Nehemiah 6

1 And it came to pass, when Sanaballat, and Tobias, and Gossem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it, (though at that time I had not set up the doors in the gates,)	1 Samballat, Tobiyas, Guéchem l’Arabe, et les autres ennemis, apprirent que j’avais reconstruit le rempart et qu’il n’y avait plus une seule brèche; cependant, je n’avais pas encore posé les battants des portes.
2 Sanaballat and Gossem Rent to me, saying: Come, and let us make a league together in the villages, in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.	2 Alors Samballat et Guéchem m’envoyèrent ce message: - “Viens nous retrouver à Ha-Kéfirim, dans la vallée d’Ono.” En fait, ils avaient prévu de me faire du mal.
3 And I sent messengers to them, saying: I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down, lest it be neglected whilst I come, and go down to you.	3 Je leur ai envoyé des messagers avec cette réponse: - “Je suis occupé à un travail important et je ne peux venir. Je ne vais tout de même pas l’interrompre pour venir à votre rencontre.”
4 And they sent to me according to this word, four times: and I answered them after the same manner.	4 Ils me l’ont fait dire quatre fois, et je leur ai donné la même réponse.
5 And Sanaballat sent his servant to me the fifth time according to the former word, and he had a letter in his hand written in this manner:	5 Alors, à la cinquième fois, Samballat m’envoya son serviteur avec une lettre
6 It is reported amongst the Gentiles, and Gossem hath said it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel, and therefore thou buildest the wall, and hast a mind to set thyself king over them : for which end	6 où il disait: - “Le bruit court chez les étrangers, c’est Gachmou qui me l’a dit, que toi et les Juifs vous préparez une révolte; c’est pour cela que tu as reconstruit le rempart, et c’est toi qui veux devenir le roi.
7 Thou hast also set up prophets, to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying: There is a king in Judea. The king will hear of these things: therefore come now, that we may take counsel together.	7 Tu as même prévu des prophètes pour te soutenir et proclamer dans Jérusalem: ‘Juda a maintenant un roi.’ “Le roi va sûrement être informé de tout cela, viens donc et discutons ensemble.”
8 And I sent to them, saying: There is no such thing done as thou sayest: but thou feignest these things out of thy own heart.	8 Je lui ai retourné cette réponse: - “Il n’y a rien de vrai dans tout ce que tu dis, c’est toi qui as tout inventé.”
9 For all these men thought to frighten us, thinking that our hands would cease from the work, and that we would leave off. Wherefore I strengthened my hands the more:	9 Tous en effet, voulaient nous faire peur, ils se disaient: - “Ils vont se lasser du travail et la chose ne se fera pas.” Moi, au contraire, je m’accrochais davantage.
10 And I went into the house of Samaia the son of Delaia, the son of Metabeel privately. And he said: Let us consult together in the house of God in the midst of the temple: and let us shut the doors of the temple, for they will come to kill thee, and in the night they will come to slay thee.	10 Alors je me suis rendu à la maison de Chémayas fils de Délayas, fils de Méhétabéel, car il ne pouvait venir. Il me dit: - “Retrouvons-nous au Temple de Dieu, à l’intérieur du Sanctuaire, et fermons les portes du Sanctuaire: voici qu’ils arrivent pour te tuer et c’est de nuit qu’ils vont te tuer.”
11 And I said: Should such a man as I Bee? and who is there that being as I am, would go into the temple, to save his life? I will not go in.	11 Je lui répondis: -“Un homme comme moi irait se réfugier? Un homme comme moi ne peut pas entrer dans le Sanctuaire et demeurer en vie. Je n’y entrerai pas.”
12 And I understood that God had not sent him, but that he had spoken to me as if he had been prophesying, and Tobias, and Sanaballat had hired him.	12 J’avais reconnu que ce n’était pas Dieu qui l’avait envoyé. Sa prophétie à mon sujet, c’était simplement Tobiyas qui l’avait payé.
13 For he had taken money, that I being afraid should do this thing, and sin, and they might have some evil to upbraid me withal.	13 C’était pour que j’aie peur et que je commette un péché en faisant ce qu’il me disait. Il m’aurait couvert de honte et cela m’aurait fait très mauvaise réputation.
14 Remember me, O Lord, for Tobias and Sanaballat, according to their works of this kind: and Noadias the prophet, and the rest of the prophets that would have put me in fear.	14 Ô mon Dieu! Souviens-toi de Tobiyas et de ce qu’il a fait là. Souviens-toi aussi de Noadyas, la prophétesse, et des autres prophètes qui voulaient me faire peur.
15 But the wall was finished the five and twentieth day of the month of Elul, in two and fifty days.	15 On termina le rempart le 25 du mois d’Éloul; on l’avait fait en 52 jours.
16 And it came to pass when all our enemies heard of it, that all nations which were round about us, were afraid, and were cast down within themselves, for they perceived that this work was the work of God.	16 Lorsque tous nos ennemis apprirent cela, toutes les nations qui sont autour de nous furent remplies de peur, elles se sentirent humiliées à leurs propres yeux et elles reconnurent que c’était grâce à notre Dieu que ce travail s’était réalisé.
17 Moreover in those days many letters were sent by the principal men of the Jews to Tobias, and from Tobias there came letters to them.	17 C’est encore en ce temps-là que se multiplia la correspondance entre les nobles de Juda et Tobiyas.
18 For there were many in Judea sworn to him, because he was the son in law of Sechenias the son of Area, and Johanan his son had taken to wife the daughter of Mosollam the son of Barachias.	18 En effet, beaucoup de gens en Juda étaient liés par le serment qu’ils avaient fait à Tobiyas: il était le gendre de Chekanyas, fils d’Ara et son fils Yohanan avait épousé la fille de Méchoullam, fils de Bérékya. 19 Ils chantaient même devant moi ses bonnes actions et lui rapportaient tout ce que je disais, c’est pourquoi Tobiyas envoyait des lettres pour me faire peur.
19 And they praised him also before me, and they related my words to him: And Tobias sent letters to put me in fear.
