de que estaban emboscados detrás de él. Los enemigos rodearon a su ejército, arrojándole flechas durante todo el día.
81 But the people stood still, as Jonathan had commanded them: and so the enemies' horses were tired.	81 Las tropas se mantuvieron firmes, como lo había ordenado Jonatán, mientras que los caballos de los enemigos se cansaron.
82 Then brought Simon forth his host, and set them against the footmen, (for the horsemen were spent) who were discomfited by him, and fled.	82 Entonces Simón hizo avanzar sus escuadrones y atacó a la infantería, porque la caballería estaba extenuada: así los derrotó y los obligó a huir.
83 The horsemen also, being scattered in the field, fled to Azotus, and went into Bethdagon, their idol's temple, for safety.	83 La caballería se desbandó por la llanura, y los fugitivos huyeron a Azoto y entraron en la Casa de Dagón, el templo de su ídolo, para ponerse a salvo.
84 But Jonathan set fire on Azotus, and the cities round about it, and took their spoils; and the temple of Dagon, with them that were fled into it, he burned with fire.	84 Jonatán incendió a Azoto y a las ciudades vecinas y se apoderó del botín. También incendió el templo de Dagón, con todos los que se habían refugiado en él.
85 Thus there were burned and slain with the sword well nigh eight thousand men.	85 Los que perecieron por la espada o por el fuego fueron unos ocho mil hombres.
86 And from thence Jonathan removed his host, and camped against Ascalon, where the men of the city came forth, and met him with great pomp.	86 Luego Jonatán partió de allí y acampó frente a Ascalón, cuyos habitantes salieron a recibirlo con grandes honores.
87 After this returned Jonathan and his host unto Jerusalem, having any spoils.	87 Después regresó con su gente a Jerusalén, llevando consigo un gran botín.
88 Now when king ALexander heard these things, he honoured Jonathan yet more.	88 Cuando el rey Alejandro se enteró de todo esto, concedió nuevos honores a Jonatán;
89 And sent him a buckle of gold, as the use is to be given to such as are of the king's blood: he gave him also Accaron with the borders thereof in possession.	89 le envió un prendedor de oro, como se acostumbra conceder a los parientes de los reyes, y le dio en propiedad Acarón con todo su reino.
