1 But the children of Israel transgressed the commandment, and took to their own use of the anathema. For Achan the son of Charmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zare of the tribe of Juda, took something of the anathema: and the Lord was angry against the children of Israel.	1 Gli Israeliti si resero colpevoli di violazione quanto allo sterminio: Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda, si impadronì di quanto era votato allo sterminio e allora la collera del Signore si accese contro gli Israeliti.
2 And when Josue sent men from Jericho against Hai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of the town of Bethel, he said to them: Go up, and view the country: and they fulfilled his command, and viewed Hai.	2 Giosuè inviò uomini di Gèrico ad Ai, che è presso Bet-Aven, ad oriente di Betel. Disse loro: "Andate a esplorare la regione". Gli uomini andarono a esplorare Ai.
3 And returning they said to him: Let not all the people go up, but let two or three thousand men go and destroy the city: why should all the people be troubled in vain against enemies that are very few?	3 Poi ritornarono da Giosuè e gli dissero: "Non vada tutto il popolo; vadano all'assalto due o tremila uomini per espugnare Ai; non impegnateci tutto il popolo, perché sono pochi".
4 There went up therefore three thousand fighting men: who immediately turned their backs,	4 Vi andarono allora del popolo circa tremila uomini, ma si diedero alla fuga dinanzi agli uomini di Ai.
5 And were defeated by the men of the city of Hai, and there fell of them six and thirty men : and the enemies pursued them from the gate as far as Sabarim, and they slew them as they fled by the descent: and the heart of the people was struck with fear, and melted like water.	5 Gli uomini di Ai ne uccisero circa trentasei, li inseguirono davanti alla porta fino a Sebarim e li colpirono nella discesa. Allora al popolo venne meno il cuore e si sciolse come acqua.
6 But Josue rent his garments, and fell flat on the ground before the ark of the Lord until the evening, both he and all the ancients of Israel: and they put dust upon their heads.	6 Giosuè si stracciò le vesti, si prostrò con la faccia a terra davanti all'arca del Signore fino alla sera e con lui gli anziani di Israele e sparsero polvere sul loro capo.
7 And Josue said: Alas, O Lord God, why wouldst thou bring this people over the river Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorrhite, and to destroy us? would God, we had stayed beyond the Jordan as we began.	7 Giosuè esclamò: "Signore Dio, perché hai fatto passare il Giordano a questo popolo, per metterci poi nelle mani dell'Amorreo e distruggerci? Se avessimo deciso di stabilirci oltre il Giordano!
8 My Lord God, what shall I say, seeing Israel turning their backs to their enemies?	8 Perdonami, Signore: che posso dire, dopo che Israele ha voltato le spalle ai suoi nemici?
9 The Chanaanites, and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and being gathered together will surround us and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do to thy great name?	9 Lo sapranno i Cananei e tutti gli abitanti della regione, ci accerchieranno e cancelleranno il nostro nome dal paese. E che farai tu per il tuo grande nome?".
10 And the Lord said to Josue: Arise, why liest thou flat on the ground?	10 Rispose il Signore a Giosuè: "Alzati, perché stai prostrato sulla faccia?
11 Israel hath sinned, and transgressed my covenant: and they have taken of the anathema, and have stolen and lied, and have hidden it among their goods.	11 Israele ha peccato. Essi hanno trasgredito l'alleanza che avevo loro prescritto e hanno preso ciò che era votato allo sterminio: hanno rubato, hanno dissimulato e messo nei loro sacchi!
12 Neither can Israel stand before his enemies, but he shall flee from them: because he is defiled with the anathema. I will be no more with you, till you destroy him that is guilty of this wickedness.	12 Gli Israeliti non potranno resistere ai loro nemici, volteranno le spalle ai loro nemici, perché sono incorsi nello sterminio. Non sarò più con voi, se non eliminerete da voi chi è incorso nello sterminio.
13 Arise, sanctify the people, and say to them: Be ye sanctified against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel: The anathema is in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thy enemies, till he be destroyed out of thee that is defiled with this wickedness.	13 Orsù, santifica il popolo. Dirai: Santificatevi per domani, perché dice il Signore, Dio di Israele: Uno votato allo sterminio è in mezzo a te, Israele; tu non potrai resistere ai tuoi nemici, finché non eliminerete da voi chi è votato allo sterminio.
14 And you shall come in the morning every one by your tribes: and what tribe soever the lot shall find, it shall come by its kindreds and the kindred by its houses, and the house by the men.	14 Vi accosterete dunque domattina secondo le vostre tribù; la tribù che il Signore avrà designato con la sorte si accosterà per famiglie e la famiglia che il Signore avrà designata si accosterà per case; la casa che il Signore avrà designata si accosterà per individui;
15 And whosoever he be that shall be found guilty of this fact, he shall be burnt with fire with all his substance, because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and hath done wickedness in Israel.	15 colui che risulterà votato allo sterminio sarà bruciato dal fuoco con quanto è suo, perché ha trasgredito l'alleanza del Signore e ha commesso un'infamia in Israele".
16 Josue, therefore, when he rose in the morning, made Israel to come by their tribes, and the tribe of Juda was found,	16 Giosuè si alzò di buon mattino e fece accostare Israele secondo le sue tribù e fu designata dalla sorte la tribù di Giuda.
17 Which being brought by its families, it was found to be the family of Zare. Bringing that also by the houses, he found it to be Zabdi.	17 Fece accostare le famiglie di Giuda e fu designata la famiglia degli Zerachiti; fece accostare la famiglia degli Zerachiti per case e fu designato Zabdi;
18 And bringing his house man by man, he found Achan the son of Charmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zare of the tribe of Juda.	18 fece accostare la sua casa per individui e fu designato dalla sorte Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda.
19 And Josue said to Achan: My son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and confess, and tell me what thou hast done, hide it not.	19 Disse allora Giosuè ad Acan: "Figlio mio, da' gloria al Signore, Dio di Israele, e rendigli omaggio e raccontami ciò che hai fatto, non me lo nascondere".
20 And Achan answered Josue, and said to him: Indeed I have sinned against the Lord the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done.	20 Rispose Acan a Giosuè: "In verità, proprio io ho peccato contro il Signore, Dio di Israele, e ho fatto questo e quest'altro.
21 For I saw among the spoils a scarlet garment exceeding good, and two hundred sides of silver, and a golden rule of fifty sides: and I coveted them, and I took them away, and hid them in the ground is the midst of my tent, and the silver I covered with the earth that I dug up.	21 Avevo visto nel bottino un bel mantello di Sennaar, duecento sicli d'argento e un lingotto d'oro del peso di cinquanta sicli; ne sentii bramosia e li presi ed eccoli nascosti in terra in mezzo alla mia tenda e l'argento è sotto".
22 Josue therefore sent ministers: who running to his tent, found all hidden in the same place, together with the silver.	22 Giosuè mandò allora messaggeri che corsero alla tenda, ed ecco tutto era nascosto nella tenda e l'argento era sotto.
23 And taking them away out of the tent, they brought them to Josue, and to all the children of Israel, and threw them down before the Lord.	23 Li presero dalla tenda, li portarono a Giosuè e a tutti gli Israeliti e li deposero davanti al Signore.
24 Then Josue and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zare, and the silver and the garments, and the golden rule, his sons also and his daughters, his oxen and asses and sheep, the tent also, and all the goods: and brought them to the valley of Achor:	24 Giosuè allora prese Acan di Zerach e l'argento, il mantello, il lingotto d'oro, i suoi figli, le sue figlie, il suo bue, il suo asino, le sue pecore, la sua tenda e quanto gli apparteneva. Tutto Israele lo seguiva ed egli li condusse alla valle di Acor.
25 Where Josue said: Because thou hast troubled us, the Lord trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him: and all things that were his, were consumed with fire.	25 Giosuè disse: "Come tu hai portato sventura a noi, così il Signore oggi la porti a te!". Tutto Israele lo lapidò, li bruciarono tutti e li uccisero tutti a sassate.
26 And they gathered together upon him a great heap of stones, which remaineth until this present day. And the wrath of the Lord was turned away from them. And the name of that place was called the Valley of Achor, until this day.	26 Eressero poi sul posto un gran mucchio di pietre, che esiste fino ad oggi. Il Signore allora desistette dal suo tremendo sdegno. Per questo quel luogo si chiama fino ad oggi Valle di Acor.
