1 But Simon, of whom we spoke before, and of his country, spoke ill of Onias, as though he had incited Heliodorus to do these things, and had been the promoter of evils:	1 Il suddetto Simone, che si era fatto delatore delle ricchezze e della patria, calunniava Onia, quasi che questi avesse percosso Eliodoro e fosse stato l'artefice dei suoi mali.
2 And he presumed to call him a traitor to the kingdom, who provided for the city, and defended his nation, and wed zealous for the law of God.	2 Osava chiamare eversore della cosa pubblica il benefattore della città, il protettore dei connazionali e il custode zelante delle leggi!
3 But when the enmities proceeded so far, that murders also were committed by some of Simon's friends:	3 Ora, essendo giunta la sua ostilità a tal punto che furono compiuti omicidi da uno di coloro che erano stati arruolati dallo stesso Simone,
4 Onias considering the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, who was the governor of Celesyria and Phenicia, was outrageous, which increased the malice of Simon, went to the king,	4 Onia, considerando il danno della rivalità e il fatto che Apollonio figlio di Menesteo, governatore della Celesiria e della Fenicia, fomentava la cattiveria di Simone,
5 Not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but with a view to the common good of all the people.	5 si recò dal re, non per farsi accusatore dei cittadini, ma guardando all'utilità comune e privata di tutto il popolo.
6 For he saw that, except the king took care, it was impossible that matters should be settled in peace, or that Simon would cease from his folly.	6 Egli infatti vedeva bene che senza una decisione del re sarebbe stato impossibile che la pace tornasse ormai nella cosa pubblica e che Simone ponesse fine alla sua follia.
7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, who was called the Illustrious, had taken possession of the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias ambitiously sought the high priesthood:	7 Intanto, passato Selèuco all'altra vita e avendo Antioco, soprannominato Epifane, occupato il regno, Giasone, fratello di Onia, si procurò per corruzione il sommo sacerdozio,
8 And went to the king, promising him three hundred and sixty talents of silver, and out of other revenues fourscore talents.	8 promettendo al re, durante un incontro, trecentosessanta talenti d'argento e altri ottanta, riscossi da qualche altra entrata.
9 Besides this he promised also a hundred and fifty more, if he might have license to set him up a place for exercise, and a place for youth, and to entitle them, that were at Jerusalem, Antiochians.	9 Inoltre si impegnò a sottoscriverne altri centocinquanta, se gli fosse stato concesso di erigere, di sua autorità, un ginnasio e un'efebia e di suscitare un'associazione di antiocheni in Gerusalemme.
10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten the rule into his hands, forthwith he began to bring over his countrymen to the fashion of the heathens.	10 Avendo il re acconsentito, egli, assunto il potere, si diede subito a trasformare i connazionali alla maniera greca.
11 And abolishing those things, which had been decreed of special favour by the kings in behalf of the Jews, by the means of John the father of that Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome to make amity and alliance, he disannulled the lawful ordinances of the citizens, and brought in fashions that were perverse.	11 Mise da parte le benigne concessioni fatte dai re ai Giudei per opera di Giovanni, padre di quell'Eupolemo che poi compì l'ambasciata per l'amicizia e l'alleanza con i Romani; quindi, abolite le istituzioni patrie, instaurò consuetudini inique.
12 For he had the boldness to set up, U under the very castle, a place of exercise, and to put all the choicest youths in brothel houses.	12 Con piacere, infatti, eresse un ginnasio, proprio sotto l'acropoli, e indusse i migliori giovani a portare il petaso.
13 Now this was not the beginning, but an increase, and progress of heathenish and foreign manners, through the abominable and unheard of wickedness of Jason, that impious wretch and no priest.	13 Vi fu, in questo modo, un tale ardore di ellenismo e una tale invadenza di moda straniera, a causa della straordinaria scelleratezza dell'empio e niente affatto sommo sacerdote Giasone,
14 Insomuch that the priests were not now occupied about the offices of the altar, but despising the temple and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the games, and of the unlawful allowance thereof, and of the exercise of the discus.	14 che i sacerdoti non erano più zelanti per la liturgia dell'altare; anzi, disprezzando il tempio e trascurando i sacrifici, si affrettavano a prendere parte nella palestra, al segnale del disco, ai giochi contrari alla legge,
15 And setting nought by the honours of their fathers, they esteemed the Grecian glories for the best:	15 non facendo più alcun conto delle dignità nazionali e stimando invece ottime le glorie ellenistiche.
16 For the sake of which they incurred a dangerous contention, and followed earnestly their ordinances, and in all things they coveted to be like them, who were their enemies and murderers.	16 A causa di ciò una dura sventura piombò sopra di essi, trovando i loro nemici e giustizieri proprio in coloro per le cui istituzioni si erano fatti zelanti e a cui avevano voluto in tutto assomigliare.
17 For acting wickedly against the laws of God doth not pass unpunished: but this the time following will declare.	17 Veramente non è mai comodo agire empiamente contro le leggi divine. Ma questo lo dimostrerà il periodo storico seguente.
18 Now when the game that was used every fifth year was kept at Tyre, the king being present,	18 Celebrandosi in Tiro i giochi quinquennali alla presenza del re,
19 The wicked Jason sent from Jerusalem sinful men to carry three hundred didrachmas of silver for the sacrifice of Hercules; but the bearers thereof desired it might not be bestowed on the sacrifices, because it was not necessary, but might be deputed for other charges.	19 il turpe Giasone vi mandò, come spettatori, alcuni antiocheni di Gerusalemme, i quali recavano trecento dramme d'argento per il sacrificio a Ercole. I latori però giudicarono non essere conveniente usarle per il sacrificio, ma piuttosto di destinarle ad altra spesa.
20 So the money was appointed by him that sent it to the sacrifice of Hercules: but because of them that carried it was employed for the making of galleys.	20 Perciò quanto era stato inviato per il sacrificio a Ercole, per merito dei latori fu versato per l'allestimento di triremi.
21 Now when Apollonius the son of Mnestheus was sent into Egypt to treat with the nobles of king Philometor, and Antiochus understood that he was wholly excluded from the affairs of the kingdom, consulting his own interest, he departed thence and came to Joppe, and from thence to Jerusalem:	21 Da Apollonio, figlio di Menesteo, che era stato inviato in Egitto per l'intronizzazione del re Filometore, Antioco apprese che costui era divenuto ostile al suo governo e perciò si preoccupò della sua sicurezza. Per questa ragione, recatosi prima a Giaffa, giunse poi a Gerusalemme.
22 Where he was received in a, magnificent manner by Jason, and the city, and came in with torch lights, and with praises, end from thence he returned with his army into Phenicia.	22 Accolto magnificamente da Giasone e dalla città, fu ricevuto con fiaccolate e acclamazioni. Di qui poi marciò verso la Fenicia.
23 Three years afterwards Jason sent Menelaus, brother of the aforesaid Simon, to carry money to the king, and to bring answers from him concerning certain necessary affairs.	23 Tre anni dopo, Giasone inviò Menelao, fratello del menzionato Simone, a portare del danaro al re e per sbrigare le pratiche relative ad affari urgenti.
24 But he being recommended to the king, when he had magnified the appearance of his power, got the high priesthood for himself, by offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.	24 Questi, presentatosi al re e adulandolo con le maniere di un uomo potente, si accaparrò il sommo sacerdozio, superando Giasone per trecento talenti d'argento.
25 So having received the king's mandate, he returned bringing nothing worthy of the high priesthood: but having the mind of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.	25 Ricevute le lettere commendatizie, si presentò non portando nulla che fosse degno del sommo sacerdozio, ma piuttosto avendo in sé i sentimenti d'un tiranno crudele e le disposizioni di una bestia selvaggia.
26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being himself undermined, was driven out a fugitive into the country of the Ammonites	26 Così Giasone, che aveva ingannato il suo proprio fratello, ingannato a sua volta da un altro, fu costretto a fuggire nella regione dell'Ammanìtide.
27 So Menelaus got the principality: but as for the money he had promised to the king he took no care, when Sostratus the governor of the castle called for	27 Menelao pertanto teneva in pugno il potere, ma non si curava affatto del denaro promesso al re.
28 For to him appertained the gathering of the taxes: wherefore they were both called before the king.	28 Sòstrato allora, che era comandante dell'acropoli, gliene fece richiesta, poiché spettava a lui la riscossione delle imposte. Per questa ragione furono ambedue convocati dal re.
29 And Menelaus was removed from the priesthood, Lysimachus his brother succeeding: and Sostratus was made governor of the Cyprians.	29 Menelao perciò lasciò per sostituto nel sommo sacerdozio il proprio fratello Lisìmaco; Sòstrato lasciò Cratète, comandante dei Ciprioti.
30 When these things were in doing, it fell out that they of Tharsus and Mallos raised a sedition, because they were given for a gift to Antiochis, the king's concubine.	30 Stavano così le cose, quando accadde che gli abitanti di Tarso e di Mallo si ribellarono per essere stati dati in dono ad Antiochide, concubina del re.
31 The king therefore went in all haste to appease them, leaving Andronicus, one of his nobles, for his deputy.	31 Il re partì in fretta per sistemare l'affare e lasciò come sostituto Andronico, uno dei grandi dignitari.
32 Then Menelaus supposing that he had found a convenient time, having stolen certain vessels of gold out of the temple, gave them to Andronicus, and others he had sold at Tyre, and in the neighbouring cities.	32 Menelao, allora, stimando di cogliere la buona occasione, sottrasse alcuni oggetti d'oro del tempio e ne fece dono ad Andronico, mentre altri riuscì a venderli a Tiro e nelle città vicine.
33 Which when Onias understood most certainly, he reproved him, keeping himself in a safe place at Antioch beside Daphne.	33 Venutolo a sapere in modo sicuro, Onia protestò, dopo essersi rifugiato in un luogo inviolabile a Dafne, che è vicino ad Antiochia.
34 Whereupon Menelaus coming to Andronicus, desired him to kill Onias. And he went to Onias, and gave him his right hand with an oath, and (though he were suspected by him) persuaded him to come forth out of the sanctuary, and immediately slew him, without any regard to justice.	34 Per questo Menelao, preso Andronico in disparte, lo sollecitò ad uccidere Onia. Quello allora, recatosi da Onia e ottenutane la fiducia con inganno, dandogli perfino la destra con giuramento, lo persuase, benché rimanesse ancora in sospetto, a uscire dal suo asilo e subito lo mise a morte senza alcun rispetto per la giustizia.
35 For which cause not only the Jews, but also the other nations, conceived indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of so great a man.	35 In seguito a ciò non solo i Giudei, ma molti anche di altre nazioni restarono indignati e afflitti per l'ingiusta uccisione di quest'uomo.
36 And when the king was come back from the places of Cilicia, the Jews that were at Antioch, and also the Creaks went to him: complaining of the unjust murder of Onias.	36 Quando il re tornò dai detti luoghi della Cilicia, i Giudei della città andarono da lui insieme ad alcuni Greci, che come loro deprecavano che Onia fosse stato ucciso senza ragione.
37 Antiochus therefore was grieved in his mind for Onias, and being moved to pity, shed tears, remembering the sobriety and modesty of the deceased.	37 Antioco, dunque, rattristato fino all'anima e mosso a compassione, pianse per la prudenza e la grande moderazione del defunto.
38 And being inflamed to anger, he commanded Andronicus to be stripped of his purple, and to be led about through all the city: and that in the same place wherein he had committed the impiety against Onias, the sacrilegious wretch should be put to death, the Lord repaying him his deserved punishment.	38 Poi, infiammato d'ira, spogliò immediatamente Andronìco della porpora e gli stracciò le vesti, lo fece condurre per tutta la città fino al luogo in cui aveva commesso la sua empietà contro Onia e lì stesso eliminò questo sanguinario, rendendogli il Signore la degna punizione.
39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed by Lysimachus in the temple by the counsel of Menelaus, and the rumour of it was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, a great quantity of gold being already carried away.	39 Intanto molti furti sacrileghi erano stati compiuti in città da Lisimaco col consenso di Menelao. Essendosene sparsa la notizia anche al di fuori, il popolo insorse contro Lisimaco, quando già molti oggetti preziosi erano andati dispersi.
40 Wherefore the multitude making an insurrection, and their minds being filled with anger, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began to use violence, one Tyrannus being captain, a man far gone both in age, and in madness.	40 La folla era eccitata e piena d'ira. Lisimaco allora, armati tremila uomini, cominciò a far commettere violenze sotto la guida di un certo Aurano, uomo avanzato in età e non meno in follia.
41 But when they perceived the attempt of Lysimachus, some caught up stones, some strong clubs: and some threw ashes upon Lysimachus,	41 Accortisi dell'attacco di Lisimaco, quelli del popolo afferrarono chi pietre e chi robusti bastoni; mentre alcuni raccoglievano a manate la polvere da terra, e si lanciarono alla rinfusa contro gli uomini di Lisimaco.
42 And many of them were wounded, and some struck down to the ground, but all were put to flight: and as for the sacrilegious fellow himself, they slew him beside the treasury.	42 In tal modo ne coprirono molti di ferite e altri ne abbatterono; li costrinsero tutti alla fuga e misero a morte lo stesso ladro sacrilego presso la camera del tesoro.
43 Now concerning these matters, an accusation was laid against Menelaus.	43 Intorno a questi fatti fu poi istituito un processo contro Menelao.
44 And when the king was come to Tyre, three men were sent from the ancients to plead the cause before him.	44 Giunto il re a Tiro, tre uomini inviati dal Consiglio degli anziani fecero la loro requisitoria contro di lui.
45 But Menelaus being convicted, promised Ptolemee to give him much money to persuade the king to favour him.	45 Menelao, vedendosi già battuto, promise somme rilevanti a Tolomeo, figlio di Dorimene, perché persuadesse il re.
46 So Ptolemee went to the king in a certain court where he was, as it were to cool himself, and brought him to be of another mind:	46 Tolomeo allora, condotto il re sotto un porticato come per fargli prendere aria, gli fece cambiare parere.
47 So Menelaus who was guilty of all the evil, was acquitted by him of the accusations: and those poor men, who, if they had pleaded their cause even before Scythians, should have been judged innocent, were condemned to death.	47 Così egli mandò assolto dalle accuse Menelao, che era la causa di tutto quel male; condannò invece a morte quegli infelici i quali, anche se avessero parlato davanti agli Sciti, sarebbero stati prosciolti come innocenti.
48 Thus they that prosecuted the cause for the city, and for the people, and the sacred vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.	48 Immediatamente subirono l'ingiusta pena coloro che avevano parlato in difesa della città, del popolo e dei vasi sacri.
49 Wherefore even the Tyrians being moved with indignation, were liberal towards their burial.	49 Per questo motivo perfino gli abitanti di Tiro, che avevano sdegno per il male commesso, provvidero magnificamente all'occorrente per la loro sepoltura.
50 And so through the covetousness of them that were in power, Menelaus continued in authority, increasing in malice to the betraying of the citizens.	50 Ma Menelao, grazie alla cupidigia dei potenti, rimase al potere, crescendo in malvagità e facendosi grande insidiatore dei concittadini.
