Then Job answered, and said:1 Then Job responded by saying:
Whose helper art thou? is it of him that is weak? and dost thou hold up the arm of him that has no strength?2 Whose assistant are you? Is he weak-minded? And do you sustain the arm of him that is not strong?
To whom hast thou given counsel? perhaps to him that hath no wisdom, and thou hast shewn thy very great prudence.3 To whom have you given advice? Perhaps it is to him that has no wisdom or prudence that you have revealed your many ideas.
Whom hast thou desired to teach? was it not him that made life?4 Who is it that you wanted to teach? Was it not him that created the breath of life?
Behold the giants groan under the waters, and they that dwell with them.5 Behold, giant things groan under the waters, and they dwell with them.
Hell is naked before him, and there is no covering for destruction.6 The underworld is naked before him, and there is no covering for perdition.
He stretched out the north over the empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.7 He stretched out the North over emptiness, and he suspended the land over nothing.
He bindeth up the waters in his clouds, so that they break not out and fall down together.8 He secures the waters in his clouds, so that they do not burst forth downward all at once.
He withholdeth the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud over it.9 He holds back the face of his throne, and he stretches his cloud over it.
He hath set bounds about the waters, till light and darkness come to an end.10 He has set limits around the waters, until light and darkness shall reach their limit.
The pillars of heaven tremble, and dread at his beck.11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are frightened at his nod.
By his power the seas are suddenly gathered together, and his wisdom has struck the proud one.12 By his strength, the seas suddenly gather together, and his foresight has struck the arrogant.
His spirit hath adorned the heavens, and his obstetric hand brought forth the winding serpent.13 His spirit has adorned the heavens, and his birthing hand has brought forth the winding serpent.
Lo, these things are said in part of his ways: and seeing we have heard scarce a little drop of his word, who shall be able to behold the thunder of his greatness?14 Behold, these things have been said about his ways in part, and, since we barely have heard a small drop of his word, who will be able to gaze upon the thunder of his greatness?
