Lettera agli Ebrei 6

DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Perciò, lasciata la parola del principio di Cristo, tendiamo alla perfezione, non ponendo di nuovo il fondamento del rinunziamento alla opere morte, e della fede in Dio;	1 Let us leave behind us then al the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to its completion,without going over the fundamental doctrines again: the turning away from dead actions, faith in God,
2 e della dottrina de’ battesimi, e dell’imposizione delle mani, e della risurrezion de’ morti, e del giudicio eterno.	2 the teaching about baptisms and the laying -- on of hands, about the resurrection of the dead andeternal judgement.
3 E ciò faremo, se Iddio lo permette.	3 This, God willing, is what we propose to do.
4 Perciocchè egli è impossibile, che coloro che sono stati una volta illuminati, e che hanno gustato il dono celeste, e sono stati fatti partecipi dello Spirito Santo;	4 As for those people who were once brought into the light, and tasted the gift from heaven, and receiveda share of the Holy Spirit,
5 ed hanno gustata la buona parola di Dio, e le potenze del secolo a venire;	5 and tasted the goodness of God's message and the powers of the world to come
6 se cadono, sieno da capo rinnovati a ravvedimento; poichè di nuovo crocifiggono a sè stessi il Figliuol di Dio, e lo espongono ad infamia.	6 and yet in spite of this have fal en away -- it is impossible for them to be brought to the freshness ofrepentance a second time, since they are crucifying the Son of God again for themselves, and making a publicexhibition of him.
7 Perciocchè la terra, che beve la pioggia che viene spesse volte sopra essa, e produce erba comoda a coloro da’ quali altresì è coltivata, riceve benedizione da Dio.	7 A field that drinks up the rain that has fal en frequently on it, and yields the crops that are wanted by theowners who grew them, receives God's blessing;
8 Ma quella che porta spine e triboli, è riprovata, e vicina a maledizione; la cui fine è d’essere arsa	8 but one that grows brambles and thistles is worthless, and near to being cursed. It will end by beingburnt.
9 Ora, diletti, noi ci persuadiamo di voi cose migliori, e che attengono alla salute; benchè parliamo in questa maniera.	9 But you, my dear friends -- in spite of what we have just said, we are sure you are in a better state andon the way to salvation.
10 Perciocchè Iddio non è ingiusto, per dimenticar l’opera vostra, e la fatica della carità che avete mostrata inverso il suo nome, avendo ministrato, e ministrando ancora a’ santi.	10 God would not be so unjust as to forget al you have done, the love that you have for his name or theservices you have done, and are stil doing, for the holy people of God.
11 Ma desideriamo che ciascun di voi mostri infino al fine il medesimo zelo, alla piena certezza della speranza;	11 Our desire is that every one of you should go on showing the same enthusiasm til the ultimatefulfilment of your hope,
12 acciocchè non diveniate lenti; anzi siate imitatori di coloro che per fede e pazienza, eredano le promesse.	12 never growing careless, but taking as your model those who by their faith and perseverance are heirsof the promises.
13 Perciocchè, facendo Iddio le promesse ad Abrahamo, perchè non potea giurare per alcun maggiore, giurò per sè stesso;	13 When God made the promise to Abraham, he swore by his own self, since there was no one greaterhe could swear by:
14 dicendo: Certo, io ti benedirò, e ti moltiplicherò grandemente.	14 I will shower blessings on you and give you many descendants.
15 E così egli, avendo aspettato con pazienza, ottenne la promessa.	15 Because of that, Abraham persevered and received fulfilment of the promise.
16 Perciocchè gli uomini giurano bene per un maggiore, e pure il giuramento è per loro suprema conferma in ogni contesa.	16 Human beings, of course, swear an oath by something greater than themselves, and between them,confirmation by an oath puts an end to al dispute.
17 Secondo ciò, volendo Iddio vie maggiormente dimostrare agli eredi della promessa come il suo consiglio è immutabile, intervenne con giuramento.	17 In the same way, when God wanted to show the heirs of the promise even more clearly howunalterable his plan was, he conveyed it by an oath
18 Acciocchè, per due cose immutabili, nelle quali egli è impossibile che Iddio abbia mentito, abbiamo ferma consolazione, noi, che ci siamo rifugiati in lui, per ottener la speranza propostaci.	18 so that through two unalterable factors in which God could not be lying, we who have fled to him mighthave a vigorous encouragement to grasp the hope held out to us.
19 La quale noi abbiamo, a guisa d’ancora sicura e ferma dell’anima, e che entra fino al didentro della cortina;	19 This is the anchor our souls have, reaching right through inside the curtain
20 dov’è entrato per noi, come precursore, Gesù, fatto in eterno sommo sacerdote, secondo l’ordine di Melchisedec	20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever, of theorder of Melchizedek.
