DOUAI-RHEIMSBIBBIA RICCIOTTI
Then John came up from Gazara, and told Simon his father what Cendebeus had done against their people.1 - Allora Giovanni uscì di Gazerà, ed annunziò a Simone suo padre quel che faceva Cendebeo nel loro popolo.
And Simon called his two eldest sons, Judas and John, and said to them: I and my brethren, and my father's house, have fought against the enemies of Israel from our youth even to this day: and things have prospered so well in our hands that we have delivered Israel oftentimes.2 Simone chiamò i due figli maggiori Giuda e Giovanni, e disse loro: « io ed i miei fratelli, e la stirpe del padre mio, abbiam combattuto i nemici d'Israele, dalla mia giovinezza inaino ad oggi, ed abbiamo avuto qualche volta la ventura di liberar Israele.
And now I am old, but be you instead of me, and my brethren, and go out, and fight for our nation: and the help from heaven be with you.3 Ora però son vecchio; ma siate voi in mio luogo, e miei fratelli; uscite a combatter per la nostra nazione, e l’aiuto del cielo sla con voi ».
Then he chose out of the country twenty thousand fighting men, and horsemen, and they went forth against Cendebeus: and they rested in Modin.4 E scelse dalla regione ventimila uomini di guerra, e cavalieri. Essi mossero incontro a Cendebeo, e pernottarono in Modili.
And they arose in the morning, and went into the plain: and behold a very great army of footmen and horsemen came against them, and there was a running river between them.5 Al mattino, si levarono, e s’avanzaron nella pianura. Ed ecco di contro a loro un esercito copioso di fanti e di cavalieri, ed un torrente li divideva.
And he and his people pitched their camp over against them, and he saw that the people were afraid to go over the river, so he went over first: then the men seeing him, passed over after him.6 [Giovanni] mosse le file direttamente contro a loro, egli e la sua gente; e vedendo che la turba esitava a valicar il torrente, lo valicò egli per primo; i suoi uomini lo videro, e passaron dietro a lui.
And he divided the people, and set the horsemen in the midst of the footmen: but the horsemen of the enemies were very numerous.7 Allora divise la sua gente, e pose i cavalieri in mezzo ai pedoni, perchè la cavalleria nemica era numerosissima.
And they sounded the holy trumpets: and Cendebeus and his army were put to flight: and there fell many of them wounded, and the rest fled into the strong hold.8 Poi dettero flato alle trombe sacre, e Cendebeo e le sue schiere furon messi in fuga ; molti ne caddero trafitti, ed i rimanenti fuggirono nella fortezza.
At that time Judas John's brother was wounded: but John pursued after them, till he came to Cedron, which he had built:9 Restò ferito Giuda fratello di Giovanni; Giovanni poi inseguì i fuggiaschi, così che giunse a Gedor che [Cendebeo] aveva ricostruita.
And they fled even to the towers that were in the fields of Azotus, and he burnt them with fire. And there fell of them two thousand men, and he returned into Judea in peace.10 Quelli fuggirono sino alle torri del piano d’Azoto, e Giovanni v’appiccò il fuoco; vi morirono duemila uomini, ed egli se ne tornò in Giudea senz’ostacoli.
Now Ptolemee the son of Abobus was appointed captain in the plain of Jericho, and he had abundance of silver and gold,11 Ora, Tolomeo figlio di Abobi era stato messo a capo della regione di Gerico, ed avevan argento ed oro in gran quantità,
For he was son in law of the high priest.12 essendo genero del sommo sacerdote.
And his heart was lifted up, and he designed to make himself master of the country, and he purposed treachery against Simon, and his sons, to destroy them.13 Ma s’inorgoglì, ed ambiva d’esser signore della regione, e meditava insidie contro Simone e i suoi figli, per toglierli di mezzo.
Now Simon, as he was going through the cities that were in the country of Judea, and taking care for the good ordering of them, went down to Jericho, he and Mathathias and Judas his sons, in the year one hundred and seventy-seven, the eleventh month: the same is the month Sabath.14 Simone dunque, visitando le città del territorio della Giudea per prenderne cura, venne a Gerico, egli, e Matatia e Giuda suoi figli, l’anno centosettantasette, l’undecimo mese, e mese di Sabat.
And the son of Abobus received them deceitfully into a little fortress, that is called Doch which he had built: and he made them a great feast, and hid men there.15 Il figlio d’Abobi, per ingannarli, li ricevè in una piccola fortezza da lui edificata, detta Doch. Fece loro un gran convito, e vi mise uomini in agguato.
And when Simon and his sons had drunk plentifully, Ptolemee and his men rose up and took their weapons, and entered into the banqueting place, and slew him, and his two sons, and some of his servants.16 Quando Simone e i suoi figli fu reno rallegrati dal vino, Tolomeo si levò co' suoi uomini, presero le armi, irruppero nella sala del convito ed uccisero Simone e i suol due figli, ed alcuni del suo seguito
And he committed a great treachery in Israel, and rendered evil for good.17 facendo una gran perfidia In Israele, e rendendo male per bene.
And Ptolemee wrote these things and sent to the king that he should send him an army to aid him, and he would deliver him the country, and their cities, and tributes.18 Di poi, Tolomeo scrisse al re queste cose, e mandò a chiedergli che gli mandasse in aiuto un esercito, e gli desse signoria sulla regione e le città e i tributi.
And he sent others to Gazara to kill John: and to the tribunes he sent letters to come to him, and that he would give them silver, and gold, and gifts.19 Altri mandò in Gazara per levar di mezzo Giovanni; ed al tribuni di lui inviò lettere perchè passassero dalla sua parte, che egli darebbe loro argento ed oro e regali.
And he sent others to take Jerusalem, and the mountain of the temple.20 Altri poi mandò ad occupare Gerusalemme ed il monte del tempio.
Now one running before, told John in Gazara, that his father and his brethren were slain, and that he hath sent men to kill thee also.21 Ma uno corse avanti, ed annunziò a Giovanni in Gazara che il padre ed i fratelli eran morti, e che: «Ora manda ad uccidere anche te ».
But when he heard it he was exceedingly afraid: and he apprehended the men that came to kill him, and he put them to death: for he knew that they sought to make him away.22 Quando ciò seppe, s’intimorì grandemente; e fatti prendere quelli ch’eran venuti a’ suoi danni, li mise a morte. Conobbe infatti che cercavan d'uccider lui.
And as concerning the rest of the acts of John, and his wars, and the worthy deeds, which he bravely achieved, and the building of the walls, which he made, and the things that he did:23 Quanto agli altri eventi di Giovanni, ed alle sue guerre, ed alle imprese da lui fortemente condotte, ed alle mura da lui ricostruite, e le altre sue geste,
Behold these are written in the book of the days of his priesthood, from the time he was made high priest after his father.24 ecco che sono scritte nelle cronache del suo sacerdozio, da che fu fatto principe de' sacerdoti dopo il padre suo.
