1 And Josue the son of Nun sent from Setim two men, to spy secretly: and said to them: Go, and view the land and the city of Jericho. n They went and entered into the house of a woman that was a harlot named Rahab, and lodged with her.	1 De Chittim, Josué fils de Noun envoya secrètement deux espions. Il leur dit: “Allez! Observez bien le pays et la ville de Jéricho.” Ils firent la route et entrèrent dans la maison d’une prostituée qui s’appelait Rahab; c’est là qu’ils couchèrent.
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, and was said : Behold there are men come in hither, by night, of the children of Israel, to spy the land.	2 On avertit le roi de Jéricho: “Des hommes, des Israélites, sont entrés ici cette nuit, ils sont venus espionner le pays.”
3 And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying: Bring forth the men that came to thee, and are entered into thy house: for they are spies, and are come to view all the land.	3 Alors le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab: “Fais sortir ces hommes qui t’ont approchée et qui sont entrés dans ta maison, car c’est pour espionner le pays qu’ils sont venus.”
4 And the woman taking the men, hid them, and said: I confess they came to me, but I knew not whence they were:	4 Mais la femme alla cacher les deux hommes. Elle répondit: “Ces hommes sont bien venus chez moi, mais je ne savais pas d’où ils étaient.
5 And at the time of shutting the gate in the dark, they also went out together. I know not whither they are gone: pursue after them quickly, and you will overtake them.	5 Ils sont partis à la tombée de la nuit, quand on fermait la porte de la ville, et je ne sais pas où ils sont allés. Lancez-vous vite à leur poursuite et vous les rattraperez.”
6 But she made the men go up to the top of her house, and covered them with the stalks of flax, which was there.	6 En réalité, elle les avait fait monter sur sa terrasse et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin qu’elle y avait déposées.
7 Now they that were sent, pursued after them, by the way that leadeth to the fords of the Jordan: and as soon as they were gone out, the gate was presently shut.	7 Les gens se lancèrent à leur poursuite dans la direction du Jourdain, du côté des gués, et dès qu’ils furent sortis on ferma la porte de la ville.
8 The men that were hidden were not yet asleep, when behold the woman went up to them, and said:	8 Les deux hommes n’étaient pas encore couchés qu’elle les rejoignit sur sa terrasse.
	9 Elle leur dit: “Je sais que Yahvé vous a livré le pays; vous avez semé la panique parmi nous et tous les gens du pays sont terrorisés devant vous.
10 the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea at your going in, when you came out of Egypt: and what things you did to the two kings of the Amorrhites, that were beyond the Jordan: Sehon and Og whom you slew.	10 On nous a dit comment Yahvé a desséché devant vous la mer des Roseaux lorsque vous sortiez d’Égypte, et ce que vous avez fait aux deux rois des Amorites de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à Sihon et à Og, que vous avez voués à l’anathème.
11 I know that the Lord hath given this land to you: for the dread of you is fallen upon us, and all the inhabitants of the land have lost all strength.	11 “Lorsque nous l’avons appris le cœur nous a manqué, et à votre approche tout le monde maintenant est saisi de peur, car Yahvé, votre Dieu, est Dieu là-haut dans les cieux et ici-bas sur la terre.
12 We have heard that	12 Mais maintenant, puisque je vous ai fait une faveur, jurez-moi par Yahvé que vous ferez vous aussi une faveur à la maison de mon père. Donnez-moi donc la preuve de votre fidélité
13 And hearing these things we were affrighted, and our heart fainted away, neither did there remain any spirit in us at your coming in: for the Lord your God he is God in heaven above, and in the earth beneath.	13 et laissez vivre mon père, ma mère, mes frères, mes sœurs et tout ce qui leur appartient. Arrachez-nous à la mort.”
14 Now therefore swear ye to me by the Lord, that as I have shewn mercy to you, so you also will shew mercy to my father's house: and give me a true token,	14 Les hommes répondirent: “Nous te le jurons sur nos propres têtes: à condition que tu ne révèles pas notre conversation, nous te traiterons avec bonté et fidélité lorsque Yahvé nous aura livré le pays.”
15 That you will save my father and mother, my brethren end sisters, and all things that are theirs, and deliver our souls from death.	15 Elle les fit descendre par la fenêtre avec une corde, car sa maison était construite contre le rempart et elle-même logeait dans le rempart.
16 They answered her: Be our lives for you unto death, only if thou betray us not. And when the Lord shall have delivered us the land, we will shew thee mercy and truth.	16 Elle leur dit: “Fuyez vers la montagne pour que ceux qui vous poursuivent ne vous rencontrent pas. Vous y resterez cachés trois jours, jusqu’au retour de ceux qui vous poursuivent, ensuite vous irez votre chemin.”
17 Then she let them down with a cord out of a window: for her house joined close to the wall.	17 Les hommes lui dirent: “Nous respecterons le serment que nous t’avons fait.
18 And she said to them: Get ye up to the mountains, lest perhaps they meet you as they return: and there lie ye hid three days, till they come back, and so you shall go on your way.	18 Lorsque nous entrerons dans le pays, tu attacheras ce cordon de fil rouge à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous as fait descendre. Tu réuniras autour de toi dans ta maison, ton père, ta mère, tes frères et toute la famille de ton père.
19 And they said to her: We shall be blameless of this oath, which thou hast made us swear:	19 Si l’un d’entre eux ouvre la porte et sort de ta maison, il sera responsable de sa mort et nous, nous serons quittes, mais si l’on porte la main sur ceux qui sont avec toi dans ta maison, c’est nous qui serons responsables.
20 If when we come into the land, this scarlet cord be a sign, and thou tie it in the window, by which thou hast let us down: and gather together thy father and mother, and brethren and all thy kindred into thy house.	20 Mais ne révèles pas notre accord, ou sinon nous serons quittes du serment que nous venons de faire.”
21 Whosoever shall go out of the door of thy house, his blood shall be upon his own head, and we shall be quit. But the blood of all that shall be with thee in the house, shall light upon our head, if any man touch them.	21 Elle leur dit: “Qu’il en soit comme vous venez de le dire.” Elle les congédia et ils s’en allèrent; puis elle attacha le cordon rouge à sa fenêtre.
22 But if thou wilt betray us, and utter this word abroad, we shall be quit of this oath which thou hast made us swear.	22 Aussitôt partis, les hommes se dirigèrent vers la montagne. Ils y restèrent trois jours, jusqu’après le retour de ceux qui les poursuivaient. Ceux-ci avaient cherché partout tout au long de la route, et n’avaient rien trouvé.
23 And she answered: As you have spoken, so be it done. And sending them on their way, she hung the scarlet cord in the window.	23 Les deux hommes alors redescendirent de la montagne et traversèrent le Jourdain. Ils se présentèrent alors à Josué, fils de Noun, et ils lui racontèrent toute leur aventure.
24 But they went and came to the mountains, and stayed there three days till they that pursued them were returned. For having sought them through all the way, they found them not.	24 Ils ajoutèrent: “Yahvé a livré tout le pays entre nos mains; tous les habitants du pays sont pris de panique devant nous.”
25 And when they were gone back into the city, the spies returned, and came down from the mountain: and passing over the Jordan, they came to Josue the son of Nun, and told him all that befel them.
