DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us
Looking on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, who having joy set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and now sitteth on the right hand of the throne of God.2 while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.
For think diligently upon him that endured such opposition from sinners against himself; that you be not wearied, fainting in your minds.3 Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.
For you have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin:4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.
And you have forgotten the consolation, which speaketh to you, as unto children, saying: My son, neglect not the discipline of the Lord; neither be thou wearied whilst thou art rebuked by him.5 You have also forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons: "My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him;
For whom the Lord loveth, he chastiseth; and he scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.6 for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges."
Persevere under discipline. God dealeth with you as with his sons; for what son is there, whom the father doth not correct?7 Endure your trials as "discipline"; God treats you as sons. For what "son" is there whom his father does not discipline?
But if you be without chastisement, whereof all are made partakers, then are you bastards, and not sons.8 If you are without discipline, in which all have shared, you are not sons but bastards.
Moreover we have had fathers of our flesh, for instructors, and we reverenced them: shall we not much more obey the Father of spirits, and live?9 Besides this, we have had our earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not (then) submit all the more to the Father of spirits and live?
And they indeed for a few days, according to their own pleasure, instructed us: but he, for our profit, that we might receive his sanctification.10 They disciplined us for a short time as seemed right to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we may share his holiness.
Now all chastisement for the present indeed seemeth not to bring with it joy, but sorrow: but afterwards it will yield, to them that are exercised by it, the most peaceable fruit of justice.11 At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.
Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees,12 So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees.
And make straight steps with your feet: that no one, halting, may go out of the way; but rather be healed.13 Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed.
Follow peace with all men, and holiness: without which no man shall see God.14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for that holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
Looking diligently, lest any man be wanting to the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up do hinder, and by it many be defiled.15 See to it that no one be deprived of the grace of God, that no bitter root spring up and cause trouble, through which many may become defiled,
Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau; who for one mess, sold his first birthright.16 that no one be an immoral or profane person like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.
For know ye that afterwards, when he desired to inherit the benediction, he was rejected; for he found no place of repentance, although with tears he had sought it.17 For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit his father's blessing, he was rejected because he found no opportunity to change his mind, even though he sought the blessing with tears.
For you are not come to a mountain that might be touched, and a burning fire, and a whirlwind, and darkness, and storm,18 You have not approached that which could be touched and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm
And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words, which they that heard excused themselves, that the word might not be spoken to them:19 and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message be further addressed to them,
For they did not endure that which was said: And if so much as a beast shall touch the mount, it shall be stoned.20 for they could not bear to hear the command: "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned."
And so terrible was that which was seen, Moses said: I am frighted, and tremble.21 Indeed, so fearful was the spectacle that Moses said, "I am terrified and trembling."
But you are come to mount Sion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to the company of many thousands of angels,22 No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering,
And to the church of the firstborn, who are written in the heavens, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the just made perfect,23 and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect,
And to Jesus the mediator of the new testament, and to the sprinkling of blood which speaketh better than that of Abel.24 and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel.
See that you refuse him not that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spoke upon the earth, much more shall not we, that turn away from him that speaketh to us from heaven.25 See that you do not reject the one who speaks. For if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much more in our case if we turn away from the one who warns from heaven.
Whose voice then moved the earth; but now he promiseth, saying: Yet once more, and I will move not only the earth, but heaven also.26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, "I will once more shake not only earth but heaven."
And in that he saith, Yet once more, he signifieth the translation of the moveable things as made, that those things may remain which are immoveable.27 That phrase, "once more," points to (the) removal of shaken, created things, so that what is unshaken may remain.
Therefore receiving an immoveable kingdom, we have grace; whereby let us serve, pleasing God, with fear and reverence.28 Therefore, we who are receiving the unshakable kingdom should have gratitude, with which we should offer worship pleasing to God in reverence and awe.
For our God is a consuming fire.29 For our God is a consuming fire.
