DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
In those days again, when there was a great multitude, and had nothing to eat; calling his disciples together, he saith to them:1 In those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat, he summoned the disciples and said,
I have compassion on the multitude, for behold they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat.2 "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat.
And if I shall send them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way; for some of them came from afar off.3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance."
And his disciples answered him: From whence can any one fill them here with bread in the wilderness?4 His disciples answered him, "Where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place?"
And he asked them: How many loaves have ye? Who said: Seven.5 Still he asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied.
And taking the seven loaves, giving thanks, he broke, and gave to his disciples for to set before them; and they set them before the people.6 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd.
And they had a few little fishes; and he blessed them, and commanded them to be set before them.7 They also had a few fish. He said the blessing over them and ordered them distributed also.
And they did eat and were filled; and they took up that which was left of the fragments, seven baskets.8 They ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over--seven baskets.
And they that had eaten were about four thousand; and he sent them away.9 There were about four thousand people. He dismissed them
And immediately going up into a ship with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha.10 and got into the boat with his disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha.
And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, asking him a sign from heaven, tempting him.11 The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.
And sighing deeply in spirit, he saith: Why doth this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, a sign shall not be given to this generation.12 He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation."
And leaving them, he went up again into the ship, and passed to the other side of the water.13 Then he left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other shore.
And they forgot to take bread; and they had but one loaf with them in the ship.14 They had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
And he charged them, saying: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.15 He enjoined them, "Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."
And they reasoned among themselves, saying: Because we have no bread.16 They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread.
Which Jesus knowing, saith to them: Why do you reason, because you have no bread? do you not yet know nor understand? have you still your heart blinded?17 When he became aware of this he said to them, "Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened?
Having eyes, see you not? and having ears, hear you not? neither do you remember.18 Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember,
When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took you up? They say to him, Twelve.19 when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?" They answered him, "Twelve."
When also the seven loaves among four thousand, how many baskets of fragments took you up? And they say to him, Seven.20 "When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?" They answered (him), "Seven."
And he said to them: How do you not yet understand?21 He said to them, "Do you still not understand?"
And they came to Bethsaida; and they bring to him a blind man, and they besought him that he would touch him.22 When they arrived at Bethsaida, they brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him.
And taking the blind man by the hand, he led him out of the town; and spitting upon his eyes, laying his hands on him, he asked him if he saw any thing.23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on him and asked, "Do you see anything?"
And looking up, he said: I see men as it were trees, walking.24 Looking up he replied, "I see people looking like trees and walking."
After that again he laid his hands upon his eyes, and he began to see, and was restored, so that he saw all things clearly.25 Then he laid hands on his eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly.
And he sent him into his house, saying: Go into thy house, and if thou enter into the town, tell nobody.26 Then he sent him home and said, "Do not even go into the village."
And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi. And in the way, he asked his disciples, saying to them: Whom do men say that I am?27 Now Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"
Who answered him, saying: John the Baptist; but some Elias, and others as one of the prophets.28 They said in reply, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets."
Then he saith to them: But whom do you say that I am? Peter answering said to him: Thou art the Christ.29 And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in reply, "You are the Messiah."
And he strictly charged them that they should not tell any man of him.30 Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.
And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the ancients and by the high priests, and the scribes, and be killed: and after three days rise again.31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days.
And he spoke the word openly. And Peter taking him, began to rebuke him.32 He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
Who turning about and seeing his disciples, threatened Peter, saying: Go behind me, Satan, because thou savorest not the things that are of God, but that are of men.33 At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."
And calling the multitude together with his disciples, he said to them: If any man will follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.34 He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel, shall save it.35 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.
For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul?36 What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?37 What could one give in exchange for his life?
For he that shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation: the Son of man also will be ashamed of him, when he shall come in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.38 Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."
And he said to them: Amen I say to you, that there are some of them that stand here, who shall not taste death, till they see the kingdom of God coming in power.
