1 Now at that time Judith heard thereof, which was the daughter of Merari, the son of Ox, the son of Joseph, the son of Ozel, the son of Elcia, the son of Ananias, the son of Gedeon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Acitho, the son of Eliu, the son of Eliab, the son of Nathanael, the son of Samael, the son of Salasadal, the son of Israel.	1 In quei giorni venne a conoscenza di questi fatti Giuditta, figlia di Merari, figlio di Oks, figlio di Giuseppe, figlio di Oziel, figlio di Elkia, figlio di Anania, figlio di Gedeone, figlio di Rafain, figlio di Achitob, figlio di Elia, figlio di Chelkia, figlio di Eliàb, figlio di Natanaèl, figlio di Salamiel, figlio di Sarasadai, figlio d'Israele.
2 And Manasses was her husband, of her tribe and kindred, who died in the barley harvest.	2 Suo marito era stato Manasse, della stessa tribù e della stessa famiglia di lei; egli era morto al tempo della mietitura dell'orzo.
3 For as he stood overseeing them that bound sheaves in the field, the heat came upon his head, and he fell on his bed, and died in the city of Bethulia: and they buried him with his fathers in the field between Dothaim and Balamo.	3 Stava infatti sorvegliando quelli che legavano i covoni nella campagna, quando fu colpito da un'insolazione al capo; dovette adagiarsi sul letto e morì in Betulia, sua città. Lo seppellirono con i suoi padri nel campo tra Dotain e Balamon.
4 So Judith was a widow in her house three years and four months.	4 Giuditta, rimasta vedova, viveva nella sua casa da tre anni e quattro mesi.
5 And she made her a tent upon the top of her house, and put on sackcloth upon her loins and ware her widow's apparel.	5 Si era fatta costruire una tenda sul terrazzo della propria casa, aveva cinto i suoi fianchi di sacco e portava gli abiti della vedovanza.
6 And she fasted all the days of her widowhood, save the eves of the sabbaths, and the sabbaths, and the eves of the new moons, and the new moons and the feasts and solemn days of the house of Israel.	6 Digiunava tutti i giorni, da quando era vedova, eccettuate le vigilie dei sabati e i sabati, le vigilie dei noviluni e i noviluni, le feste e i giorni di letizia per il popolo d'Israele.
7 She was also of a goodly countenance, and very beautiful to behold: and her husband Manasses had left her gold, and silver, and menservants and maidservants, and cattle, and lands; and she remained upon them.	7 Era bella d'aspetto e molto avvenente a vederla e suo marito Manasse le aveva lasciato oro e argento, servi e ancelle, bestiame e terreni; essa dimorava in mezzo a tutto questo.
8 And there was none that gave her an ill word; ar she feared God greatly.	8 Non c'era nessuno che potesse dir male sul suo conto, perché temeva grandemente Dio.
9 Now when she heard the evil words of the people against the governor, that they fainted for lack of water; for Judith had heard all the words that Ozias had spoken unto them, and that he had sworn to deliver the city unto the Assyrians after five days;	9 Ella dunque venne a conoscenza delle esasperate parole che il popolo aveva rivolto ai capi, perché s'erano scoraggiati per la penuria d'acqua, e venne pure a conoscere tutte le risposte che aveva dato loro Ozia, come egli avesse giurato loro di consegnare la città agli Assiri dopo cinque giorni.
10 Then she sent her waitingwoman, that had the government of all things that she had, to call Ozias and Chabris and Charmis, the ancients of the city.	10 Allora mandò la sua ancella preposta all'amministrazione di tutte le sue sostanze a chiamare Cabri e Carmi, gli anziani della sua città.
11 And they came unto her, and she said unto them, Hear me now, O ye governors of the inhabitants of Bethulia: for your words that ye have spoken before the people this day are not right, touching this oath which ye made and pronounced between God and you, and have promised to deliver the city to our enemies, unless within these days the Lord turn to help you.	11 Giunti che furono presso di lei, disse loro: "Ascoltatemi, o capi degli abitanti di Betulia! Non è stato opportuno il discorso che avete fatto oggi davanti al popolo, interponendo questo giuramento pronunciato tra Dio e voi di consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, se nel frattempo il Signore non vi viene in aiuto.
12 And now who are ye that have tempted God this day, and stand instead of God among the children of men?	12 Ora, chi siete voi, che avete tentato Dio in mezzo ai figli degli uomini?
13 And now try the Lord Almighty, but ye shall never know any thing.	13 Ora voi volete mettere alla prova il Signore onnipotente, ma non comprenderete nulla mai.
14 For ye cannot find the depth of the heart of man, neither can ye perceive the things that he thinketh: then how can ye search out God, that hath made all these things, and know his mind, or comprehend his purpose? Nay, my brethren, provoke not the Lord our God to anger.	14 Se non siete capaci di scrutare la profondità del cuore dell'uomo né di afferrare i pensieri della sua mente, come potreste scandagliare Dio, che ha fatto tutto ciò, conoscere la sua mente e comprendere i suoi disegni? No, fratelli, non provocate a ira il Signore nostro Dio.
15 For if he will not help us within these five days, he hath power to defend us when he will, even every day, or to destroy us before our enemies.	15 Se egli non vuole soccorrerci nel periodo di cinque giorni, egli ha il potere di difenderci nei giorni che vuole, come anche di distruggerci in faccia ai nostri nemici.
16 Do not bind the counsels of the Lord our God: for God is not as man, that he may be threatened; neither is he as the son of man, that he should be wavering.	16 Voi però non vogliate ipotecare i disegni del Signore, nostro Dio, perché Dio non è come un uomo cui si possano fare delle minacce, o un figlio d'uomo sul quale si possano esercitare delle pressioni.
17 Therefore let us wait for salvation of him, and call upon him to help us, and he will hear our voice, if it please him.	17 Perciò, attendendo con costanza la salvezza che viene da lui, invochiamolo in nostro aiuto ed esaudirà il nostro grido, se a lui piacerà.
18 For there arose none in our age, neither is there any now in these days neither tribe, nor family, nor people, nor city among us, which worship gods made with hands, as hath been aforetime.	18 Invero, nella nostra generazione non c'è stata né esiste oggi tribù o famiglia o popolo o città tra noi che adori gli dèi fatti da mano d'uomo, come avvenne nei tempi passati.
19 For the which cause our fathers were given to the sword, and for a spoil, and had a great fall before our enemies.	19 Per questo i nostri padri furono abbandonati alla spada e alla devastazione e caddero miseramente al cospetto dei loro nemici.
20 But we know none other god, therefore we trust that he will not dispise us, nor any of our nation.	20 Noi invece non riconosciamo altro Dio all'infuori di lui, onde speriamo che non vorrà disdegnare noi né la nostra nazione.
21 For if we be taken so, all Judea shall lie waste, and our sanctuary shall be spoiled; and he will require the profanation thereof at our mouth.	21 Se noi saremo presi, sarà presa anche l'intera Giudea, sarà saccheggiato il nostro santuario e Dio chiederà conto al nostro sangue di quella profanazione.
22 And the slaughter of our brethren, and the captivity of the country, and the desolation of our inheritance, will he turn upon our heads among the Gentiles, wheresoever we shall be in bondage; and we shall be an offence and a reproach to all them that possess us.	22 L'uccisione dei nostri fratelli, la deportazione del paese, la devastazione della nostra eredità, Dio la farà ricadere sul nostro capo in mezzo alle nazioni pagane, tra le quali diventeremo schiavi; saremo allora motivo di scandalo e di derisione di fronte ai nostri padroni.
23 For our servitude shall not be directed to favour: but the Lord our God shall turn it to dishonour.	23 La nostra schiavitù non si volgerà in benevolenza, ma il Signore Dio nostro la volgerà a nostro disonore.
24 Now therefore, O brethren, let us shew an example to our brethren, because their hearts depend upon us, and the sanctuary, and the house, and the altar, rest upon us.	24 Ora pertanto, fratelli, dimostriamo ai nostri fratelli che da noi dipende la loro vita e che le cose sante, il tempio e l'altare riposano su di noi.
25 Moreover let us give thanks to the Lord our God, which trieth us, even as he did our fathers.	25 Oltre tutto ringraziamo il Signore, nostro Dio, che ci mette alla prova, come già i nostri padri.
26 Remember what things he did to Abraham, and how he tried Isaac, and what happened to Jacob in Mesopotamia of Syria, when he kept the sheep of Laban his mother's brother.	26 Ricordate quanto fece con Abramo, a quante prove sottopose Isacco e quanto avvenne a Giacobbe in Mesopotamia di Siria, quando pascolava le greggi di Labano, suo zio materno.
27 For he hath not tried us in the fire, as he did them, for the examination of their hearts, neither hath he taken vengeance on us: but the Lord doth scourge them that come near unto him, to admonish them.	27 Come li fece passare al crogiolo per scrutare i loro cuori, così non è che vuole vendicarsi di noi, ma è a scopo di correzione che il Signore castiga quelli che gli sono vicino".
28 Then said Ozias to her, All that thou hast spoken hast thou spoken with a good heart, and there is none that may gainsay thy words.	28 Ozia le rispose: "Tutto ciò che hai detto, l'hai proferito con cuore retto e nessuno può contraddire le tue parole.
29 For this is not the first day wherein thy wisdom is manifested; but from the beginning of thy days all the people have known thy understanding, because the disposition of thine heart is good.	29 Perché non da oggi è palese la tua sapienza, ma dall'inizio dei tuoi giorni tutto il popolo riconosce la tua prudenza, così come è nobile l'indole del tuo cuore.
30 But the people were very thirsty, and compelled us to do unto them as we have spoken, and to bring an oath upon ourselves, which we will not break.	30 Ma il popolo soffre tremendamente la sete e ci ha costretto ad agire come noi abbiamo loro promesso e a prendere sopra di noi la responsabilità di un giuramento che non potremo violare.
31 Therefore now pray thou for us, because thou art a godly woman, and the Lord will send us rain to fill our cisterns, and we shall faint no more.	31 Ma ora, prega per noi, perché sei una donna pia, e il Signore invierà la pioggia a riempire le nostre cisterne e noi non verremo meno".
32 Then said Judith unto them, Hear me, and I will do a thing, which shall go throughout all generations to the children of our nation.	32 Giuditta rispose loro: "Ascoltatemi! Compirò un'azione che passerà di generazione in generazione ai figli del nostro popolo.
33 Ye shall stand this night in the gate, and I will go forth with my waitingwoman: and within the days that ye have promised to deliver the city to our enemies the Lord will visit Israel by mine hand.	33 Questa notte voi vi troverete alla porta della città e io uscirò con la mia ancella ed entro i giorni, dopo i quali voi avete promesso di consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, il Signore per mano mia visiterà Israele.
34 But enquire not ye of mine act: for I will not declare it unto you, till the things be finished that I do.	34 Voi però non andate indagando sulla mia impresa, non vi dirò nulla, fino a quando non sarà compiuto ciò che ho in mente di fare".
35 Then said Ozias and the princes unto her, Go in peace, and the Lord God be before thee, to take vengeance on our enemies.	35 Ozia e i capi le risposero: "Va' in pace e il Signore Dio sia con te per far vendetta dei nostri nemici".
36 So they returned from the tent, and went to their wards.	36 E ritiratisi dalla tenda di lei, se ne andarono ai loro posti.
