και παρελαβεν γοργιας πεντακισχιλιους ανδρας και χιλιαν ιππον εκλεκτην και απηρεν η παρεμβολη νυκτος | 1 Now Gorgias took five thousand infantry and a thousand picked cavalry, and this detachment set out at night |
ωστε επιβαλειν επι την παρεμβολην των ιουδαιων και παταξαι αυτους αφνω και υιοι της ακρας ησαν αυτω οδηγοι | 2 in order to attack the camp of the Jews and take them by surprise. Some men from the citadel were their guides. |
και ηκουσεν ιουδας και απηρεν αυτος και οι δυνατοι παταξαι την δυναμιν του βασιλεως την εν αμμαους | 3 Judas heard of it, and himself set out with his soldiers to attack the king's army at Emmaus, |
εως ετι εσκορπισμεναι ησαν αι δυναμεις απο της παρεμβολης | 4 while the latter's forces were still scattered away from the camp. |
και ηλθεν γοργιας εις την παρεμβολην ιουδου νυκτος και ουδενα ευρεν και εζητει αυτους εν τοις ορεσιν οτι ειπεν φευγουσιν ουτοι αφ' ημων | 5 During the night Gorgias came into the camp of Judas, and found no one there; so he began to hunt for them in the mountains, saying, "They are fleeing from us." |
και αμα ημερα ωφθη ιουδας εν τω πεδιω εν τρισχιλιοις ανδρασιν πλην καλυμματα και μαχαιρας ουκ ειχον ως ηβουλοντο | 6 But at daybreak Judas appeared in the plain with three thousand men, who lacked such armor and swords as they would have wished. |
και ειδον παρεμβολην εθνων ισχυραν και τεθωρακισμενην και ιππον κυκλουσαν αυτην και ουτοι διδακτοι πολεμου | 7 They saw the army of the Gentiles, strong and breastplated, flanked with cavalry, and made up of expert soldiers. |
και ειπεν ιουδας τοις ανδρασιν τοις μετ' αυτου μη φοβεισθε το πληθος αυτων και το ορμημα αυτων μη δειλωθητε | 8 Judas said to the men with him: "Do not be afraid of their numbers or dread their attack. |
μνησθητε ως εσωθησαν οι πατερες ημων εν θαλασση ερυθρα οτε εδιωκεν αυτους φαραω εν δυναμει | 9 Remember how our fathers were saved in the Red Sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army. |
και νυν βοησωμεν εις ουρανον ει θελησει ημας και μνησθησεται διαθηκης πατερων και συντριψει την παρεμβολην ταυτην κατα προσωπον ημων σημερον | 10 So now let us cry to Heaven in the hope that he will favor us, remember his covenant with our fathers, and destroy this army before us today. |
και γνωσονται παντα τα εθνη οτι εστιν ο λυτρουμενος και σωζων τον ισραηλ | 11 All the Gentiles shall know that there is One who redeems and delivers Israel." |
και ηραν οι αλλοφυλοι τους οφθαλμους αυτων και ειδον αυτους ερχομενους εξ εναντιας | 12 When the foreigners looked up and saw them marching toward them, |
και εξηλθον εκ της παρεμβολης εις πολεμον και εσαλπισαν οι παρα ιουδου | 13 they came out of their camp for battle, and the men with Judas blew the trumpet. |
και συνηψαν και συνετριβησαν τα εθνη και εφυγον εις το πεδιον | 14 The battle was joined and the Gentiles were defeated and fled toward the plain. |
οι δε εσχατοι παντες επεσον εν ρομφαια και εδιωξαν αυτους εως γαζηρων και εως των πεδιων της ιδουμαιας και αζωτου και ιαμνειας και επεσαν εξ αυτων εις ανδρας τρισχιλιους | 15 Their whole rearguard fell by the sword, and they were pursued as far as Gazara and the plains of Judea, to Azotus and Jamnia. About three thousand of their men fell. |
και απεστρεψεν ιουδας και η δυναμις απο του διωκειν οπισθεν αυτων | 16 When Judas and the army returned from the pursuit, |
και ειπεν προς τον λαον μη επιθυμησητε των σκυλων οτι πολεμος εξ εναντιας ημων | 17 he said to the people: "Do not be greedy for the plunder, for there is a fight ahead of us, |
και γοργιας και η δυναμις εν τω ορει εγγυς ημων αλλα στητε νυν εναντιον των εχθρων ημων και πολεμησατε αυτους και μετα ταυτα λαβετε τα σκυλα μετα παρρησιας | 18 and Gorgias and his army are near us on the mountain. But now stand firm against our enemies and overthrow them. Afterward you can freely take the plunder." |
ετι πληρουντος ιουδου ταυτα μερος τι ωφθη εκκυπτον εκ του ορους | 19 As Judas was finishing this speech, a detachment appeared, looking down from the mountain. |
και ειδεν οτι τετροπωνται και εμπυριζουσιν την παρεμβολην ο γαρ καπνος ο θεωρουμενος ενεφανιζεν το γεγονος | 20 They saw that their army had been put to flight and their camp was being burned. The smoke that could be seen indicated what had happened. |
οι δε ταυτα συνιδοντες εδειλωθησαν σφοδρα συνιδοντες δε και την ιουδου παρεμβολην εν τω πεδιω ετοιμην εις παραταξιν | 21 When they realized this, they were terrified; and when they also saw the army of Judas in the plain ready to attack, |
εφυγον παντες εις γην αλλοφυλων | 22 they all fled to Philistine territory. |
και ιουδας ανεστρεψεν επι την σκυλειαν της παρεμβολης και ελαβον χρυσιον πολυ και αργυριον και υακινθον και πορφυραν θαλασσιαν και πλουτον μεγαν | 23 Then Judas went back to plunder the camp, and his men collected much gold and silver, violet and crimson cloth, and great treasure. |
και επιστραφεντες υμνουν και ευλογουν εις ουρανον οτι καλον οτι εις τον αιωνα το ελεος αυτου | 24 As they returned, they were singing hymns and glorifying Heaven, "for he is good, for his mercy endures forever." |
και εγενηθη σωτηρια μεγαλη τω ισραηλ εν τη ημερα εκεινη | 25 Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day. |
οσοι δε των αλλοφυλων διεσωθησαν παραγενηθεντες απηγγειλαν τω λυσια παντα τα συμβεβηκοτα | 26 But those of the foreigners who had escaped went and told Lysias all that had occurred. |
ο δε ακουσας συνεχυθη και ηθυμει οτι ουχ οια ηθελεν τοιαυτα εγεγονει τω ισραηλ και ουχ οια αυτω ενετειλατο ο βασιλευς εξεβη | 27 When he heard it he was disturbed and discouraged, because things in Israel had not turned out as he intended and as the king had ordered. |
και εν τω ερχομενω ενιαυτω συνελοχησεν ανδρων επιλεκτων εξηκοντα χιλιαδας και πεντακισχιλιαν ιππον ωστε εκπολεμησαι αυτους | 28 So the following year he gathered together sixty thousand picked men and five thousand cavalry, to subdue them. |
και ηλθον εις την ιδουμαιαν και παρενεβαλον εν βαιθσουροις και συνηντησεν αυτοις ιουδας εν δεκα χιλιασιν ανδρων | 29 They came into Idumea and camped at Beth-zur, and Judas met them with ten thousand men. |
και ειδεν την παρεμβολην ισχυραν και προσηυξατο και ειπεν ευλογητος ει ο σωτηρ ισραηλ ο συντριψας το ορμημα του δυνατου εν χειρι του δουλου σου δαυιδ και παρεδωκας την παρεμβολην των αλλοφυλων εις χειρας ιωναθου υιου σαουλ και του αιροντος τα σκευη αυτου | 30 Seeing that the army was strong, he prayed thus: "Blessed are you, O Savior of Israel, who broke the rush of the mighty one by the hand of your servant David and delivered the camp of the Philistines into the hand of Jonathan, the son of Saul, and his armor-bearer. |
ουτως συγκλεισον την παρεμβολην ταυτην εν χειρι λαου σου ισραηλ και αισχυνθητωσαν επι τη δυναμει και τη ιππω αυτων | 31 Give this army into the hands of your people Israel; make them ashamed of their troops and their cavalry. |
δος αυτοις δειλιαν και τηξον θρασος ισχυος αυτων και σαλευθητωσαν τη συντριβη αυτων | 32 Strike them with fear, weaken the boldness of their strength, and let them tremble at their own destruction. |
καταβαλε αυτους ρομφαια αγαπωντων σε και αινεσατωσαν σε παντες οι ειδοτες το ονομα σου εν υμνοις | 33 Strike them down by the sword of those who love you, that all who know your name may hymn your praise." |
και συνεβαλλον αλληλοις και επεσον εκ της παρεμβολης λυσιου εις πεντακισχιλιους ανδρας και επεσον εξ εναντιας αυτων | 34 Then they engaged in battle, and about five thousand of Lysias' men fell in hand-to-hand fighting. |
ιδων δε λυσιας την γενομενην τροπην της αυτου συνταξεως της δε ιουδου το γεγενημενον θαρσος και ως ετοιμοι εισιν η ζην η τεθνηκεναι γενναιως απηρεν εις αντιοχειαν και εξενολογει πλεοναστον παλιν παραγινεσθαι εις την ιουδαιαν | 35 When Lysias saw his ranks beginning to give way, and the increased boldness of Judas, whose men were ready either to live or to die bravely, he withdrew to Antioch and began to recruit mercenaries so as to return to Judea with greater numbers. |
ειπεν δε ιουδας και οι αδελφοι αυτου ιδου συνετριβησαν οι εχθροι ημων αναβωμεν καθαρισαι τα αγια και εγκαινισαι | 36 Then Judas and his brothers said, "Now that our enemies have been crushed, let us go up to purify the sanctuary and rededicate it." |
και συνηχθη η παρεμβολη πασα και ανεβησαν εις ορος σιων | 37 So the whole army assembled, and went up to Mount Zion. |
και ειδον το αγιασμα ηρημωμενον και το θυσιαστηριον βεβηλωμενον και τας θυρας κατακεκαυμενας και εν ταις αυλαις φυτα πεφυκοτα ως εν δρυμω η ως εν ενι των ορεων και τα παστοφορια καθηρημενα | 38 They found the sanctuary desolate, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt, weeds growing in the courts as in a forest or on some mountain, and the priests' chambers demolished. |
και διερρηξαν τα ιματια αυτων και εκοψαντο κοπετον μεγαν και επεθεντο σποδον | 39 Then they tore their clothes and made great lamentation; they sprinkled their heads with ashes |
και επεσαν επι προσωπον επι την γην και εσαλπισαν ταις σαλπιγξιν των σημασιων και εβοησαν εις ουρανον | 40 and fell with their faces to the ground. And when the signal was given with trumpets, they cried out to Heaven. |
τοτε επεταξεν ιουδας ανδρασιν πολεμειν τους εν τη ακρα εως καθαριση τα αγια | 41 Judas appointed men to attack those in the citadel, while he purified the sanctuary. |
και επελεξατο ιερεις αμωμους θελητας νομου | 42 He chose blameless priests, devoted to the law; |
και εκαθαρισαν τα αγια και ηραν τους λιθους του μιασμου εις τοπον ακαθαρτον | 43 these purified the sanctuary and carried away the stones of the Abomination to an unclean place. |
και εβουλευσαντο περι του θυσιαστηριου της ολοκαυτωσεως του βεβηλωμενου τι αυτω ποιησωσιν | 44 They deliberated what ought to be done with the altar of holocausts that had been desecrated. |
και επεσεν αυτοις βουλη αγαθη καθελειν αυτο μηποτε γενηται αυτοις εις ονειδος οτι εμιαναν τα εθνη αυτο και καθειλον το θυσιαστηριον | 45 The happy thought came to them to tear it down, lest it be a lasting shame to them that the Gentiles had defiled it; so they tore down the altar. |
και απεθεντο τους λιθους εν τω ορει του οικου εν τοπω επιτηδειω μεχρι του παραγενηθηναι προφητην του αποκριθηναι περι αυτων | 46 They stored the stones in a suitable place on the temple hill, until a prophet should come and decide what to do with them. |
και ελαβον λιθους ολοκληρους κατα τον νομον και ωκοδομησαν θυσιαστηριον καινον κατα το προτερον | 47 Then they took uncut stones, according to the law, and built a new altar like the former one. |
και ωκοδομησαν τα αγια και τα εντος του οικου και τας αυλας ηγιασαν | 48 They also repaired the sanctuary and the interior of the temple and purified the courts. |
και εποιησαν σκευη αγια καινα και εισηνεγκαν την λυχνιαν και το θυσιαστηριον των θυμιαματων και την τραπεζαν εις τον ναον | 49 They made new sacred vessels and brought the lampstand, the altar of incense, and the table into the temple. |
και εθυμιασαν επι το θυσιαστηριον και εξηψαν τους λυχνους τους επι της λυχνιας και εφαινον εν τω ναω | 50 Then they burned incense on the altar and lighted the lamps on the lampstand, and these illuminated the temple. |
και επεθηκαν επι την τραπεζαν αρτους και εξεπετασαν τα καταπετασματα και ετελεσαν παντα τα εργα α εποιησαν | 51 They also put loaves on the table and hung up curtains. Thus they finished all the work they had undertaken. |
και ωρθρισαν το πρωι τη πεμπτη και εικαδι του μηνος του ενατου ουτος ο μην χασελευ του ογδοου και τεσσαρακοστου και εκατοστου ετους | 52 Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, that is, the month of Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-eight, |
και ανηνεγκαν θυσιαν κατα τον νομον επι το θυσιαστηριον των ολοκαυτωματων το καινον ο εποιησαν | 53 they arose and offered sacrifice according to the law on the new altar of holocausts that they had made. |
κατα τον καιρον και κατα την ημεραν εν η εβεβηλωσαν αυτο τα εθνη εν εκεινη ενεκαινισθη εν ωδαις και κιθαραις και κινυραις και κυμβαλοις | 54 On the anniversary of the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it, on that very day it was reconsecrated with songs, harps, flutes, and cymbals. |
και επεσεν πας ο λαος επι προσωπον και προσεκυνησαν και ευλογησαν εις ουρανον τον ευοδωσαντα αυτοις | 55 All the people prostrated themselves and adored and praised Heaven, who had given them success. |
και εποιησαν τον εγκαινισμον του θυσιαστηριου ημερας οκτω και προσηνεγκαν ολοκαυτωματα μετ' ευφροσυνης και εθυσαν θυσιαν σωτηριου και αινεσεως | 56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar and joyfully offered holocausts and sacrifices of deliverance and praise. |
και κατεκοσμησαν το κατα προσωπον του ναου στεφανοις χρυσοις και ασπιδισκαις και ενεκαινισαν τας πυλας και τα παστοφορια και εθυρωσαν αυτα | 57 They ornamented the facade of the temple with gold crowns and shields; they repaired the gates and the priests' chambers and furnished them with doors. |
και εγενηθη ευφροσυνη μεγαλη εν τω λαω σφοδρα και απεστραφη ονειδισμος εθνων | 58 There was great joy among the people now that the disgrace of the Gentiles was removed. |
και εστησεν ιουδας και οι αδελφοι αυτου και πασα η εκκλησια ισραηλ ινα αγωνται αι ημεραι του εγκαινισμου του θυσιαστηριου εν τοις καιροις αυτων ενιαυτον κατ' ενιαυτον ημερας οκτω απο της πεμπτης και εικαδος του μηνος χασελευ μετ' ευφροσυνης και χαρας | 59 Then Judas and his brothers and the entire congregation of Israel decreed that the days of the dedication of the altar should be observed with joy and gladness on the anniversary every year for eight days, from the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev. |
και ωκοδομησαν εν τω καιρω εκεινω το ορος σιων κυκλοθεν τειχη υψηλα και πυργους οχυρους μηποτε παραγενηθεντα τα εθνη καταπατησωσιν αυτα ως εποιησαν το προτερον | 60 At that time they built high walls and strong towers around Mount Zion, to prevent the Gentiles from coming and trampling over it as they had done before. |
και απεταξεν εκει δυναμιν τηρειν αυτο και ωχυρωσεν αυτο τηρειν την βαιθσουραν του εχειν τον λαον οχυρωμα κατα προσωπον της ιδουμαιας | 61 Judas also placed a garrison there to protect it, and likewise fortified Beth-zur, that the people might have a stronghold facing Idumea. |
