Τον μεν πρωτον λογον εκαμον, ω Θεοφιλε, περι παντων οσα ηρχισεν ο Ιησους να καμνη και να διδασκη,1 Certainly, O Theophilus, I composed the first discourse about everything that Jesus began to do and to teach,
μεχρι της ημερας καθ' ην ανεληφθη, αφου δια Πνευματος Αγιου εδωκεν εντολας εις τους αποστολους, τους οποιους εξελεξεν?2 instructing the Apostles, whom he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, even until the day on which he was taken up.
εις τους οποιους και εφανερωσεν εαυτον ζωντα μετα το παθος αυτου δια πολλων τεκμηριων, εμφανιζομενος εις αυτους τεσσαρακοντα ημερας και λεγων τα περι της βασιλειας του Θεου.3 He also presented himself alive to them, after his Passion, appearing to them throughout forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God with many elucidations.
Και συνερχομενος μετ' αυτων, παρηγγειλε να μη απομακρυνθωσιν απο Ιεροσολυμων, αλλα να περιμενωσι την επαγγελιαν του Πατρος, την οποιαν ηκουσατε, ειπε, παρ' εμου.4 And dining with them, he instructed them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but that they should wait for the Promise of the Father, “about which you have heard,” he said, “from my own mouth.
Διοτι ο μεν Ιωαννης εβαπτισεν εν υδατι, σεις ομως θελετε βαπτισθη εν Πνευματι Αγιω ουχι μετα πολλας ταυτας ημερας.5 For John, indeed, baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit, not many days from now.”
Εκεινοι λοιπον συνελθοντες ηρωτων αυτον, λεγοντες? Κυριε, ταχα εν τω καιρω τουτω αποκαθιστανεις την βασιλειαν εις τον Ισραηλ;6 Therefore, those who had assembled together questioned him, saying, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom of Israel?”
Ειπε δε προς αυτους? Δεν ανηκει εις εσας να γνωριζητε τους χρονους η τους καιρους, τους οποιους ο Πατηρ εθεσεν εν τη ιδια αυτου εξουσια,7 But he said to them: “It is not yours to know the times or the moments, which the Father has set by his own authority.
αλλα θελετε λαβει δυναμιν, οταν επελθη το Αγιον Πνευμα εφ' υμας, και θελετε εισθαι εις εμε μαρτυρες και εν Ιερουσαλημ και εν παση τη Ιουδαια και Σαμαρεια και εως εσχατου της γης.8 But you shall receive the power of the Holy Spirit, passing over you, and you shall be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.”
Και αφου ειπε ταυτα, βλεποντων αυτων ανεληφθη, και νεφελη υπελαβεν αυτον απο των οφθαλμων αυτων.9 And when he had said these things, while they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
Και ενω ησαν ατενιζοντες εις τον ουρανον οτε αυτος ανεβαινεν, ιδου, ανδρες δυο με ιματια λευκα εσταθησαν πλησιον αυτων,10 And while they were watching him going up to heaven, behold, two men stood near them in white vestments.
οιτινες και ειπον? Ανδρες Γαλιλαιοι, τι ιστασθε εμβλεποντες εις τον ουρανον; ουτος ο Ιησους, οστις ανεληφθη αφ' υμων εις τον ουρανον, θελει ελθει ουτω καθ' ον τροπον ειδετε αυτον πορευομενον εις τον ουρανον.11 And they said: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, shall return in just the same way that you have seen him going up to heaven.”
Τοτε υπεστρεψαν εις Ιερουσαλημ απο του ορους του καλουμενου Ελαιωνος, το οποιον ειναι πλησιον της Ιερουσαλημ, απεχον οδον σαββατου.12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain, which is called Olivet, which is next to Jerusalem, within a Sabbath day’s journey.
Και οτε εισηλθον, ανεβησαν εις το ανωγεον, οπου ειχον το καταλυμα, ο Πετρος και Ιακωβος και Ιωαννης και Ανδρεας, Φιλιππος και Θωμας, Βαρθολομαιος και Ματθαιος, Ιακωβος Αλφαιου και Σιμων ο Ζηλωτης και Ιουδας Ιακωβου.13 And when they had entered into the cenacle, they ascended to the place where Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Jude of James, were staying.
Ουτοι παντες ενεμενον ομοθυμαδον εις την προσευχην και την δεησιν μετα των γυναικων και Μαριας της μητρος του Ιησου και μετα των αδελφων αυτου.14 All these were persevering with one accord in prayer with the women, and with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
Και εν ταις ημεραις ταυταις σηκωθεις ο Πετρος εις το μεσον των μαθητων, ειπεν? ητο δε ο αριθμος των εκει παροντων ως εκατον εικοσιν?15 In those days, Peter, rising up in the midst of the brothers, said (now the crowd of men altogether was about one hundred and twenty):
Ανδρες αδελφοι, επρεπε να πληρωθη η γραφη αυτη, την οποιαν προειπε το Πνευμα το Αγιον δια στοματος του Δαβιδ περι του Ιουδα, οστις εγεινεν οδηγος εις τους συλλαβοντας τον Ιησουν,16 “Noble brothers, the Scripture must be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit predicted by the mouth of David about Judas, who was the leader of those who apprehended Jesus.
διοτι ητο συνηριθμημενος με ημας και ελαβε την μεριδα της διακονιας ταυτης.17 He had been numbered among us, and he was chosen by lot for this ministry.
Ουτος λοιπον απεκτησεν αγρον εκ του μισθου της αδικιας, και πεσων προμυττα εσχισθη εις το μεσον, και εξεχυθησαν ολα τα εντοσθια αυτου?18 And this man certainly possessed an estate from the wages of iniquity, and so, having been hanged, he burst open in the middle and all his internal organs poured out.
και εγεινε γνωστον εις παντας τους κατοικουντας την Ιερουσαλημ, ωστε ο αγρος εκεινος ωνομασθη εν τη ιδια αυτων διαλεκτω Ακελδαμα, τουτεστιν, αγρος αιματος.19 And this became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that this field was called in their language, Akeldama, that is, ‘Field of Blood.’
Διοτι ειναι γεγραμμενον εν τω βιβλιω των Ψαλμων? Ας γεινη η κατοικια αυτου ερημος και ας μη ηναι ο κατοικων εν αυτη? και, Αλλος ας λαβη την επισκοπην αυτου.20 For it has been written in the book of Psalms: ‘Let their dwelling place be desolate and may there be no one who dwells within it,’ and ‘Let another take his episcopate.’
Πρεπει λοιπον εκ των ανδρων, οιτινες συνηλθον μεθ' ημων καθ' ολον τον καιρον, καθ' ον εισηλθε και εξηλθε προς ημας ο Κυριος Ιησους,21 Therefore, it is necessary that, out of these men who have been assembling with us throughout the entire time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
αρχισας απο του βαπτισματος του Ιωαννου εως της ημερας καθ' ην ανεληφθη αφ' ημων, εις εκ τουτων να γεινη μεθ' ημων μαρτυς της αναστασεως αυτου.22 beginning from the baptism of John, until the day when he was taken up from us, one of these be made a witness with us of his Resurrection.”
Και εστησαν δυο, Ιωσηφ τον καλουμενον Βαρσαβαν, οστις επωνομασθη Ιουστος, και Ματθιαν.23 And they appointed two: Joseph, who was called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
Και προσευχηθεντες ειπον? Συ, Κυριε, καρδιογνωστα παντων, αναδειξον εκ των δυο τουτων ενα, οντινα εξελεξας,24 And praying, they said: “May you, O Lord, who knows the heart of everyone, reveal which one of these two you have chosen,
δια να λαβη την μεριδα της διακονιας ταυτης και αποστολης, εκ της οποιας εξεπεσεν ο Ιουδας δια να απελθη εις τον τοπον αυτου.25 to take a place in this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas prevaricated, so that he might go to his own place.”
Και εδωκαν τους κληρους αυτων, και επεσεν ο κληρος εις τον Ματθιαν, και συγκατεψηφισθη μετα των ενδεκα αποστολων.26 And they cast lots concerning them, and the lot fell upon Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven Apostles.
