DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And in those days, the number of the disciples increasing, there arose a murmuring of the Greeks against the Hebrews, for that their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.1 At that time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.
Then the twelve calling together the multitude of the disciples, said: It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.2 So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, "It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.
Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.3 Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task,
But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.4 whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
And the saying was liked by all the multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith, and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch.5 The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
These they set before the apostles; and they praying, imposed hands upon them.6 They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.
And the word of the Lord increased; and the number of the disciples was multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly: a great multitude also of the priests obeyed the faith.7 The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.
And Stephen, full of grace and fortitude, did great wonders and signs among the people.8 Now Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people.
Now there arose some of that which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of them that were of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.9 Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen,
And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit that spoke.10 but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.
Then they suborned men to say, they had heard him speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.11 Then they instigated some men to say, "We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God."
And they stirred up the people, and the ancients, and the scribes; and running together, they took him, and brought him to the council.12 They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin.
And they set up false witnesses, who said: This man ceaseth not to speak words against the holy place and the law.13 They presented false witnesses who testified, "This man never stops saying things against (this) holy place and the law.
For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the traditions which Moses delivered unto us.14 For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us."
And all that sat in the council, looking on him, saw his face as if it had been the face of an angel.15 All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
