KING JAMES BIBLEBIBLIA
Now after that she had ceased to cry unto the God of Israel, and bad made an end of all these words.1 Acabada su plegaria al Dios de Israel, y dichas todas estas palabras,
She rose where she had fallen down, and called her maid, and went down into the house in the which she abode in the sabbath days, and in her feast days,2 se levantó Judit del suelo, llamó a su sierva y bajando a la casa donde pasaba los sábados y solemnidades,
And pulled off the sackcloth which she had on, and put off the garments of her widowhood, and washed her body all over with water, and anointed herself with precious ointment, and braided the hair of her head, and put on a tire upon it, and put on her garments of gladness, wherewith she was clad during the life of Manasses her husband.3 se quitó el sayal que vestía, se desnudó de sus vestidos de viudez, se baño toda, se ungió con perfumes exquisitos, se compuso la cabellera poniéndose una cinta, y se vistió los vestidos que vestía cuando era feliz, en vida de su marido Manasés.
And she took sandals upon her feet, and put about her her bracelets, and her chains, and her rings, and her earrings, and all her ornaments, and decked herself bravely, to allure the eyes of all men that should see her.4 Se calzó las sandalias, se puso los collares, brazeletes y anillos, sus pendientes y todas sus joyas, y realzó su hermosura cuanto pudo, con ánimo de seducir los ojos de todos los hombres que la viesen.
Then she gave her maid a bottle of wine, and a cruse of oil, and filled a bag with parched corn, and lumps of figs, and with fine bread; so she folded all these things together, and laid them upon her.5 Luego dio a su sierva un odre de vino y un cántaro de aceite, llenó una alforja con harina de cebada, tortas de higos y panes puros, empaquetó las provisiones y se lo entregó igualmente a su sierva.
Thus they went forth to the gate of the city of Bethulia, and found standing there Ozias and the ancients of the city, Chabris and Charmis.6 Luego se dirigieron a la puerta de la ciudad, de Betulia, donde se encontraron con Ozías y con Jabrís y Jarmís, ancianos de la ciudad.
And when they saw her, that her countenance was altered, and her apparel was changed, they wondered at her beauty very greatly, and said unto her.7 Cuando vieron a Judit con el rostro transformado y mudada de vestidos, se quedaron maravillados de su extremada hermosura y le dijeron:
The God, the God of our fathers give thee favour, and accomplish thine enterprizes to the glory of the children of Israel, and to the exaltation of Jerusalem. Then they worshipped God.8 «¡Que el Dios de nuestros padres te haga alcanzar favor y dé cumplimiento a tus designios, para gloria de los hijos de Israel y exaltación de Jerusalén!»
And she said unto them, Command the gates of the city to be opened unto me, that I may go forth to accomplish the things whereof ye have spoken with me.
And when they had done so, Judith went out, she, and her maid with her; and the men of the city looked after her, until she was gone down the mountain, and till she had passed the valley, and could see her no more.10 Así lo hicieron ellos, y salió Judit con su sierva.
Thus they went straight forth in the valley: and the first watch of the Assyrians met her,11 Avanzaron ellas a derecho por el valle, hasta que le salió al encuentro una avanzada de los asirios,
And took her, and asked her, Of what people art thou? and whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she said, I am a woman of the Hebrews, and am fled from them: for they shall be given you to be consumed:12 que la detuvieron y preguntaron: «¿Quién eres? ¿De dónde vienes? ¿A dónde vas?»
And I am coming before Holofernes the chief captain of your army, to declare words of truth; and I will shew him a way, whereby he shall go, and win all the hill country, without losing the body or life of any one of his men.13 Vengo a presentarme ante Holofernes, jefe de vuestro ejército, para hablarle con sinceridad y mostrarle un camino por el que pueda pasar para adueñarse de toda la montaña, sin que perezca ninguno de sus hombres y sin que se pierda una sola vida».
Now when the men heard her words, and beheld her countenance, they wondered greatly at her beauty, and said unto her,14 Oyéndola hablar aquellos hombres, y viendo la admirable hermosura de su rostro, le dijeron:
Thou hast saved thy life, in that thou hast hasted to come down to the presence of our lord: now therefore come to his tent, and some of us shall conduct thee, until they have delivered thee to his hands.15 «Has salvado tu vida con tu decisión de bajar a presentarte ante nuestro señor.
And when thou standest before him, be not afraid in thine heart, but shew unto him according to thy word; and he will entreat thee well.16 Cuando estés en su presencia, no tengas miedo; anúnciale tus propósitos y él se portará bien contigo».
Then they chose out of them an hundred men to accompany her and her maid; and they brought her to the tent of Holofernes.17 Y eligieron entre ellos cien hombres que le dieran escolta a ella y a su sierva y las llevaran hasta la tienda de Holofernes.
Then was there a concourse throughout all the camp: for her coming was noised among the tents, and they came about her, as she stood without the tent of Holofernes, till they told him of her.18 Habiéndose corrido por todas las tiendas la noticia de su llegada, concurrió la gente del campamento, que hicieron corro en torno a ella, mientras esperaba, fuera de la tienda, que la anunciasen a Holofernes.
And they wondered at her beauty, and admired the children of Israel because of her, and every one said to his neighbour, Who would despise this people, that have among them such women? surely it is not good that one man of them be left who being let go might deceive the whole earth.19 Se quedaban admirados de su belleza y, por ella, admiraban a los israelitas, diciéndose unos a otros: «¿Quién puede menospreciar a un pueblo que tiene mujeres como ésta?
And they that lay near Holofernes went out, and all his servants and they brought her into the tent.20 Salieron, pues, los de la escolta personal de Holofernes y todos sus servidores y la introdujeron en la tienda.
Now Holofernes rested upon his bed under a canopy, which was woven with purple, and gold, and emeralds, and precious stones.21 Estaba Holofernes descansando en su lecho, bajo colgaduras de oro y púrpura recamadas de esmeraldas y piedras preciosas.
So they shewed him of her; and he came out before his tent with silver lamps going before him.22 Se la anunciaron y él salió hasta la entrada de la tienda, precedido de lámparas de plata.
And when Judith was come before him and his servants they all marvelled at the beauty of her countenance; and she fell down upon her face, and did reverence unto him: and his servants took her up.23 Cuando Judit llegó ante Holofernes y sus ministros, todos se maravillaron de la hermosura de su rostro.
