DOUAI-RHEIMSSAGRADA BIBLIA
After the death of Josue the children of Israel consulted the Lord, saying: Who shall go up before us against the Chanaanite, and shall be the leader of the war?1 Depois da morte de Josué, os israelitas consultaram o Senhor: Quem dentre nós será o primeiro a combater os cananeus?
And the Lord said: Juda shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands.2 O Senhor respondeu: Judá, pois eu entregarei a terra nas suas mãos.
And Juda said to Simeon his brother: Come up with me into my lot, and fight against the Chanaanite, that I also may go along with thee into thy lot. And Simeon went with him.3 Então Judá disse a Simeão, seu irmão: Vem comigo à terra que me coube por sorte, para combatermos contra os cananeus. Depois irei contigo à tua terra. Simeão partiu com ele.
And Juda went up, and the Lord delivered the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite into their hands: and they slew of them in Bezec ten thousand men.4 Judá travou combate e o Senhor entregou-lhe os cananeus e os ferezeus; derrotaram dez mil homens em Bezec.
And they found Adonibezec in Bezec, and fought against him, and they defeated the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite.5 Ali encontraram Adoni-Bezec, atacaram-no e derrotaram os cananeus e os ferezeus.
And Adonibezec fled: and they pursued after him and took him, and cut off his fingers and toes.6 Adoni-Bezec fugiu, mas eles o perseguiram, prenderam-no e cortaram-lhe os polegares das mãos e os hálux dos pés.
And Adonibezec said: Seventy kings having their fingers and toes cut off, gathered up the leavings of the meat under my table: as I have done, so hath God requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.7 Adoni-Bezec disse: Setenta reis, com os polegares das mãos e os hálux dos pés cortados, apanhavam debaixo de minha mesa os sobejos da comida. Como eu fiz, assim Deus me faz. E conduziram-no a Jerusalém, onde morreu.
And the children of Juda besieging Jerusalem, took it, and put it to the sword, and set the whole city on fire.8 Os juditas atacaram Jerusalém e tomaram-na. Passaram os seus habitantes ao fio da espada e incendiaram a cidade.
And afterwards they went down and fought against the Chanaanite, who dwelt in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains.9 Desceram dali e combateram os cananeus das montanhas, do meio-dia e da planície.
And Juda going forward against the Chanaanite, that dwelt in Hebron (the name whereof was in former times Cariath-Arbe) slew Sesai, and Ahiman, and Tholmai:10 Judá marchou contra os cananeus de Hebron {chamada antigamente Cariat-Arbé}, e derrotou Sesai, Aimã e Tolmai.
And departing from thence he went to the inhabitants of Dabir, the ancient name of which was Cariath-Sepher, that is, the city of letters.11 Marchou depois contra os habitantes de Dabir, que antigamente se chamava Cariat-Sefer.
And Caleb said: He that shall take Cariath-Sepher, and lay it waste, to him will I give my daughter Axa to wife.12 Caleb tinha dito: Àquele que combater e tomar Cariat-Sefer darei por mulher minha filha Axa.
And Othoniel the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb, having taken it, he gave him Axa his daughter to wife.13 Otoniel, filho de Cenez, irmão mais novo de Caleb, tomou a cidade; e Caleb deu-lhe sua filha Axa por mulher.
And as she was going on her way her husband admonished her to ask a field of her father. And as she sighed sitting on her ass, Caleb said to her: What aileth thee?14 Chegando Axa à casa de seu marido, ele moveu-a a que pedisse um campo ao seu pai. {E pela segunda vez} ela saltou de seu jumento, e Caleb disse-lhe: Que tens?
But she answered: Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a dry land: give me also a watery land. So Caleb gave her the upper and the nether watery ground.15 Dá-me, respondeu ela, um presente. Instalaste-me em uma terra árida; dá-me também fontes de água! E Caleb deu-lhe as fontes superiores e inferiores.
And the children of the Cinite, the kinsman of Moses, went up from the city of palms, with the children of Juda into the wilderness of his lot, which is at the south side of Arad, and they dwelt with him.16 Os filhos de Hobab, o quenita, cunhado de Moisés, subiram da cidade das Palmeiras com os juditas, no deserto de Judá, ao sul de Arad, e vieram estabelecer-se com o povo.
And Juda went with Simeon his brother, and they together defeated the Chanaanites that dwelt in Sephaath, and slew them. And the name of the city was called Horma, that is, Anathema.17 Judá prosseguiu sua marcha com Simeão, seu irmão, e derrotaram os cananeus de Sefaat. Votaram a cidade ao interdito e ela recebeu o nome de Horma.
And Juda took Gaza with its confines, and Ascalon and Accaron with their confines.18 Judá tomou também Gaza e seu território, bem como Ascalon e Acaron com seus territórios.
And the Lord was with Juda, and he possessed the hill country: but was not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, because they had many chariots armed with scythes.19 O Senhor estava com Judá, e ele conquistou a montanha; porém, não pôde despojar os habitantes da planície que possuíam carros de ferro.
And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Enac.20 Conforme o que Moisés tinha dito, deram Hebron a Caleb, que expulsou dela os três filhos de Enac.
But the sons of Benjamin did not destroy the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem: and the Jebusite hath dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this present day.21 Os benjaminitas não exterminaram os jebuseus de Jerusalém; por isso, os jebuseus habitaram em Jerusalém com os benjaminitas até o presente.
The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.22 A família de José marchou também contra Betel, e o Senhor esteve com eles.
For when they were besieging the city, which before was called Luza,23 E quando exploravam Betel, que antes se chamava Luz,
They saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him: Shew us the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.24 viram um homem que saía da cidade, e disseram-lhe: Mostra-nos por onde se pode entrar na cidade e usaremos de misericórdia contigo.
And when he had shewn them, they smote the city with the edge of the sword: but that man and all his kindred they let go:25 Ele indicou-lhes a entrada, e passaram a localidade ao fio da espada, poupando, porém, aquele homem com a sua família.
Who being sent away, went into the land of Hethim, and built there a city, and called it Luza: which is so called until this day.26 Este emigrou para a terra dos hiteus, onde construiu uma cidade, à qual pôs o nome de Luz, nome que ela conserva ainda hoje.
Manasses also did not destroy Bethsan, and Thanac with their villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor, and Jeblaam, and Mageddo with their villages. And the Chanaanite began to dwell with them.27 Manassés não expulsou os habitantes de Betsã com suas aldeias, nem os de Tanac, de Dor, de Jeblaão, de Magedo, com suas aldeias, porque os cananeus estavam decididos a ocupar essa terra.
But after Israel was grown strong he made them tributaries, and would not destroy them.28 Quando se tornaram mais fortes, os israelitas fizeram-nos tributários, mas não os despojaram.
Ephraim also did not slay the Chanaanite that dwelt in Gazer, but dwelt with him.29 Efraim não expulsou os cananeus de Geser, os quais continuaram a habitar em Geser, no meio de Efraim.
Zabulon destroyed not the inhabitants of Cetron, and Naalol: but the Chanaanite dwelt among them, and became their tributaries.30 Zabulon não expulsou os habitantes de Cetron, nem os de Naalol; e os cananeus continuaram a habitar no meio de Zabulon, embora sujeitos ao tributo.
Aser also destroyed not the inhabitants of Accho, and of Sidon, of Ahalab, and of Achazib, and of Helba, and of Aphec, and of Rohob:31 Aser não expulsou os habitantes de Aco, nem os de Sidon, nem os de Aalab, de Acasib, de Helba, de Afec e de Roob;
And he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of that land, and did not slay them.32 os filhos de Aser estabeleceram-se entre os cananeus, habitantes daquela terra; não os despojaram.
Nephtali also destroyed not the inhabitants of Bethsames, and of Bethanath: and he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of the land, and the Bethsamites and Bethanites were tributaries to him.33 Neftali não expulsou os habitantes de Bet-Sames, nem os de Bet-Anat, e estabeleceu-se entre os cananeus, habitantes daquela terra; os betsamitas e os betanitas ficaram-lhe tributários.
And the Amorrhite straitened the children of Dan in the mountain, and gave them not place to go down to the plain:34 Os amorreus repeliram os danitas para a montanha, e não os deixaram descer para a planície.
And he dwelt in the mountain Hares, that is, of potsherds, in Aialon and Salebim. And the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy upon him, and he became tributary to him.35 Persistiram em ficar em Har-Harés, em Ajalon e em Salebim; mas a mão da casa de José prevaleceu sobre eles, e tiveram de pagar o tributo.
And the border of the Amorrhite was from the ascent of the scorpion, the rock, and the higher places.36 O território dos amorreus estendia-se desde a costa de Acrabim e de Sela, para o norte.
