Josué 7

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Pero los israelitas cometieron una infidelidad con las cosas que debían ser consagradas al exterminio. En efecto, Acán –hijo de Carmí, hijo de Zabdí, hijo de Zéraj, de la tribu de Judá– se reservó algunas de esas cosas, y la ira del Señor se encendió contra los israelitas.	1 But the Israelites were unfaithful to the curse of destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son ofZerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something that fell under the curse of destruction, and the anger of Yahwehwas aroused against the Israelites.
2 Desde Jericó, Josué envió unos hombres a Ai, que está cerca de Bet Aven, al este de Betel, con esta consigna: «Suban a explorar la región». Los hombres subieron hasta Ai, la exploraron,	2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-Aven), to the east of Bethel, having said tothem, 'Go up and reconnoitre the country.' They went up and reconnoitred Ai.
3 y cuando estuvieron de regreso, dijeron a Josué: «no es necesario que se movilice toda la gente. Dos o tres mil hombres bastan para derrotar a Ai. No fatigues a todos haciéndolos ir hasta allá, porque ellos son unos pocos».	3 Coming back to Joshua, they said, 'There is no need for the whole people to go up; let some two orthree thousand go and attack Ai. Spare the whole people such an effort; there are only a few of them!'
4 Entonces subieron contra Ai unos tres mil hombres del pueblo, pero tuvieron que huir ante los hombres de Ai,	4 Of the people, some three thousand marched up, but these broke before the people of Ai,
5 que mataron a unos treinta y seis israelitas, los persiguieron desde la puerta de la ciudad hasta Sebarím y los derrotaron en la bajada. Ante esto, el pueblo quedó deprimido y sintió desfallecer.	5 who killed some thirty-six of them and pursued them from the town gate as far as Shebarim, and on theslope cut them to pieces. The hearts of the people melted away and turned to water.
6 Josué desgarró sus vestiduras y se postró hasta la tarde delante del Arca del Señor, con el rostro en tierra. Los ancianos de Israel hicieron lo mismo, y todos esparcieron polvo sobre sus cabezas.	6 Joshua then tore his clothes and prostrated himself before the ark of Yahweh til nightfal ; the elders ofIsrael did the same, and all poured dust on their heads.
7 Mientras tanto, Josué decía: «¡Señor! ¿Para qué hiciste pasar el Jordán a este pueblo? ¿Sólo para ponernos en manos de los amorreos y hacernos desaparecer? ¡Ojalá nos hubiéramos decidido a quedarnos al otro lado del Jordán!	7 And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord Yahweh, why did you bother to bring this nation across the Jordan, if it wasonly to put us at the mercy of the Amorites and destroy us? If only we could have settled down on the other sideof the Jordan!
8 ¡Señor! ¿Qué más puedo decir, ahora que Israel ha tenido que volver las espaldas a sus enemigos?	8 Forgive me, Lord, but what can I say, now that Israel has turned tail on the enemy?
9 Apenas se enteren los cananeos y todos los habitantes del país, estrecharán un círculo contra nosotros y borrarán nuestro nombre de la tierra. Y entonces, ¿Qué harás tú por tu Nombre glorioso?».	9 The Canaanites, al the inhabitants of the land, wil hear of it; they wil unite against us to wipe our namefrom the earth. And what wil you do about your great Name then?'
10 El Señor respondió a Josué: «¡Levántate! ¿Por qué estás ahí postrado sobre tu rostro?	10 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Stand up! Why are you lying prostrate like this?
11 Israel ha pecado: ellos han transgredido mi alianza, la que yo les impuse. Se han quedado con algo que debía ser consagrado al exterminio: se han atrevido a robarlo, a esconderlo y a reservarlo para su uso personal.	11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant which I imposed on them. They have gone so far asto take what was under the curse of destruction, they have even stolen it; they have actual y hidden it; they have put it in their baggage.
12 Por eso los israelitas no podrán hacer frente a sus enemigos, sino que tendrán que volver las espaldas ante sus adversarios, por haberse convertido ellos mismos en algo que debe ser consagrado al exterminio. Yo no estaré más con ustedes si no eliminan lo que debió ser consagrado al exterminio.	12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand up to their foes, why they have turned tail on their enemies:because they have come under the curse of destruction themselves. Unless you get rid of the object among youwhich has been put under the curse of destruction, I shal be with you no longer.'
13 Ahora levántate y purifica al pueblo. Tú dirás: «Purifíquense para mañana, porque así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel: En medio de ti, Israel, hay algo que debió ser consagrado al exterminio, y tú no podrás hacer frente a tus enemigos hasta que lo hayas extirpado».	13 'Get up, sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, since Yahweh, the God ofIsrael, declares: The curse of destruction has now fal en on you, Israel; you wil not be able to stand up to yourenemies, until you have rid yourselves of that object which has been put under the curse of destruction.
14 Mañana por la mañana ustedes comparecerán por tribus; la tribu que el Señor señale por medio de la suerte comparecerá por clanes; el clan que el Señor señale comparecerá por familias; y la familia que el Señor señale, comparecerá hombre por hombre.	14 Tomorrow morning, therefore, you wil come forward tribe by tribe, and then the tribe which Yahwehselects by lot will come forward clan by clan, and the clan which Yahweh selects by lot will come forward familyby family, and the family which Yahweh selects by lot wil come forward man by man.
15 El que sea sorprendido en posesión de los objetos condenados al exterminio, será quemado con todos sus bienes porque ha quebrantado la alianza del Señor y ha cometido una infamia en Israel».	15 And the man indicated by lot as regards the object which has been put under the curse of destructionwil be delivered to the flames, he and al his possessions, for having violated the covenant with Yahweh and forhaving committed an infamy in Israel." '
16 A la mañana siguiente, bien temprano, Josué hizo que Israel se fuera acercando tribu por tribu, y la suerte cayó sobre Judá.	16 Joshua got up early; he made Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the lot indicated the tribe ofJudah.
17 Luego mandó que se acercaran los clanes de Judá, y la suerte cayó sobre el clan de Zéraj. En seguida ordenó que se acercaran las familias del clan de Zéraj, y la suerte cayó sobre Zabdí, hombre por hombre, la suerte cayó sobre	17 He summoned the clans of Judah, and the lot indicated the clan of Zerah. He summoned the clan ofZerah, family by family, and the lot indicated Zabdi.
18 Y Cuando hizo acercar a la familia de Zabdí, hombre por hombre, la suerte cayó sobre Acán, hijo de Carmí, hijo de Zabdí, hijo de Zéraj, de la tribu de Judá.	18 Joshua then summoned the family of Zabdi, man by man, and the lot indicated Achan son of Carmi,son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.
19 Josué dijo a Acán: «Hijo mío, da gloria al Señor, el Dios de Israel, y tribútale homenaje. Dime lo que has hecho, sin ocultarme nada».	19 Joshua then said to Achan, 'My son, give glory to Yahweh, God of Israel, and confess; tel me whatyou have done and hide nothing from me.'
20 Acán respondió a Josué: «Es verdad, he pecado contra el Señor, el Dios de Israel. Esto es lo que hice:	20 Achan replied to Joshua, 'Yes, I am the man who has sinned against Yahweh, God of Israel, and thisis what I have done.
21 Yo vi entre el botín un hermoso manto de Senaar, doscientos siclos de plata y un lingote de oro que pesa cincuenta siclos; me gustaron y los guardé. Ahora están escondidos en la tierra, en medio de mi carpa, y la plata está debajo.	21 In the loot, I saw a fine robe from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and an ingot of goldweighing fifty shekels, I set my heart on them and I took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, withthe silver underneath.'
22 Josué envío a dos emisarios, que fueron corriendo a la carpa, y encontraron el manto que estaba escondido en ella, y la plata debajo de él.	22 Joshua sent messengers; they ran to the tent, and the robe was indeed hidden in the tent, with thesilver underneath.
23 En seguida retiraron las cosas de la carpa, se las presentaron a Josué y a todos los israelitas, y las extendieron delante del Señor.	23 They took the things out of the tent and, bringing them to Joshua and all the Israelites, laid them outbefore Yahweh.
24 Entonces Josué tomó a Acán, hijo de Zéraj, con la plata, el manto y el lingote de oro, a sus hijos y sus hijas, sus vacas, sus ovejas y sus asnos, su carpa y todo lo que poseía, y los condujo hasta el valle de Acor, acompañado de todo Israel.	24 Joshua then took Achan son of Zerah and led him up to the Vale of Achor, with the silver and the robeand the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his goats, his tent and al hisbelongings. Al Israel went with him.
25 Allí le dijo Josué: «¿Por qué nos has traído la desgracia? Que el Señor te haga desgraciado en este día». Y todo Israel lo mató a pedradas; también apedrearon a los suyos y los quemaron.	25 Joshua said, 'Why have you brought misfortune on us? Today may Yahweh bring misfortune on you!'And all Israel stoned him to death (and they burned them and threw stones at them).
26 Encima de él pusieron un gran montón de piedras, que ha quedado hasta el presente. Así el Señor aplacó su indignación. Por eso aquel lugar se llama valle de Acor, hasta el día de hoy.	26 Over him, they raised a great mound of stones, which is still there today. Yahweh then relented fromhis fierce anger. That was why the place was cal ed the Vale of Achor, as it stil is today.
