KING JAMES BIBLEBIBBIA TINTORI
Now the children of Israel, that dwelt in Judea, heard all that Holofernes the chief captain of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians had done to the nations, and after what manner he had spoiled all their temples, and brought them to nought.1 I figli d'Israele che abitavano la terra di Giuda, udite tali cose, ebbero gran paura di vederlo.
Therefore they were exceedingly afraid of him, and were troubled for Jerusalem, and for the temple of the Lord their God:2 Il terrore e lo spavento invase i loro spiriti, e temevano che facesse a Gerusalemme e al tempio del Signore quello che aveva fatto alle altre città e ai loro templi.
For they were newly returned from the captivity, and all the people of Judea were lately gathered together: and the vessels, and the altar, and the house, were sanctified after the profanation.3 Mandarono in tutta la Samaria e nei dintorni fino a Gerico, a occupare tutte le cime dei monti,
Therefore they sent into all the coasts of Samaria, and the villages and to Bethoron, and Belmen, and Jericho, and to Choba, and Esora, and to the valley of Salem:4 e, cinti di mura i loro villaggi, fatte provviste di grano, si prepararono alla guerra.
And possessed themselves beforehand of all the tops of the high mountains, and fortified the villages that were in them, and laid up victuals for the provision of war: for their fields were of late reaped.5 Il sommo sacerdote Eliachim scrisse pure a tutti quelli che abitavano in faccia a Esdrelon, che sta dirimpetto alla gran pianura presso Dotain, e a tutti quelli dei luoghi per dove si poteva passare,
Also Joacim the high priest, which was in those days in Jerusalem, wrote to them that dwelt in Bethulia, and Betomestham, which is over against Esdraelon toward the open country, near to Dothaim,6 che occupassero le alture dei monti pei quali si poteva andare a Gerusalemme, e facessero la guardia ad ogni passo stretto tra le montagne.
Charging them to keep the passages of the hill country: for by them there was an entrance into Judea, and it was easy to stop them that would come up, because the passage was straight, for two men at the most.7 I figli d'Israele eseguirono gli ordini di Eliachim sacerdote del Signore.
And the children of Israel did as Joacim the high priest had commanded them, with the ancients of all the people of Israel, which dwelt at Jerusalem.8 Tutto il popolo con gran perseveranza alzò le grida al Signore; essi e le loro donne umiliarono le loro anime coi digiuni e colle preghiere.
Then every man of Israel cried to God with great fervency, and with great vehemency did they humble their souls:9 I sacerdoti si vestirono di cilicio, i fanciulli si prostrarono per terra davanti al tempio del Signore; anche l'altare del Signore fu coperto di cilicio.
Both they, and their wives and their children, and their cattle, and every stranger and hireling, and their servants bought with money, put sackcloth upon their loins.10 Unanimi gridarono al Signore di non permettere che fossero predati i loro figli, divise le loro mogli, sterminate le loro città, contaminato il loro santuario, e che essi diventassero l'obbrobrio delle nazioni.
Thus every man and women, and the little children, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, fell before the temple, and cast ashes upon their heads, and spread out their sackcloth before the face of the Lord: also they put sackcloth about the altar,11 Allora Eliachim, sommo sacerdote del Signore, percorse tutto Israele a rivolger loro la parola
And cried to the God of Israel all with one consent earnestly, that he would not give their children for a prey, and their wives for a spoil, and the cities of their inheritance to destruction, and the sanctuary to profanation and reproach, and for the nations to rejoice at.12 e a dire: « Sappiate che il Signore esaudirà le vostre preghiere, se sarete perseveranti nei digiuni, nelle orazioni davanti al Signore.
So God heard their prayers, and looked upon their afflictions: for the people fasted many days in all Judea and Jerusalem before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty.13 Ricordatevi di Mosè servo del Signore: egli, non combattendo col ferro, ma pregando, con sante orazioni, prostrò Amalec, il quale confidava nella sua forza, nella sua potenza, nella sua armata, nei suoi scudi, nei suoi carri e nei suoi cavalieri.
And Joacim the high priest, and all the priests that stood before the Lord, and they which ministered unto the Lord, had their loins girt with sackcloth, and offered the daily burnt offerings, with the vows and free gifts of the people,14 Lo stesso sarà di tutti i nemici d'Israele se persevererete in quest'opera da voi incominciata ».
And had ashes on their mitres, and cried unto the Lord with all their power, that he would look upon all the house of Israel graciously.15 Dopo tale esortazione si diedero a pregare il Signore, perseverando nel cospetto del Signore,
tanto che anche quelli i quali offrivano al Signore gli olocausti, offrivano i sacrifizi vestiti di cilicio e colla testa coperta di cenere.
Tutti con tutto il loro cuore pregavano Dio a visitare il suo popolo d'Israele.
