1 Now it is found in the descriptions of Jeremias the prophet, that he commanded them that went into captivity, to take the fire, as it hath been signified, and how he gave charge to them that were carried away into captivity.	1 Se encuentra en los documentos que el profeta Jeremías mandó a los deportados que tomaran fuego como ya se ha indicado;
2 And how he gave them the law that they should not forget the commandments of the Lord, and that they should not err in their minds, seeing the idols of gold, and silver, and the ornaments of them.	2 y cómo el profeta, después de darles la Ley, ordenó a los deportados que no se olvidaran de los preceptos del Señor ni se desviaran en sus pensamientos al ver ídolos de oro y plata y las galas que los envolvían.
3 And with other such like speeches, he exhorted them that they would not remove the law from their heart.	3 Entre otras cosas, les exhortaba a no apartar la Ley de sus corazones.
4 It was also contained in the same writing, how the prophet, being warned by God, commanded that the tabernacle and the ark should accompany him, till he came forth to the mountain where Moses went up, and saw the inheritance of God.	4 Se decía también en el escrito cómo el profeta, después de una revelación, mandó llevar consigo la Tienda y el arca; y cómo salió hacia el monte donde Moisés había subido para contemplar la heredad de Dios.
5 And when Jeremias came thither he found a hollow cave: and he carried in thither the tabernacle, and the ark, and the altar of incense, and so stopped the door.	5 Y cuando llegó Jeremías, encontró una estancia en forma de cueva; allí metió la Tienda, el arca y el altar del incienso, y tapó la entrada.
6 Then some of them that followed him, came up to mark the place: but they could not And it.	6 Volvieron algunos de sus acompañantes para marcar el camino, pero no pudieron encontrarlo.
7 And when Jeremias perceived it, he blamed them, saying: The place shall be unknown, till God gather together the congregation of the people, and receive them to mercy.	7 En cuanto Jeremías lo supo, les reprendió diciéndoles: «Este lugar quedará desconocido hasta que Dios vuelva a reunir a su pueblo y le sea propicio.
8 And then the Lord will shew these things, and the majesty of the Lord shall appear, and there shall be a cloud as it was also shewed to Moses, and he shewed it when Solomon prayed that the place might be sanctified to the great God.	8 El Señor entonces mostrará todo esto; y aparecerá la gloria del Señor y la Nube, como se mostraba en tiempo de Moisés, cuando Salomón rogó que el Lugar fuera solemnemente consagrado».
9 For he treated wisdom in a magnificent manner: and like a wise man, he offered the sacrifice of the dedication, and of the finishing of the temple.	9 Se explicaba también cómo éste, dotado de sabiduría, ofreció el sacrificio de la dedicación y la terminación del Templo.
10 And as Moses prayed to the Lord and fire came down from heaven, and consumed the holocaust: so Solomon also prayed, and fire came down from heaven and consumed the holocaust.	10 Como Moisés oró al Señor y bajó del cielo fuego, que devoró las ofrendas del sacrificio, así también oró Salomón y bajó fuego que consumió los holocaustos.
11 And Moses said: Because the sin offering was not eaten, it was consumed.	11 Moisés había dicho: «La víctima por el pecado ha sido consumida por no haber sido comida».
12 So Solomon also celebrated the dedication eight days.	12 Salomón celebró igualmente los ocho días de fiesta.
13 And these same things were set down in the memoirs and commentaries of Nehemias: and how he made a library, and gathered together out of the countries, the books both of the prophets, and of David, and the epistles of the kings. and concerning the holy gifts.	13 Lo mismo se narraba también en los archivos y en las Memorias del tiempo de Nehemías; y cómo éste, para fundar una biblioteca, reunió los libros referentes a los reyes y a los profetas, los de David y las cartas de los reyes acerca de las ofrendas.
14 And in like manner Judas also gathered together all such things as were lost by the war we had, and they are in our possession.	14 De igual modo Judas reunió todos los libros dispersos a causa de la guerra que sufrimos, los cuales están en nuestras manos.
15 Wherefore if you want these things, send some that may fetch them to you.	15 Por tanto, si tenéis necesidad de ellos, enviad a quienes os los lleven.
16 As we are then about to celebrate the purification, we have written unto you: and you shall do well, if you keep the same days.	16 A punto ya de celebrar la purificación, os escribimos: Bien haréis también en celebrar estos días.
17 And we hope that God who hath delivered his people, and hath rendered to all the inheritance, and the kingdom, and the priesthood, and the sanctuary,	17 El Dios que salvó a todo su pueblo y que a todos otorgó la heredad, el reino, el sacerdocio y la santidad,
18 As he promised in the law, will shortly have mercy upon us, and will gather us together from every land under heaven into the holy place.	18 como había prometido por la Ley, el mismo Dios, como esperamos, se apiadará pronto de nosotros y nos reunirá de todas partes bajo el cielo en el Lugar Santo; pues nos ha sacado de grandes males y ha purificado el Lugar.
19 For he hath delivered us out of great perils, and hath cleansed the place.	19 La historia de Judas Macabeo y de sus hermanos, la purificación del más grande Templo, la dedicación del altar,
20 Now as concerning Judas Machabeus. and his brethren, and the purification of the great temple, and the dedication o the altar:	20 las guerras contra Antíoco Epífanes y su hijo Eupátor,
21 As also the wars against Antioch the Illustrious, and his son Eupator:	21 y las manifestaciones celestiales en favor de los que combatieron viril y gloriosamente por el Judaísmo, de suerte que, aun siendo pocos, saquearon toda la región, ahuyentaron las hordas bárbaras,
22 And the manifestations that from heaven to them, that behaved themselves manfully on the behalf of the Jews, so that, being but a few, they made themselves masters of the whole country, and put to flight; the barbarous multitude :	22 recuperaron el Templo famoso en todo el mundo, liberaron la ciudad y restablecieron las leyes que estaban a punto de ser abolidas, pues el Señor se mostró propicio hacia ellos con toda benignidad;
23 And recovered again the most renowned temple in all the world, and delivered the city, and restored the laws that were abolished, the Lord with all clemency shewing mercy to them.	23 todo esto, expuesto en cinco libros por Jasón de Cirene, intentaremos nosotros compendiarlo en uno solo.
24 And all such things as have been comprised in five books by Jason of Cyrene, we have attempted to abridge in one book.	24 Porque al considerar la marea de números y la dificultad existente, por la amplitud de la materia, para los que quieren sumergirse en los relatos de la historia,
25 For considering the multitude of books, and the difficulty that they find that desire to undertake the narrations of histories, because of the multitude of the matter,	25 nos hemos preocupado por ofrecer algún atractivo a los que desean leer, facilidad a los que gustan retenerlo de memoria, y utilidad a cualquiera que lo lea.
26 We have taken care for those indeed that are willing to read, that it might be a pleasure of mind: and for the studious, that they may more easily commit to memory: and that all that read might receive profit.	26 Para nosotros, que nos hemos encargado de la fatigosa labor de este resumen, no es fácil la tarea, sino de sudores y desvelos,
27 And as to ourselves indeed, in undertaking this work of abridging, we have taken in hand no easy task, yea rather a business full of watching and sweat.	27 como tampoco al que prepara un banquete y busca el provecho de los demás le resulta esto cómodo. Sin embargo, esperando la gratitud de muchos, soportamos con gusto esta fatiga,
28 But as they that prepare a feast, and seek to satisfy the will of others: for the sake of many, we willingly undergo the labour.	28 dejando al historiador la tarea de precisar cada suceso y esforzándonos por seguir las normas de un resumen.
29 Leaving to the authors the exact handling of every particular, and as for ourselves, according to the plan proposed, studying to be brief.	29 Pues así como al arquitecto de una casa nueva corresponde la preocupación por la estructura entera; y, en cambio, al encargado de la encáustica y pinturas, el cuidado de lo necesario para la decoración, lo mismo me parece de nosotros:
30 For as the master builder of a new house must have care of the whole building: but he that taketh care to paint it, must seek out fit things for the adorning of it: so must it be judged for us.	30 profundizar, revolver las cuestiones y examinar punto por punto corresponde al que compone la historia;
31 For to collect all that is to be known, to put the discourse in order, and curiously to discuss every particular point, is the duty of the author of a history:	31 pero buscar concisión al exponer y renunciar a tratar el asunto de forma exhaustiva debe concederse al divulgador.
32 But to pursue brevity of speech, and to avoid nice declarations of things, is to be granted to him that maketh an abridgment.	32 Comencemos, por tanto, desde ahora la narración, después de haber abundado tanto en los preliminares; pues sería absurdo abundar en lo que antecede a la historia y ser breve en la historia misma.
33 Here then we will begin the narration: let this be enough by way of a preface: for it is a foolish thing to make a long prologue, and to be short in the story itself.
