DOUAI-RHEIMSGREEK BIBLE
And king Antiochus the son of Demetrius sent letters from the isles of the sea to Simon the priest, and prince of the nation of the Jews, and to all the people:1 και απεστειλεν αντιοχος υιος δημητριου του βασιλεως επιστολας απο των νησων της θαλασσης σιμωνι ιερει και εθναρχη των ιουδαιων και παντι τω εθνει
And the contents were these: King Antiochus to Simon the high priest, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.2 και ησαν περιεχουσαι τον τροπον τουτον βασιλευς αντιοχος σιμωνι ιερει μεγαλω και εθναρχη και εθνει ιουδαιων χαιρειν
Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers, and my purpose is to challenge the kingdom, and to restore it to its former estate: and I have chosen a great army, and have built ships of war.3 επει τινες λοιμοι κατεκρατησαν της βασιλειας των πατερων ημων βουλομαι δε αντιποιησασθαι της βασιλειας οπως αποκαταστησω αυτην ως ην το προτερον εξενολογησα δε πληθος δυναμεων και κατεσκευασα πλοια πολεμικα
And I design to go through the country that I may take revenge of them that have destroyed our country, and that have made many cities desolate in my realm.4 βουλομαι δε εκβηναι κατα την χωραν οπως μετελθω τους κατεφθαρκοτας την χωραν ημων και τους ηρημωκοτας πολεις πολλας εν τη βασιλεια μου
Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations which all the kings before me remitted to thee, and what other gifts soever they remitted to thee:5 νυν ουν ιστημι σοι παντα τα αφεματα α αφηκαν σοι οι προ εμου βασιλεις και οσα αλλα δοματα αφηκαν σοι
And I give thee leave to coin thy own money in thy country:6 και επετρεψα σοι ποιησαι κομμα ιδιον νομισμα τη χωρα σου
And let Jerusalem be holy and free, and all the armour that hath been made, and the fortresses which thou hast built, and which thou keepest in thy hands, let them remain to thee.7 ιερουσαλημ δε και τα αγια ειναι ελευθερα και παντα τα οπλα οσα κατεσκευασας και τα οχυρωματα α ωκοδομησας ων κρατεις μενετω σοι
And all that is due to the king, and what should be the king's hereafter, from this present and for ever, is forgiven thee.8 και παν οφειλημα βασιλικον και τα εσομενα βασιλικα απο του νυν και εις τον απαντα χρονον αφιεσθω σοι
And when we shall have recovered our kingdom, we will glorify thee, and thy nation, and the temple with great glory, so that your glory shall be made manifest in all the earth.9 ως δ' αν κρατησωμεν της βασιλειας ημων δοξασομεν σε και το εθνος σου και το ιερον δοξη μεγαλη ωστε φανεραν γενεσθαι την δοξαν υμων εν παση τη γη
In the year one hundred and seventy-four Antiochus entered into the land of this fathers, and all the forces assembled to him, so that few were left with Tryphon.10 ετους τεταρτου και εβδομηκοστου και εκατοστου εξηλθεν αντιοχος εις την γην των πατερων αυτου και συνηλθον προς αυτον πασαι αι δυναμεις ωστε ολιγους ειναι συν τρυφωνι
And king Antiochus pursued after him, and he fled along by the sea coast and came to Dora.11 και εδιωξεν αυτον αντιοχος και ηλθεν εις δωρα φευγων την επι θαλασσης
For he perceived that evils were gathered together upon him, and his troops had forsaken him.12 ηδει γαρ οτι επισυνηκται επ' αυτον τα κακα και αφηκαν αυτον αι δυναμεις
And Antiochus camped above Dora with a hundred and twenty thousand men of war, and eight thousand horsemen:13 και παρενεβαλεν αντιοχος επι δωρα και συν αυτω δωδεκα μυριαδες ανδρων πολεμιστων και οκτακισχιλια ιππος
And he invested the city, and the ships drew near by sea: and they annoyed the city by land, and by sea, and suffered none to come in, or to go out.14 και εκυκλωσεν την πολιν και τα πλοια απο θαλασσης συνηψαν και εθλιβε την πολιν απο της γης και της θαλασσης και ουκ ειασεν ουδενα εκπορευεσθαι ουδε εισπορευεσθαι
And Numenius, and they that had been with him, came from the city of Rome, having letters written to the kings, and countries, the contents whereof were these:15 και ηλθεν νουμηνιος και οι παρ' αυτου εκ ρωμης εχοντες επιστολας τοις βασιλευσιν και ταις χωραις εν αις εγεγραπτο ταδε
Lucius the consul of the Romans, to king Ptolemee, greeting.16 λευκιος υπατος ρωμαιων πτολεμαιω βασιλει χαιρειν
The ambassadors of the Jews our friends came to us, to renew the former friendship and alliance, being sent from Simon the high priest, and the people of the Jews.17 οι πρεσβευται των ιουδαιων ηλθον προς ημας φιλοι ημων και συμμαχοι ανανεουμενοι την εξ αρχης φιλιαν και συμμαχιαν απεσταλμενοι απο σιμωνος του αρχιερεως και του δημου των ιουδαιων
And they brought also a shield of gold of a thousand pounds.18 ηνεγκαν δε ασπιδα χρυσην απο μνων χιλιων
It hath seemed good therefore to us to write to the kings, and countries, that they should do them no harm, nor fight against them, their cities, or countries: and that they should give no aid to them that fight against them.19 ηρεσεν ουν ημιν γραψαι τοις βασιλευσιν και ταις χωραις οπως μη εκζητησωσιν αυτοις κακα και μη πολεμησωσιν αυτους και τας πολεις αυτων και την χωραν αυτων και ινα μη συμμαχωσιν τοις πολεμουσιν προς αυτους
And it hath seemed good to us to received the shield of them.20 εδοξεν δε ημιν δεξασθαι την ασπιδα παρ' αυτων
If therefore any pestilent men are fled out of their country to you, deliver them to Simon the high priest, that he may punish them according to their law.21 ει τινες ουν λοιμοι διαπεφευγασιν εκ της χωρας αυτων προς υμας παραδοτε αυτους σιμωνι τω αρχιερει οπως εκδικηση αυτους κατα τον νομον αυτων
These same things were written to king Demetrius, and to Attalus, and to Ariarathes, and to Arsaces,22 και ταυτα εγραψεν δημητριω τω βασιλει και ατταλω και αριαραθη και αρσακη
And to all the countries; and to Lampsacus, and to the Spartans, and to Delus, and Myndus, and Sicyon, and Caria, and Samus, and Pamphylia, and Lycia, and Alicarnassus, and Cos, and Side, and Aradus, and Rhodes, and Phaselis, and Gortyna, and Gnidus, and Cyprus, and Cyrene.23 και εις πασας τας χωρας και σαμψαμη και σπαρτιαταις και εις δηλον και εις μυνδον και εις σικυωνα και εις την καριαν και εις σαμον και εις την παμφυλιαν και εις λυκιαν και εις αλικαρνασσον και εις ροδον και εις φασηλιδα και εις κω και εις σιδην και εις αραδον και γορτυναν και κνιδον και κυπρον και κυρηνην
And they wrote a copy thereof to Simon the high priest, and to the people of the Jews.24 το δε αντιγραφον τουτων εγραψαν σιμωνι τω αρχιερει
But king Antiochus moved his camp to Dora the second time, assaulting it continually, and making engines: and shut up Tryphon, that he could not go out.25 αντιοχος δε ο βασιλευς παρενεβαλεν επι δωρα εν τη δευτερα προσαγων δια παντος αυτη τας χειρας και μηχανας ποιουμενος και συνεκλεισεν τον τρυφωνα του εκπορευεσθαι και εισπορευεσθαι
And Simon sent to him two thousand chosen men to aid him, silver also, and gold, and abundance of furniture.26 και απεστειλεν αυτω σιμων δισχιλιους ανδρας εκλεκτους συμμαχησαι αυτω και αργυριον και χρυσιον και σκευη ικανα
And he would not receive them, but broke all the covenant that he had made with him before, and alienated himself from him.27 και ουκ ηβουλετο αυτα δεξασθαι αλλα ηθετησεν παντα οσα συνεθετο αυτω το προτερον και ηλλοτριουτο αυτω
And he sent to him Athenobius one of his friends, to treat with him, saying: You hold Joppe, and Gazara, and the castle that is in Jerusalem, which are cities of my kingdom:28 και απεστειλεν προς αυτον αθηνοβιον ενα των φιλων αυτου κοινολογησομενον αυτω λεγων υμεις κατακρατειτε της ιοππης και γαζαρων και της ακρας της εν ιερουσαλημ πολεις της βασιλειας μου
Their borders you have wasted, and you have made great havock in the land, and have got the dominion of many places in my kingdom.29 τα ορια αυτων ηρημωσατε και εποιησατε πληγην μεγαλην επι της γης και εκυριευσατε τοπων πολλων εν τη βασιλεια μου
Now therefore deliver up the cities that you have taken, and the tributes of the places whereof you have gotten the dominion without the borders of Judea.30 νυν ουν παραδοτε τας πολεις ας κατελαβεσθε και τους φορους των τοπων ων κατεκυριευσατε εκτος των οριων της ιουδαιας
But if not, give me for them five hundred talents of silver, and for the havock that you have made, and the tributes of the cities other five hundred talents: or else we will come and fight against you.31 ει δε μη δοτε αντ' αυτων πεντακοσια ταλαντα αργυριου και της καταφθορας ης κατεφθαρκατε και των φορων των πολεων αλλα ταλαντα πεντακοσια ει δε μη παραγενομενοι εκπολεμησομεν υμας
So Athenobius the king's friend came to Jerusalem, and saw the glory of Simon and his magnificence in gold, and silver, and his great equipage, and he was astonished, and told him the king's words.32 και ηλθεν αθηνοβιος ο φιλος του βασιλεως εις ιερουσαλημ και ειδεν την δοξαν σιμωνος και κυλικειον μετα χρυσωματων και αργυρωματων και παραστασιν ικανην και εξιστατο και απηγγειλεν αυτω τους λογους του βασιλεως
And Simon answered him, and said to him: We have neither taken other men's land, neither do we hold that which is other men's: but the inheritance of our fathers, which was for some time unjustly possessed by our enemies.33 και αποκριθεις σιμων ειπεν αυτω ουτε γην αλλοτριαν ειληφαμεν ουτε αλλοτριων κεκρατηκαμεν αλλα της κληρονομιας των πατερων ημων υπο δε εχθρων ημων ακριτως εν τινι καιρω κατεκρατηθη
But we having opportunity claim the inheritance of our fathers.34 ημεις δε καιρον εχοντες αντεχομεθα της κληρονομιας των πατερων ημων
And as to thy complaints concerning Joppe and Gazara, they did great harm to the people, and to our country: yet for these we will give a hundred talents. And Athenobius answered him not a word:35 περι δε ιοππης και γαζαρων ων αιτεις αυται εποιουν εν τω λαω πληγην μεγαλην και την χωραν ημων τουτων δωσομεν ταλαντα εκατον
But returning in a rage to the king, made report to him of these words, and of the glory of Simon, and of all that he had seen, and the king was exceeding angry.36 και ουκ απεκριθη αυτω λογον απεστρεψεν δε μετα θυμου προς τον βασιλεα και απηγγειλεν αυτω τους λογους τουτους και την δοξαν σιμωνος και παντα οσα ειδεν και ωργισθη ο βασιλευς οργην μεγαλην
And Tryphon fled away by ship to Orthosias.37 τρυφων δε εμβας εις πλοιον εφυγεν εις ορθωσιαν
And the king appointed Cendebeus captain of the sea coast, and gave him an army of footmen and horsemen.38 και κατεστησεν ο βασιλευς τον κενδεβαιον επιστρατηγον της παραλιας και δυναμεις πεζικας και ιππικας εδωκεν αυτω
And he commanded him to march with his army towards Judea: and he commanded him to build up Gedor, and to fortify the gates of the city, and to war against the people. But the king himself pursued after Tryphon.39 και ενετειλατο αυτω παρεμβαλλειν κατα προσωπον της ιουδαιας και ενετειλατο αυτω οικοδομησαι την κεδρων και οχυρωσαι τας πυλας και οπως πολεμη τον λαον ο δε βασιλευς εδιωκε τον τρυφωνα
And Cendebeus came to Jamnia, and began to provoke the people, and to ravage Judea, and to take the people prisoners, and to kill, and to build Gedor.40 και παρεγενηθη κενδεβαιος εις ιαμνειαν και ηρξατο του ερεθιζειν τον λαον και εμβατευειν εις την ιουδαιαν και αιχμαλωτιζειν τον λαον και φονευειν
And he placed there horsemen, and an army: that they might issue forth, and make incursions upon the ways of Judea, as the king had commanded him.41 και ωκοδομησεν την κεδρων και απεταξεν εκει ιππεις και δυναμεις οπως εκπορευομενοι εξοδευωσιν τας οδους της ιουδαιας καθα συνεταξεν αυτω ο βασιλευς
