DOUAI-RHEIMS	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 And now, O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, the soul in anguish, and the troubled spirit crieth to thee:	1 Per questo il Signore ha attuato la sua parola che aveva pronunciato contro di noi e contro i nostri giudici che hanno governato Israele, contro i nostri re e contro i nostri prìncipi, contro gli uomini di Giuda e d'Israele.
2 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy, for thou art a merciful God, and have pity on us: for we have sinned before thee.	2 Non è mai avvenuto sotto il cielo quanto è stato fatto in Gerusalemme, secondo ciò che è scritto nella legge di Mosè,
3 For thou remainest for ever, and shall we perish everlastingly?	3 che noi saremmo arrivati a mangiare l'uno la carne del proprio figlio e l'altro la carne della propria figlia.
4 O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, hear now the prayer of the dead of Israel, and of their children, that have sinned before thee, and have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord their God, wherefore evils have cleaved fast to us.	4 Li ha dati, poi, in potere a tutti i regni che stanno intorno, a scherno e a desolazione tra tutti i popoli fra i quali il Signore li ha dispersi.
5 Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, but think upon thy hand, and upon thy name at this time:	5 Divennero schiavi e non padroni, perché peccammo contro il Signore, Dio nostro, per non aver ascoltato la sua voce.
6 For thou art the Lord our God, and we will praise thee, O Lord:	6 Al Signore, Dio nostro, la giustizia; a noi, invece, e ai nostri padri, il rossore dei volti come avviene oggi.
7 Because for this end thou hast put thy fear in our hearts, to the intent that we should call upon thy name, and praise thee in our captivity, for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers, who sinned before thee.	7 I mali che il Signore aveva minacciato contro di noi ci sono venuti tutti addosso.
8 And behold we are at this day in our captivity, whereby thou hast scattered us to be a reproach, and a curse, and an offence, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, who departed from thee, O Lord our God.	8 Non abbiamo placato la faccia del Signore convertendoci ciascuno dai pensieri del proprio cuore malvagio.
9 Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life: give ear, that thou mayst learn wisdom.	9 Il Signore ha vigilato sopra questi mali e li ha fatti venire sopra di noi perché il Signore è giusto in tutte le opere che ci ha comandato.
10 How happeneth it, O Israel, that thou art in thy enemies' land?	10 Noi, però, non abbiamo ascoltato la sua voce camminando nei precetti che il Signore ci aveva posto davanti".
11 Thou art grown old in a strange country, thou art defiled with the dead: thou art counted with them that go down into hell.	11 "Ed ora, o Signore, Dio di Israele, che hai fatto uscire il tuo popolo dal paese di Egitto con mano robusta, con segni e prodigi, con grande potenza e con braccio elevato, e ti sei fatto un nome come avviene oggi stesso,
12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom :	12 abbiamo peccato, siamo stati empi, siamo stati ingiusti, o Signore Dio nostro, riguardo a tutti i tuoi precetti.
13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God, thou hadst surely dwelt in peace for ever.	13 Si allontani da noi il tuo sdegno, perché siamo rimasti pochi tra le nazioni dove ci hai dispersi.
14 Learn where is wisdom, where is strength, where is understanding: that thou mayst know also where is length of days and life, where is the light of the eyes, and peace.	14 Ascolta, Signore, la nostra preghiera e la nostra supplica e liberaci per te stesso e dacci grazia dinanzi a coloro che ci hanno deportato,
15 Who hath found out her place? and who hath gone in to her treasures?	15 affinché conosca tutta la terra che tu sei il Signore, Dio nostro, e che il tuo nome è stato invocato sopra Israele e sopra la sua progenie.
16 Where are the princes of the nations, and they that rule over the beasts that are upon the earth?	16 Signore, riguarda dalla tua santa casa e pensa a noi; piega, o Signore, i tuoi orecchi e ascolta.
17 That take their diversion with the birds of the air.	17 Apri, o Signore, i tuoi occhi e considera: non saranno, infatti, i morti negl'inferi, il cui spirito è stato tolto dalle loro viscere, che daranno gloria e giustizia al Signore,
18 That hoard up silver and gold, wherein men trust, and there is no end of their getting? who work in silver and are solicitous, and their works are unsearchable.	18 ma sarà piuttosto l'anima gravemente afflitta, sarà chi cammina curvo e debole, gli occhi sfiniti e l'anima indigente, che darà a te gloria e giustizia, o Signore.
19 They are cut off, and are gone down to hell, and others are risen up in their place.	19 Poiché non per i meriti dei padri nostri e dei nostri re noi rivolgiamo a te la nostra invocazione, o Signore, Dio nostro.
20 Young men have seen the light, and dwelt upon the earth: but the way of knowledge they have not known,	20 Perché tu hai riversato il tuo sdegno e la tua ira contro di noi, come avevi annunziato per mezzo dei servi tuoi, i profeti, dicendo:
21 Nor have they understood the paths thereof, neither have their children received it, it is far from their face.	21 "Così dice il Signore: Piegate il vostro collo e servite al re di Babilonia, così dimorerete nel paese che io ho dato ai padri vostri.
22 It hath not been heard of in the land of Chanaan, neither hath it been seen in Theman.	22 Ma se non volete ascoltare la voce del Signore, servendo al re di Babilonia,
23 The children of Agar also, that search after the wisdom that is of the earth, the merchants of Merrha, and of Theman, and the tellers of fables, and searchers of prudence and understanding: but the way of wisdom they have not known, neither have they remembered her paths.	23 farò cessare dalle città di Giuda e fuori di Gerusalemme la voce dell'allegria, la voce della gioia, la voce dello sposo e la voce della sposa e tutto il paese sarà desolato e senza abitanti".
24 O Israel, how great is the house of God, and how vast is the place of his possession!	24 Noi, però, non abbiamo ascoltato la tua voce servendo il re di Babilonia e così hai realizzato le parole che tu avevi pronunciato per mezzo dei tuoi servi, i profeti; cioè, che le ossa dei nostri re e le ossa dei nostri padri sarebbero state rimosse dal loro sepolcro.
25 It is great, and hath no end: it is high and immense.	25 Ora, ecco che stanno esposte al calore del giorno e al gelo della notte. Sono morti di pene atroci, di fame, di spada e di peste,
26 There were the giants, those renowned men that were from the beginning, of great stature, expert in war.	26 e hai fatto della casa, sulla quale è stato invocato il tuo nome, quello che si vede oggi stesso, a causa della malvagità della casa d'Israele e della casa di Giuda.
27 The Lord chose not them, neither did they find the way of knowledge: therefore did they perish.	27 Nonostante ciò, tu hai agito verso di noi secondo la tua totale bontà e secondo tutta la tua grande misericordia, o Signore, Dio nostro,
28 And because they had not wisdom, they perished through their folly.	28 come tu avevi parlato per mezzo del tuo servo Mosè nel giorno in cui gli ordinasti di scrivere la tua legge dinanzi a tutti i figli d'Israele dicendo:
29 Who hath gone up into heaven, and taken her, and brought her down from the clouds?	29 "Se non ascolterete la mia voce, di sicuro, questa grande moltitudine sarà ridotta a un piccolo numero tra le nazioni dove io li disperderò;
30 Who hath passed over the sea, and found her, and brought her preferably to chosen gold?	30 poiché io so che non mi daranno ascolto, essendo un popolo di cervice dura. Tuttavia nel paese del loro esilio rientreranno nel loro cuore
31 There is none that is able to know her ways, nor that can search out her paths :	31 e riconosceranno che io sono il Signore, Dio loro. Allora io darò loro un cuore e orecchi che ascoltano
32 But he that knoweth all things, knoweth her, and hath found her out with his understanding: he that prepared the earth for evermore, and filled it with cattle and fourfooted beasts:	32 ed essi mi daranno lode nel paese del loro esilio, si ricorderanno del mio nome
33 He that sendeth forth light, and it goeth: and hath called it, and it obeyeth him with trembling.	33 e si convertiranno dalla loro durezza e dalle loro azioni malvagie, poiché ricorderanno la condotta dei loro padri che peccarono contro il Signore.
34 And the stars have given light in their watches, and rejoiced:	34 Io allora li ricondurrò nel paese che giurai ai padri loro, ad Abramo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe, e ne avranno il dominio. Io li moltiplicherò e non diminuiranno.
35 They were called, and they said: Here we are: and with cheerfuIness they have shined forth to him that made them.	35 Io stabilirò con loro un'alleanza perenne per cui io sarò per essi il loro Dio ed essi saranno per me il mio popolo e non scaccerò più il popolo mio Israele dal paese che ho dato loro".
36 This is our God, and there shall no other be accounted of in comparison of him.
37 He found out all the way of knowledge, and gave it to Jacob his servant, and to Israel his beloved.
38 Afterwards he was seen upon earth, and conversed with men.
