DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ma un certo uomo, chiamato per nome Anania, con Saffira, sua moglie, vendè una possessione;	1 There was also a man cal ed Ananias. He and his wife, Sapphira, agreed to sel a property;
2 e frodò del prezzo, con saputa della sua moglie; e, portatane una parte, la pose a’ piedi degli apostoli.	2 but with his wife's connivance he kept back part of the price and brought the rest and presented it to theapostles.
3 Ma Pietro disse: Anania, perchè ha Satana riempito il cuor tuo, per mentire allo Spirito Santo, e frodar del prezzo della possessione?	3 Peter said, 'Ananias, how can Satan have so possessed you that you should lie to the Holy Spirit andkeep back part of the price of the land?
4 S’ella restava, non restava ella a te? ed essendo venduta, non era ella in tuo potere? perchè ti sei messo in cuore questa cosa? tu non hai mentito agli uomini, ma a Dio.	4 While you stil owned the land, wasn't it yours to keep, and after you had sold it wasn't the money yoursto do with as you liked? What put this scheme into your mind? You have been lying not to men, but to God.'
5 Ed Anania, udendo queste parole, cadde, e spirò. E gran paura venne a tutti coloro che udirono queste cose.	5 When he heard this Ananias fel down dead. And a great fear came upon everyone present.
6 E i giovani, levatisi, lo tolsero via; e, portatolo fuori, lo seppellirono.	6 The younger men got up, wrapped up the body, carried it out and buried it.
7 Or avvenne intorno a tre ore appresso, che la moglie d’esso, non sapendo ciò che era avvenuto, entrò.	7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had taken place.
8 E Pietro le fece motto, dicendo: Dimmi, avete voi cotanto venduta la possessione? Ed ella rispose: Sì, cotanto.	8 Peter chal enged her, 'Tel me, was this the price you sold the land for?' 'Yes,' she said, 'that was theprice.'
9 E Pietro le disse: Perchè vi siete convenuti insieme di tentar lo Spirito del Signore? ecco, i piedi di coloro che hanno seppellito il tuo marito sono all’uscio, ed essi ti porteranno via.	9 Peter then said, 'Why did you and your husband agree to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Listen! Atthe door are the footsteps of those who have buried your husband; they wil carry you out, too.'
10 Ed ella in quello stante cadde ai piedi d’esso e spirò. E i giovani, entrati, la trovarono morta; e, portatala via, la seppellirono presso al suo marito.	10 Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in they found she was dead, andthey carried her out and buried her by the side of her husband.
11 E gran paura ne venne alla chiesa, e a tutti coloro che udivano queste cose	11 And a great fear came upon the whole church and on al who heard it.
12 E molti segni e prodigi eran fatti fra il popolo per le mani degli apostoli; ed essi tutti di pari consentimento si ritrovavano nel portico di Salomone.	12 The apostles worked many signs and miracles among the people. One in heart, they al used to meetin the Portico of Solomon.
13 E niuno degli altri ardiva aggiungersi con loro; ma il popolo li magnificava.	13 No one else dared to join them, but the people were loud in their praise
14 E di più in più si aggiungevano persone che credevano al Signore, uomini e donne, in gran numero.	14 and the numbers of men and women who came to believe in the Lord increased steadily. Many signsand wonders were worked among the people at the hands of the apostles
15 Talchè portavan gl’infermi per le piazze, e li mettevano sopra letti, e letticelli; acciocchè, quando Pietro venisse, l’ombra sua almeno adombrasse alcun di loro.	15 so that the sick were even taken out into the streets and laid on beds and sleeping-mats in the hopethat at least the shadow of Peter might fal across some of them as he went past.
16 La moltitudine ancora delle città circonvicine accorreva in Gerusalemme, portando i malati, e coloro ch’erano tormentati dagli spiriti immondi; i quali tutti erano sanati	16 People even came crowding in from the towns round about Jerusalem, bringing with them their sickand those tormented by unclean spirits, and al of them were cured.
17 OR il sommo sacerdote si levò, insieme con tutti coloro ch’erano con lui, ch’era la setta de’ Sadducei, essendo ripieni d’invidia;	17 Then the high priest intervened with all his supporters from the party of the Sadducees. Fil ed withjealousy,
18 e misero le mani sopra gli apostoli, e li posero nella prigion pubblica.	18 they arrested the apostles and had them put in the public gaol.
19 Ma un angelo del Signore di notte aperse le porte della prigione; e, condottili fuori, disse loro:	19 But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and said as he led them out,
20 Andate, e presentatevi nel tempio, e ragionate al popolo tutte le parole di questa vita.	20 'Go and take up position in the Temple, and tel the people all about this new Life.'
21 Ed essi, avendo ciò udito, entrarono in su lo schiarir del dì nel tempio, ed insegnavano. Or il sommo sacerdote, e coloro che erano con lui, vennero e raunarono il concistoro, e tutti gli anziani de’ figliuoli d’Israele, e mandarono nella prigione, per far menar davanti a loro gli apostoli.	21 They did as they were told; they went into the Temple at dawn and began to preach. When the highpriest arrived, he and his supporters convened the Sanhedrin -- this was the ful Senate of Israel -- and sent tothe gaol for them to be brought.
22 Ma i sergenti, giunti alla prigione, non ve li trovarono; laonde ritornarono, e fecero il lor rapporto, dicendo:	22 But when the officials arrived at the prison they found they were not inside, so they went back and reported,
23 Noi abbiam ben trovata la prigione serrata con ogni diligenza, e le guardie in piè avanti le porte; ma, avendole aperte, non vi abbiamo trovato alcuno dentro.	23 'We found the gaol securely locked and the warders on duty at the gates, but when we unlocked thedoor we found no one inside.'
24 Ora, come il sommo sacerdote, e il capo del tempio, e i principali sacerdoti ebbero udite queste cose, erano in dubbio di loro, che cosa ciò potesse essere.	24 When the captain of the Temple and the chief priests heard this news they wondered what could behappening.
25 Ma un certo uomo sopraggiunse, il qual rapportò, e disse loro: Ecco, quegli uomini che voi metteste in prigione, son nel tempio, e stanno quivi, ammaestrando il popolo	25 Then a man arrived with fresh news. 'Look!' he said, 'the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. Theyare standing there preaching to the people.'
26 Allora il capo del tempio, co’ sergenti, andò là, e li menò, non però con violenza; perciocchè temevano il popolo, che non fossero lapidati.	26 The captain went with his men and fetched them -- though not by force, for they were afraid that thepeople might stone them.
27 E, avendoli menati, li presentarono al concistoro; e il sommo sacerdote li domandò, dicendo:	27 When they had brought them in to face the Sanhedrin, the high priest demanded an explanation.
28 Non vi abbiam noi del tutto vietato d’insegnare in cotesto nome? e pure ecco, voi avete ripiena Gerusalemme della vostra dottrina, e volete trarci addosso il sangue di cotesto uomo.	28 'We gave you a strong warning', he said, 'not to preach in this name, and what have you done? Youhave fil ed Jerusalem with your teaching, and seem determined to fix the guilt for this man's death on us.'
29 Ma Pietro, e gli altri apostoli, rispondendo, dissero: Conviene ubbidire anzi a Dio che agli uomini.	29 In reply Peter and the apostles said, 'Obedience to God comes before obedience to men;
30 L’Iddio de’ padri nostri ha suscitato Gesù, il qual voi uccideste, avendolo appiccato al legno.	30 it was the God of our ancestors who raised up Jesus, whom you executed by hanging on a tree.
31 Ma Iddio l’ha esaltato con la sua destra, e l’ha fatto Principe e Salvatore, per dar ravvedimento ad Israele, e remission de’ peccati.	31 By his own right hand God has now raised him up to be leader and Saviour, to give repentance andforgiveness of sins through him to Israel.
32 E noi gli siam testimoni di queste cose che diciamo; ed anche lo Spirito Santo, il quale Iddio ha dato a coloro che gli ubbidiscono.	32 We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.'
33 Ma essi, avendo udite queste cose, scoppiavano d’ira, e consultavano d’ucciderli.	33 This so infuriated them that they wanted to put them to death.
34 Ma un certo Fariseo, chiamato per nome Gamaliele, dottor della legge, onorato presso tutto il popolo, levatosi in piè nel concistoro, comandò che gli apostoli fosser un poco messi fuori.	34 One member of the Sanhedrin, however, a Pharisee called Gamaliel, who was a teacher of the Lawrespected by the whole people, stood up and asked to have the men taken outside for a time.
35 Poi disse a que’ del concistoro: Uomini Israeliti, prendete guardia intorno a questi uomini, che cosa voi farete.	35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin, 'Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people.
36 Perciocchè, avanti questo tempo sorse Teuda, dicendosi esser qualche gran cosa, presso al quale si accolsero intorno a quattrocento uomini; ed egli fu ucciso, e tutti coloro che gli aveano prestata fede furon dissipati, e ridotti a nulla.	36 Some time ago there arose Theudas. He claimed to be someone important, and col ected about fourhundred fol owers; but when he was kil ed, al his fol owers scattered and that was the end of them.
37 Dopo lui sorse Giuda il Galileo, a’ dì della rassegna, il quale sviò dietro a sè molto popolo; ed egli ancora perì, e tutti coloro che gli aveano prestata fede furon dispersi.	37 And then there was Judas the Galilean, at the time of the census, who attracted crowds of supporters;but he was kil ed too, and al his fol owers dispersed.
38 Ora dunque, io vi dico, non vi occupate più di questi uomini, e lasciateli; perciocchè, se questo consiglio, o quest’opera è dagli uomini, sarà dissipata;	38 What I suggest, therefore, is that you leave these men alone and let them go. If this enterprise, thismovement of theirs, is of human origin it wil break up of its own accord;
39 ma, se pure è da Dio, voi non la potete dissipare; e guardatevi che talora non siate ritrovati combattere eziandio con Dio.	39 but if it does in fact come from God you wil be unable to destroy them. Take care not to find yourselvesfighting against God.' His advice was accepted;
40 Ed essi gli acconsentirono. E, chiamati gli apostoli, li batterono, ed ingiunsero loro che non parlassero nel nome di Gesù; poi li lasciarono andare.	40 and they had the apostles called in, gave orders for them to be flogged, warned them not to speak inthe name of Jesus and released them.
41 Ed essi se ne andarono dalla presenza del concistoro, rallegrandosi d’essere stati reputati degni d’esser vituperati per lo nome di Gesù.	41 And so they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, glad to have had the honour of suffering humiliation forthe sake of the name.
42 Ed ogni giorno, nel tempio, e per le case, non restavano d’insegnare, e d’evangelizzar Gesù Cristo	42 Every day they went on ceaselessly teaching and proclaiming the good news of Christ Jesus, both inthe temple and in private houses.
