1 OR in que’ giorni venne Giovanni Battista, predicando nel deserto della Giudea, e dicendo:	1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea.
2 Ravvedetevi, perciocchè il regno de’ cieli è vicino.	2 And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 Perciocchè questo Giovanni è quello del qual fu parlato dal profeta Isaia, dicendo: Vi è una voce d’uno che grida nel deserto: Acconciate la via del Signore, addirizzate i suoi sentieri.	3 For this is he that was spoken of by Isaias the prophet, saying: A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.
4 Or esso Giovanni avea il suo vestimento di pel di cammello, ed una cintura di cuoio intorno a’ lombi, e il suo cibo erano locuste e miele salvatico.	4 And the same John had his garment of camels' hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5 Allora Gerusalemme, e tutta la Giudea, e tutta la contrada d’intorno al Giordano, uscirono a lui.	5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan:
6 Ed erano battezzati da lui nel Giordano, confessando i lor peccati	6 And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 Or egli, veggendo molti de’ Farisei e de’ Sadducei venire al suo battesimo, disse loro: Progenie di vipere, chi vi ha mostrato di fuggir dall’ira a venire?	7 And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them: Ye brood of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Fate adunque frutti degni dal ravvedimento.	8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance.
9 E non pensate di dir fra voi stessi: Noi abbiamo Abrahamo per padre; perciocchè io vi dico, che Iddio può, eziandio da queste pietre, far sorgere dei figliuoli ad Abrahamo.	9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father. For I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
10 Or già è ancora posta la scure alla radice degli alberi; ogni albero adunque che non fa buon frutto, sarà di presente tagliato, e gettato nel fuoco.	10 For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit, shall be cut down, and cast into the fire.
11 Ben vi battezzo io con acqua, a ravvedimento; ma colui che viene dietro a me è più forte di me, le cui suole io non son degno di portare; egli vi battezzerà con lo Spirito Santo e col fuoco.	11 I indeed baptize you in the water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire.
12 Egli ha la sua ventola in mano, e monderà interamente l’aia sua, e raccoglierà il suo grano nel granaio; ma arderà la paglia col fuoco inestinguibile	12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.
13 ALLORA venne Gesù di Galilea al Giordano a Giovanni, per esser da lui battezzato.	13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be baptized by him.
14 Ma Giovanni lo divietava forte, dicendo: Io ho bisogno di esser battezzato da te, e tu vieni a me!	14 But John stayed him, saying: I ought to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me?
15 E Gesù, rispondendo, gli disse: Lascia al presente; perciocchè così ci conviene adempiere ogni giustizia. Allora egli lo lasciò fare.	15 And Jesus answering, said to him: Suffer it to be so now. For so it becometh us to fulfill all justice. Then he suffered him.
16 E Gesù, tosto che fu battezzato, salì fuor dell’acqua; ed ecco, i cieli gli si apersero, ed egli vide lo Spirito di Dio scendere in somiglianza di colomba, e venire sopra di esso.	16 And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him.
17 Ed ecco una voce dal cielo, che disse: Questo è il mio diletto Figliuolo, nel quale io prendo il mio compiacimento	17 And behold a voice from heaven, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
