Exodus 18

1 And when Jethro the priest of Madian, the kinsman of Moses, had heard all the things that God had done to Moses, and to Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought forth Israel out of Egypt,	1 Jéthro, prêtre de Madiân, beau-père de Moïse, entendit raconter tout ce que Dieu avait fait pourMoïse et pour Israël son peuple: comment Yahvé avait fait sortir Israël d'Egypte.
2 He took Sephora the wife of Moses whom he had sent back:	2 Jéthro, le beau-père de Moïse, prit Cippora, la femme de Moïse, après qu'il l'eut renvoyée,
3 And her two sons, of whom one was called Gersam, his father saying: I have been a stranger in a foreign country.	3 ainsi que ses deux fils. L'un s'appelait Gershom car, avait-il dit, "Je suis un immigré en terreétrangère",
4 And the other Eliezer: For the God of my father, said he, is my helper, and hath delivered me from the sword of Pharao.	4 l'autre s'appelait Eliézer car, "le Dieu de mon père est mon secours et m'a délivré de l'épée dePharaon."
5 And Jethro the kinsman of Moses came with his sons and his wife, to Moses into the desert, where he was camped by the mountain of God.	5 Jéthro, le beau-père de Moïse, vint trouver Moïse avec ses fils et sa femme au désert où il campait, àla montagne de Dieu.
6 And he sent word to Moses, saying: I Jethro thy kinsman come to thee, and thy wife, and thy two sons with her.	6 L'on dit à Moïse: "Voici ton beau-père Jéthro qui vient vers toi, accompagné de ta femme et sesdeux fils."
7 And he went out to meet his kinsman, and worshipped and kissed him: and they saluted one another with words of peace. And when he was come into the tent,	7 Moïse sortit à la rencontre de son beau-père, se prosterna devant lui, l'embrassa et, s'étantmutuellement interrogés sur leur santé, ils se rendirent à la tente.
8 Moses told his kinsman all that the Lord had done to Pharao, and the Egyptians, in favour of Israel: and all the labour which had befallen them in the journey, and that the Lord had delivered them.	8 Moïse raconta à son beau-père tout ce que Yahvé avait fait à Pharaon et aux Egyptiens à caused'Israël, ainsi que toutes les tribulations qu'ils avaient rencontrées en chemin, et dont Yahvé les avait délivrés.
9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the good things that the Lord had done to Israel, because he had delivered them out of the hands of the Egyptians.	9 Jéthro se réjouit de tout le bien que Yahvé avait fait à Israël, de ce qu'il l'avait délivré de la main desEgyptiens.
10 And he said: Blessed is the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of Pharao, and out of the hand of the Egyptians, who hath delivered his people out of the hand of Egypt.	10 Jéthro dit alors: "Béni soit Yahvé qui vous a délivrés de la main des Egyptiens et de la main dePharaon, qui a délivré le peuple de la sujétion égyptienne.
11 Now I know that the Lord is great above all gods: because they dealt proudly against them.	11 Maintenant je sais que Yahvé est plus grand que tous les dieux..."
12 So Jethro the kinsman of Moses offered holocausts and sacrifices to God: and Aaron and all the ancients of Israel came, to eat bread with them before God.	12 Jéthro, le beau-père de Moïse, offrit à Dieu un holocauste et des sacrifices. Aaron et tous lesanciens d'Israël vinrent manger avec le beau-père de Moïse en présence de Dieu.
13 And the next day Moses sat, to judge the people, who stood by Moses from morning until night.	13 Le lendemain, Moïse s'assit pour rendre la justice au peuple, tandis que le peuple demeurait deboutauprès de lui du matin au soir.
14 And when his kinsman had seen all things that he did among the people, he said: What is it that thou dost among the people? Why sittest thou alone, and all the people wait from morning till night.	14 Le beau-père de Moïse, voyant tout ce qu'il faisait pour le peuple, lui dit: "Comment t'y prends-tupour traiter seul les affaires du peuple? Pourquoi sièges-tu seul alors que tout le peuple se tient auprès de toi dumatin au soir?"
15 And Moses answered him: The people come to me to seek the judgment of God.	15 Moïse dit à son beau-père: "C'est que le peuple vient à moi pour consulter Dieu.
16 And when any controversy falleth out among them, they come to me to judge between them, and to shew the precepts of God, and his laws.	16 Lorsqu'ils ont une affaire, ils viennent à moi. Je juge entre l'un et l'autre et je leur fais connaître lesdécrets de Dieu et ses lois."
17 But he said: The thing thou dost is not good.	17 Le beau-père de Moïse lui dit: "Tu t'y prends mal!
18 Thou are spent with foolish labour, both thou and this people that is with thee: the business is above thy strength, thou alone canst not bear it.	18 A coup sûr tu t'épuiseras, toi et le peuple qui est avec toi, car la tâche est trop lourde pour toi; tu nepourras pas l'accomplir seul.
19 But hear my words and counsels, and God shall be with thee. Be thou to the people in those things that pertain to God, to bring their words to him:	19 Maintenant écoute le conseil que je vais te donner pour que Dieu soit avec toi. Tiens-toi à la placedu peuple devant Dieu, et introduis toi-même leurs causes auprès de Dieu.
20 And to shew the people the ceremonies and the manner of worshipping, and the way wherein they ought to walk, and the work that they ought to do.	20 Instruis-les des décrets et des lois, fais-leur connaître la voie à suivre et la conduite à tenir.
21 And provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, in whom there is truth, and that hate avarice, and appoint of them rulers of thousands, and of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens.	21 Mais choisis-toi parmi tout le peuple des hommes capables, craignant Dieu, sûrs, incorruptibles, etétablis-les sur eux comme chefs de milliers, chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquantaines et chefs de dizaines.
22 Who may judge the people at all times: and when any great matter soever shall fall out, let them refer it to thee, and let them judge the lesser matters only: that so it may be lighter for thee, the burden being shared out unto others.	22 Ils jugeront le peuple en tout temps. Toute affaire importante, ils te la déféreront et toute affairemineure, ils la jugeront eux-mêmes. Allège ainsi ta charge et qu'ils la portent avec toi.
23 If thou dost this, thou shalt fulfil the commandment of God, and shalt be able to bear his precepts: and all this people shall return to their places with peace.	23 Si tu fais cela et que Dieu te l'ordonne tu pourras tenir et tout ce peuple, de son côté, pourra rentreren paix chez lui."
24 And when Moses heard this, he did all things that he had suggested unto him.	24 Moïse suivit le conseil de son beau-père et fit tout ce qu'il lui avait dit.
25 And choosing able men out of all Israel, he appointed them rulers of the people, rulers over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.	25 Moïse choisit dans tout Israël des hommes capables, et il les mit chefs du peuple: chefs de milliers,chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquantaines et chefs de dizaines.
26 And they judged the people at all times: and whatsoever was of greater difficulty they referred to him, and they judged the easier cases only.	26 Et ils jugeaient le peuple en tout temps. Toute affaire importante, ils la déféraient à Moïse, et touteaffaire mineure, ils la jugeaient eux-mêmes.
27 And he let his kinsman depart: and he returned and went into his own country.	27 Puis Moïse laissa repartir son beau-père qui reprit le chemin de son pays.
