1 And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.	1 Ben-Hadad, roi d’Aram, rassembla toute son armée. Il avait avec lui 32 rois, des chevaux et des chars lorsqu’il monta mettre le siège devant Samarie pour s’en emparer.
2 And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,	2 Il envoya des messagers en ville auprès d’Akab, roi d’Israël,
3 Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.	3 pour lui porter ce message: “Ainsi a parlé Ben-Hadad: Ton argent et ton or sont à moi, tes femmes et tes fils sont à moi.”
4 And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.	4 Le roi d’Israël répondit: “Tu as bien dit, mon seigneur le roi, je suis à toi avec tout ce qui m’appartient.”
5 And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;	5 Mais les messagers vinrent de nouveau; ils dirent à Akab de la part de Ben-Hadad: “Si je t’ai dit: Tu me donneras ton or et ton argent, tes femmes et tes fils,
6 Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.	6 sois bien sûr que demain à pareille heure j’enverrai mes serviteurs chez toi. Ils fouilleront ta maison et les maisons de tes serviteurs, et tout ce qui leur plaira, ils le ramasseront et l’emporteront.”
7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.	7 Alors le roi d’Israël rassembla les anciens du pays et leur dit: “Regardez, il est évident que celui-là nous veut du mal. Quand il m’a réclamé mes femmes et mes fils, mon argent et mon or, je ne lui ai rien refusé.”
8 And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.	8 Tous les anciens et tout le peuple lui dirent: “Ne l’écoute pas! Il ne faut pas accepter.”
9 Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.	9 Alors il dit aux messagers de Ben-Hadad: “Dites ceci à mon seigneur le roi: Ce que tu m’as demandé la première fois, je le ferai, mais je ne peux accepter cette nouvelle exigence.” Les messagers partirent et rapportèrent sa réponse.
10 And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.	10 Alors Ben-Hadad lui envoya dire: “Que les dieux me maudissent et me maudissent encore s’il y a assez de poussière dans Samarie pour que chacun de mes combattants puisse en remplir le creux de sa main.”
11 And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.	11 Le roi d’Israël répondit aux messagers: “Vous direz à votre maître que celui qui prend son épée ne doit pas se vanter comme celui qui la repose!”
12 And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions,that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.	12 L’autre était en train de boire avec les rois sous les tentes quand on lui rapporta cette parole; il dit à ses serviteurs: “Prenez vos postes de combat!” Et ils prirent position contre la ville.
13 And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it in to thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.	13 À ce moment un prophète s’avança vers le roi d’Israël et lui dit: “Écoute cette parole de Yahvé: Vois-tu cette grande armée? Moi, aujourd’hui, je la livre entre tes mains et tu sauras que je suis Yahvé.”
14 And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.	14 Akab lui dit: “Qui fera ce travail?” Il répondit: “Yahvé a dit: Les jeunes des chefs de provinces.” Akab reprit la parole: “Qui engagera le combat?” Il répondit: “Toi.”
15 Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.	15 Akab passa en revue les jeunes des chefs de provinces, ils étaient 232. Il passa ensuite en revue tout le peuple, tous les Israélites: ils étaient 7 000.
16 And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.	16 À l’heure de midi, ils firent une sortie quand Ben-Hadad était en train de s’enivrer sous les tentes avec les 32 rois venus avec lui.
17 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.	17 Les jeunes des chefs de provinces sortirent d’abord. On le fit savoir à Ben-Hadad: “Des hommes sont sortis de Samarie.”
18 And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.	18 Il répondit: “Qu’ils soient sortis pour combattre ou pour demander la paix, faites-les prisonniers!”
19 So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.	19 Mais derrière les jeunes des chefs de provinces, c’est toute l’armée qui sortit de la ville.
20 And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.	20 Ils abattirent chacun son homme, les Araméens tournèrent le dos et Israël se lança à leur poursuite. Ben-Hadad roi d’Aram sauta sur un cheval et prit la fuite avec ses cavaliers.
21 And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.	21 Le roi d’Israël sortit, il ramassa les chevaux et les chars et il infligea à Aram une grande défaite.
22 And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thy self, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.	22 Alors le prophète s’avança vers le roi d’Israël et lui dit: “Renforce-toi et prends tes dispositions, car au début de l’an prochain le roi d’Aram viendra de nouveau t’attaquer.”
23 And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.	23 De leur côté, les conseillers du roi d’Aram lui dirent: “Les dieux d’Israël sont des dieux des montagnes, c’est pourquoi ils ont été plus forts que nous. Mais attirons-les dans la plaine, et nous aurons sûrement le dessus.
24 And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:	24 Par ailleurs, fais ceci: enlève leur poste à tous ces rois, et mets à leur place des gouverneurs.
25 And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.	25 Tu vas réunir une armée aussi nombreuse que celle que tu as perdue, avec autant de chevaux et autant de chars, et nous les combattrons dans la plaine: nous aurons sûrement le dessus.” Le roi suivit donc leur conseil.
26 And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.	26 Au début de l’année suivante, Ben-Hadad passa en revue les Araméens et monta vers Afek pour combattre Israël.
27 And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.	27 On passa aussi les Israélites en revue, ils reçurent des vivres et s’avancèrent à la rencontre des Araméens. Les Israélites campèrent en face d’eux comme deux troupeaux de chèvres, alors que les Araméens remplissaient le pays.
28 And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.	28 Un homme de Dieu s’avança à ce moment et dit au roi d’Israël: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé: Les Araméens prétendent que Yahvé est un dieu des montagnes et non pas un dieu de la plaine; pour cette raison je vais livrer toute cette grande armée entre tes mains, et vous saurez que je suis Yahvé.”
29 And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.	29 Ils campèrent sept jours les uns en face des autres; le septième jour on engagea la bataille et les Israélites tuèrent aux Araméens 100 000 fantassins en un seul jour.
30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.	30 Ceux qui restaient se réfugièrent dans la ville d’Afek, mais la muraille tomba sur les 27 000 qui restaient. Ben-Hadad s’était enfui et il allait dans la ville de maison en maison.
31 And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.	31 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: “Nous avons entendu dire que les rois d’Israël sont des rois généreux, laisse-nous mettre des sacs autour de nos reins et des cordes autour de notre tête, et nous irons trouver le roi d’Israël, peut-être te laissera-t-il la vie sauve.”
32 So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.	32 Ils se mirent donc des sacs autour des reins, des cordes autour de leur tête, et ils allèrent dire au roi d’Israël: “Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad te fait dire ceci: Accorde-moi seulement la vie sauve!” Le roi Akab répondit: “Est-il toujours en vie? Il est mon frère!”
33 Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.	33 Les autres n’en espéraient pas tant, ils dirent aussitôt: “Ben-Hadad est ton frère!” Le roi répondit: “Allez le chercher.” Ben-Hadad vint donc à sa rencontre et Akab le fit monter sur son char.
34 And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.	34 Ben-Hadad lui dit: “Je te rendrai les villes que mon père a prises à ton père, et tu pourras installer des commerces à Damas comme mon père en avait installé à Samarie.” Akab répondit: “Je te laisserai partir en échange d’un traité.” Il conclut donc un traité avec lui et le laissa partir.
35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.	35 Au même moment un frère prophète disait à son compagnon sur l’ordre de Yahvé: “Frappe-moi donc!” Mais l’autre refusa de le frapper.
36 Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.	36 Il lui dit alors: “Puisque tu n’as pas écouté la voix de Yahvé, le lion te frappera après que tu m’auras quitté.” Il s’en alla, le lion le rencontra et le tua.
37 Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.	37 Le prophète alla trouver un autre compagnon et lui dit: “Frappe-moi donc!” L’homme commença à le frapper et le blessa.
38 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.	38 Alors le frère prophète alla se poster sur le passage du roi; il s’était déguisé avec un bandeau sur les yeux.
39 And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.	39 Au moment où le roi passait, il cria vers le roi: “Je suis arrivé sur le champ de bataille lorsqu’un autre en partait. Il m’a laissé un prisonnier en me disant: ‘Garde bien cet homme, car s’il s’échappe, ta vie paiera pour la sienne ou tu verseras un talent d’argent.’
40 And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.	40 Or pendant que j’étais occupé ici et là, le prisonnier a disparu.” Le roi d’Israël lui répondit: “Mais tu prononces toi-même ton jugement!”
41 And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.	41 Aussitôt le prophète enleva le bandeau qu’il avait sur les yeux et le roi d’Israël le reconnut pour un des prophètes.
42 And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.	42 Alors il dit au roi: “Écoute cette parole de Yahvé: Puisque tu as laissé échapper l’homme que j’avais voué à l’anathème, ta vie répondra pour sa vie, et ton peuple pour son peuple.”
43 And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.	43 Le roi d’Israël s’en alla démoralisé et de très mauvaise humeur; il rentra chez lui à Samarie.
