DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Poi noi ci rivolgemmo indietro, e andammo verso il deserto, traendo al mar rosso, come il Signore mi avea detto; e circuimmo il monte di Seir, per un lungo tempo.	1 'We then turned round and made for the desert, in the direction of the Sea of Suph, as Yahweh hadordered me. For many days we skirted Mount Seir.
2 Poi il Signore mi disse: Voi avete assai circuito questo monte;	2 Yahweh then said to me,
3 rivolgetevi verso il Settentrione.	3 "You have gone far enough round this mountain; now turn north.
4 E comanda al popolo, e digli: Voi siete ora per passar per li confini de’ figliuoli di Esaù, vostri fratelli, i quali dimorano in Seir; ed essi avranno paura di voi; ma però prendetevi gran guardia.	4 And give the people this order: You are about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the sons ofEsau who live in Seir. They are afraid of you, and you wil be wel protected.
5 Non movete lor guerra; perciocchè io non vi darò nulla del lor paese, non pure un piè di terra; perciocchè io ho dato il monte di Seir per eredità a Esaù.	5 Do not provoke them, for I shall give you none of their land, no, not so much as a foot's length of it. Ihave given the highlands of Seir to Esau as his domain.
6 Comperate da loro con danari la vittuaglia che mangerete; comperate eziandio da loro con danari l’acqua che berrete.	6 Pay them in money for what food you eat; and pay them in money for the water you drink.
7 Conciossiachè il Signore Iddio tuo ti abbia benedetto in tutta l’opera delle tue mani; egli ha avuta cura di te, mentre sei camminato per questo gran deserto; il Signore Iddio tuo è stato teco questi quarant’anni, e tu non hai avuto mancamento di nulla	7 Yahweh your God has blessed you in al you do; he has watched over your journeying through this vastdesert. Yahweh your God has been with you these forty years and you have never been in want."
8 Così noi passammo oltre, lasciati i figliuoli di Esaù, nostri fratelli, i quali abitano nel monte di Seir, fin dalla via della pianura, da Elat, e da Esion-gaber, e ci rivolgemmo, e passammo oltre, traendo verso il deserto di Moab.	8 'So we passed beyond those relatives of ours, the children of Esau who live in Seir, by the road throughthe Arabah, Elath and Ezion-Geber; then, changing direction, we took the road towards the Plains of Moab.
9 E il Signore mi disse: Non nimicare i Moabiti, e non mover loro guerra; perciocchè io non ti darò nulla del lor paese a possedere; conciossiachè io abbia dato Ar per eredità a’ figliuoli di Lot.	9 Yahweh then said to me, "Do not attack Moab, do not provoke him to fight, for I shal give you none ofhis land, since I have given Ar to the children of Lot as their domain."
10 Già abitavano quel paese gli Emei, gente grande, possente, e d’alta statura, come gli Anachiti.	10 (At one time the Emim lived there, a great and numerous people, tal as the Anakim;
11 Ed erano anch’essi riputati giganti, come gli Anachiti; e i Moabiti li chiamavano Emei.	11 and, like the Anakim, they were considered to be Rephaim, though the Moabites cal them Emim.
12 E in Seir già abitavano gli Horei; ma i figliuoli di Esaù li cacciarono, e li distrussero d’innanzi a loro, e abitarono in luogo loro; come ha fatto Israele nel paese della sua eredità, che il Signore gli ha dato.	12 The Horites, too, lived in Seir at one time; these, however, were dispossessed and exterminated bythe children of Esau who settled there in place of them, just as Israel has done in the country given to it byYahweh as a heritage.)
13 Ora levatevi, passate il torrente di Zered. E noi passammo il torrente di Zered.	13 "On your way, then! Cross the Wadi Zered!" 'And so we crossed the Wadi Zered.
14 Or il tempo, nel quale noi siamo camminati da Cades-barnea, finchè siamo passati il torrente di Zered, è stato trentotto anni; finchè sia stata consumata, d’infra il campo, tutta quella generazione, cioè gli uomini di guerra; come il Signore avea loro giurato.	14 From Kadesh-Barnea to the crossing of the Wadi Zered our wanderings had taken thirty-eight years;as a result of which, the entire generation of those of age to bear arms had been eliminated, as Yahweh hadsworn to them.
15 La mano del Signore è stata altresì contro a loro, per distruggerli d’infra il campo, finchè sieno stati consumati.	15 Yahweh's hand had been against them, to eliminate them completely from the camp.
16 E, dopo che tutti quegli uomini di guerra d’infra il popolo furono finiti di morire,	16 'When death had carried off from the people those of age to bear arms, to the last man,
17 il Signore mi parlò, dicendo:	17 Yahweh said this to me,
18 Oggi tu sei per passare i confini di Moab, cioè Ar;	18 "You are now crossing Ar, the country of Moab,
19 e tu ti appresserai dirincontro a’ figliuoli di Ammon; non usar contr’a loro alcuna ostilità, e non mover loro guerra; perciocchè io non ti darò nulla del lor paese a possedere; conciossiachè io l’abbia dato a’ figliuoli di Lot, per eredità.	19 and soon you wil encounter the children of Ammon. Do not attack them, do not provoke them, for Ishall give you none of the land belonging to the children of Ammon as your domain. I have given it to thechildren of Lot as theirs."
20 Quel paese fu anch’esso già riputato paese di giganti; già vi abitavano i giganti; e gli Ammoniti li chiamavano Zamzummei;	20 (This used also to be considered as Rephaim territory; at one time the Rephaim lived there, thoughthe Ammonites call them Zamzummim,
21 gente grande, e possente, e d’alta statura, come gli Anachiti; e il Signore li distrusse d’innanzi agli Ammoniti, onde essi li cacciarono, e abitarono nel luogo loro;	21 a great and numerous people, and tal like the Anakim. Yahweh exterminated them for the Ammoniteswho dispossessed them and settled there in place of them,
22 come egli avea fatto a’ figliuoli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, d’innanzi ai quali distrusse gli Horei; onde essi li cacciarono, e sono abitati nel luogo loro sino a questo giorno.	22 just as he had done for the children of Esau who live in Seir, so that they dispossessed the Horitesand settled there instead of them and are stil there now.
23 I Caftorei anch’essi, usciti di Caftor, distrussero gli Avvei, che dimoravano in Haserim, fino a Gaza, e abitarono nel luogo loro	23 It was the same with the Avvites who occupied encampments as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, comingfrom Caphtor, exterminated them and settled there instead.)
24 Levatevi, dipartitevi, e passate il torrente di Arnon; vedi, io ti do nelle mani Sihon, re di Hesbon, Amorreo, e il suo paese; comincia a prender possessione, e movigli guerra.	24 "On your way! Break camp and cross the Wadi Arnon. See, I am putting Sihon the Amorite, king ofHeshbon, at your mercy, and his country too. Set about the conquest; engage him in battle.
25 Oggi comincerò a mettere spavento e paura di te sopra i popoli, sotto tutto il cielo, talchè udendo il grido di te, tremeranno, e saranno in angoscia per tema di te.	25 Today and henceforth, I shal fill the peoples under al heaven with fear and terror of you; whoeverhears word of your approach wil tremble and writhe in anguish because of you."
26 Allora io mandai ambasciatori dal deserto di Chedemot, a Sihon, re di Hesbon, per portargli parole di pace, dicendo:	26 'So, from the desert of Kedemoth I sent envoys to Sihon king of Heshbon with this peaceful message,
27 Lascia che io passi per lo tuo paese; io camminerò per la strada maestra, senza rivolgermi nè a destra nè a sinistra.	27 "I intend to cross your country. I shal go my way, straying neither to right nor to left.
28 Tu mi venderai la vittuaglia ch’io mangerò a prezzo, e a prezzo altresì mi darai l’acqua ch’io berrò; concedimi solo di passare col mio seguito;	28 I shal eat and pay for the food you choose to sell me, and I shall drink and pay for the water you letme have. I only want to march through,
29 come mi han fatto i figliuoli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir; e i Moabiti, che abitano in Ar; finchè io sia passato il Giordano, per entrar nel paese che il Signore Iddio nostro ci dà.	29 just as the children of Esau who live in Seir permitted, as wel as the Moabites who live in Ar, until Icross the Jordan into the country that Yahweh our God is giving us."
30 Ma Sihon, re di Hesbon, non volle lasciarci passar per lo suo paese; perciocchè il Signore Iddio tuo gli avea indurato lo spirito, e ostinato il cuore, per dartelo nelle mani, come oggi appare.	30 'But Sihon king of Heshbon would not give us leave to pass through his territory; Yahweh our God hadmade his spirit obstinate and his heart stubborn, to put him at your mercy, as he stil is.
31 E il Signore mi disse: Vedi, io ho cominciato a darti in tuo potere Sihon, e il suo paese; comincia a prender possessione, conquistando il suo paese.	31 Yahweh said to me, "You see, I am starting to give you Sihon and his country. Begin the conquest byseizing his country."
32 Sihon adunque uscì, con tutta la sua gente, in battaglia contro a noi, in Iaas.	32 Sihon marched out against us, he and all his people, to give battle at Jahaz.
33 E il Signore Iddio nostro lo mise in nostro potere, e noi percotemmo lui, e i suoi figliuoli, e tutta la sua gente.	33 And Yahweh our God handed him over to us: we defeated him and his sons and al his people.
34 E in quel tempo noi prendemmo tutte le sue città, e distruggemmo alla maniera dell’interdetto, in tutte le città, gli uomini, le donne, e i piccoli fanciulli; noi non vi lasciammo alcuno in vita.	34 We captured al his towns and laid al these towns under the curse of destruction: men, women andchildren, we left no survivors
35 Sol predammo per noi il bestiame, e le spoglie delle città che avevamo prese.	35 except the livestock which we took as our booty, and the spoils of the captured towns.
36 Da Aroer, che è in su la riva del torrente di Arnon, e la città che è nel torrente, fino a Galaad, e’ non vi fu città alcuna così forte, che noi non l’occupassimo; il Signore Iddio nostro le mise tutte in nostro potere.	36 From Aroer on the edge of the Arnon valley and from the town down in the val ey, as far as Gilead, notone town was beyond our reach; Yahweh our God delivered them al to us.
37 Sol tu non ti appressasti al paese de’ figliuoli di Ammon; cioè a parte alcuna delle contrade che son lungo il torrente di Iabboc, nè alle città del monte, nè ad alcuno di quei luoghi che il Signore Iddio nostro avea vietati	37 You did not, however, go near the country of the Ammonites, or the region of the River Jabbok, or thetowns in the highlands, or anywhere forbidden us by Yahweh our God.'
